Sarah's thread received: She also included a photocopy of a newspaper article from 1934 and a photo of our Grandfather and his ice boat: thread from the red coveralls that our Grampa Rose wore on his ice boat Article titled, "Ice Boating Proves Popular for Young and Old At Block Island" Grampa is mentioned as the young ice boater, he was "but 13 years of age. Collecting available material and salvaging some old Ford springs for skates he hied himself to the cellar. Hammering and sawing indicated a building job. The only part placed out on bid was the stitching of the sail. The contract was awarded his mother, and the material had been salvaged from the Grecian, which sank off the south coast in 1932. Diligent hours resulted in a completed ice boat. Taking it to the pond near the harbor station he hoisted the sail, hopped aboard, and "oh boy," did she sail!"
