About 40 detainees at Maribyrnong went on hunger strike in the later part of January in support of hunger strikers at Woomera. RAC and other groups held a support rally outside the centre on 27 January. At the end of proceeedings scores of red balloons were released from the adjoining waste ground.
As usual the detainees were locked in for the duration, pointing further the irony of the poster shown in the first picture below:
