Each individual requires a break from the sensory pollution we are bombarded with every day, such as visual advertisements, signs, and displays, and audio stimuli such as traffic, television, music, et cetera. Even things like air conditioning, and chemical smells effect us daily. This constant stream of sensory input all has to be examined, scrutinized, and either acted upon or discarded by our minds and nervous system, whether or not it happens consciously or unconsciously. What we require sometimes is a "time out" from our external lives. Time we can spend completely within our own being to care for it, nurture it, listen to it. Meditation helps us do this. Meditation is what we do to help ground ourselves and bring a sense of calmness and peacefulness to our lives. It reminds us of the joy of just simply being without having to engage in any sort of activity. It helps break down the walls of misperception and egotism that are so prevalent in the world. It helps in the reduction of stress, one of the main culprits of poor health and an agitated mind. It is what can liberate us from this world and bring us to new heights in spiritual enjoyment and daily contentment. Be mindful however, the meditative way is something more than just sitting in the lotus position while breathing deeply. It is a way of life that brings serenity of mind though simplicity of life and contentment in being.
