ACM Rules

Emended rules from 7October

(The following was posted to the mdc-watch discussion group on 3 Oct 2002.)

Hi All,
Kjell and Peter at Maribyrnong IDC asked me to pass this on to everyone.

After a three and a half hour meeting with the Manager, Helen and the other guards that do reception shifts, the visiting times and what is allowed in, has been consolidated by them.

The new visiting times as of Monday 7th October are :

10am-11.30am
1.30pm-5pm
7pm-9pm

If the centre is not crowded then visitors can stay without having to leave after an hour and a half (during the longer visiting sessions). However, if there are over 50 people in the visitors area, then visits will be limited to an hour and a half to allow more people through.

Only sealed packets of cigarettes and change for the drinks machines will be allowed through with vistors, nothing else such as papers and pens will be allowed. All goods and written material (newspapers, newsletter, internet news) must be left at the reception desk to be passed on to detainees. Bags of food or other items can only be passed on to a detainee that is being visited. If you bring things for other detainees you are not visiting, you will not be allowed to leave the items. All food must be presented in CLEAR plastic containers. Opaque ice cream containers etc. will not be permitted.

There will be revised lists of what can and can't be brought into the centre for detainees on Monday.

Cheers - Lyn

A comment on the above:

I have been told that from next Monday all that visitors will be allowed to take in to the Maribyrnong Detention Centre in their own hands are their locker key and coins for the vending machines, from which ACM makes a profit.

That means that if you are a smoker, you are presumably supposed to cadge cigarettes from the rich people in the Centre. (Well OF COURSE they're rich! They paid people smugglers, didn't they????)

It also means that if you want to get smokes to the detainees, you'll be expected to trust the guards to hand them over, even though you may be expected to leave the premises before the goods are handed out.

How much more petty and bloody-minded bureaucracy are we supposed to put up with in our supposedly free and democratic society? What is the purpose of the new invisible stamp on one's hand when one goes in?

Obviously we put up with whatever we have to in order to see our friends, but why are we letting ACM get away with this?
