Basic signs and symptoms

A sign is a signal that can be seen by someone else - a healthcare professional for example, such as fever, fast breathing. Some of these require specialized equipment to be noticed.
A symptom is a signal that's felt or noticed by the person who has it, but may not be easily seen by someone else. For example, aching and weakness.
Here are some of the general signs and symptoms of cancer. However, having any of these does not mean that you may have cancer - many other things cause these signs and symptoms, too. If you have any of these signs, and they last for a long period or get worse, see a doctor.
