July 01, 2002 Volume 9

Congratulations on a great swim meet last Monday night.  Times are dropping for many of our swimmers.  Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard these past three meets to make our home meets so great!!

Coach Sue had surgery on her ankle Wednesday, June 26.  The surgery was a success, but Coach Sue will not be here for the last two weeks of practices and most meets because she will need to recuperate.  She will be working with Jason from home to help set up swimmers for the meets.  TONIGHT PLEASE HAVE EACH CHILD MAKE A CARD FOR COACH SUE SO SHE KNOWS WE ARE THINKING OF HER.  CONSTRUCTION PAPER AND MARKERS WILL BE GIVEN TO EACH AGE GROUP PARENT SO THE SWIMMERS CAN MAKE A CARD WHILE WAITING TO SWIM.  PARENTS, YOU MAY WANT TO HELP YOUR CHILD GET A CARD MADE FOR COACH SUE TONIGHT!!

Due to Coach Sue being out, Coach Jason will move to the TBN pool for practices where he’ll be assisted by deck assistants Becky Fisher, Claire Kelley and Michelle Slanis.  Coach Randi and deck assistant Doug Neuendorf will be at the QVE pool for practices.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:  THE END OF THE YEAR PARTY is July 15 (Monday of All-Stars) at TBN Pool from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The cost is $5 per family.  Watch for the sign up sheets next week so we’ll know how much food to order.  Please plan to attend with your family.

NEEDED:  A 1st Vice President and Secretary for the swim team board next year.  Please contact Denise Frazier (281-438-8440) if you can help on the board next year.  Other people can help with these positions ----we  just need someone in charge so the duties can be organized.

The end of the swim season is fast approaching.  Tonight is our next to the last regular meet.  The week of July 8 will be a busy week and you need to start planning now on where your swimmers need to be that week.  REMINDER:  THE MEET ON JULY 8 WILL BE AWAY AT GLENSHIRE.

The other meets for the week are as follows:

Congratulations on our close win against Glenshire last Monday.  Let’s all help out at our last home meet tonight.  Remember the last two regular meets are away.  Change your schedule to show that the July 8 meet will be at Glenshire.

Clean up tonight is to be done by the families who last names begin with the letters O to Z.

Please contact Denise Frazier at 281-438- 8440 if you are interested in being on the board of the swim team next year.

WE SEND A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR STROKE JUDGES AND TIMERS.  WE APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR WORK SO OUR CHILDREN CAN SWIM.  Please contact Monica Olin (281-437-2981) if you can be a timer or stroke judge for these last three meets and also for prelims and finals.  We need many volunteers to keep these meets running smoothly.  Being a timer takes no special training.  Stroke judging requires attending a clinic.

Sportsmanship is an issue that we all need to be reminded of after watching last Monday’s meet.  We will always treat officials and coaches with the utmost respect.  If a swimmer gets DQed it is because he/she made an error with a stroke, turn, touch, etc.  Any disagreement on a DQ needs to be discussed with the coach and not the stroke judge.  Stroke judges are volunteers, and they call errors as they see them  --- sometimes they don’t see them ---- they are human.  Coach Sue said she saw the errors that were called DQs and agreed with the stroke judges. As we advance with the season, strokes will be watched more closely; the prelims and finals meets are coming up and strokes will be closely scrutinized, so we need to make sure we’re doing our strokes correctly.  Please see the back of this sheet for the “10 Commandments of Parents.”  It contains some good advice for keeping these swim meets in perspective.  These commandments were written for USS parents, but they apply to summer swim league parents as well.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:  THE END OF THE YEAR PARTY is July 15 (Monday after Allstars) at TBN Pool from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.   Watch for more information.

13-14 and OPEN SWIMMERS:  Your boyfriends and girlfriends are welcome to come and watch the meets, but you are role models for our young swimmers, and you need to keep your focus on the meet and not your boyfriend or girlfriend.  A swim meet is not the place for public displays of affection.

Unfortunately, it has been brought to our attention that we have parents who do not volunteer at each meet.  Those parents who do not volunteer to help in some capacity will be charged the $25 nonparticipation fee per child.  Three or four families have paid the fee, but many others have not.  Parents are expected to volunteer one a half a meet per child.  If parents do not volunteer then you will be charged $25 per child to cover nonparticipation for the summer.

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR PARENTS

1. Thou shalt not impose your ambitions on thy child.

Swimming is your child's sport--let them enjoy it. Progress happens at different rates for different children. Don't push them based on what you think they should be doing. One of the nicest things about swimming is that success is based on doing your personal best.

2. Thou shalt be supportive no matter what.

There is only one question to ask your child after a meet: "Did you have fun?" Once the fun disappears, do not force your child to participate.

3. Thou shalt not coach your child.

You have taken your child to professionals; do not undermine them by trying to coach your child on the side. Your job is to love, support, and hug your child no matter what. The coach is responsible for the technical part of the job. You should not offer advice on technique or race strategy. THIS IS NOT YOUR AREA. This will only serve to confuse your child and prevent the swimmer/coach bond from forming.

4. Thou shalt have only positive things to say at a swim meet.

Cheer and applaud the swimmers--never criticize your child or the coach. If you have concerns, talk to the coach at a different time--they have a job to do at a meet.

5. Thou shalt acknowledge thy child's fears.

The first time at a meet or swimming a particular event is scary enough--be understanding of this. Assure your child that the coach thinks they are ready for the challenge if they suggested it.

6. Thou shalt not criticize the officials.

If you do not have the desire to volunteer as an official, don't criticize those who are doing the best they can, and who are there so that your child can compete.

7. Honor thy child's coach.

The athlete-to-coach bond is special and contributes to your child's fun and success. Don't criticize the coach in the presence of the athlete. It will only hurt your child's swimming. If your child asks for advice before a race, tell them "Good luck, and listen to your coach."

8. Thou shalt not jump from team to team.

There is something to be said for consistency. The water isn't bluer in the other team's pool. Oftentimes swimmers who do switch never do better than they did before.

9. Thy child shalt have goals besides winning.

Giving 100% is more important than the blue ribbon. A lifetime best time can be had and still not be first place--the personal best is more important.

10. Thou shalt not expect thy child to become an Olympian.

There are more than 250,000 registered USS swimmers and 52 spots on the Olympic Team. Swimming is much more than the Olympics. Ask your coach why he/she does it. We are not Olympians but still got enough out of the sport to want to pass that on to others. Swimming teaches self-discipline and sportsmanship, builds self esteem, and provides friendships that are life long. These intangibles far outweigh any medal. Swimming builds good people and you should be happy that your child wants to participate.

Check for the STAR Poster at TBN pool to see how your swimmers are doing on improving their  times.  Thank you to Pam McGuffin for setting up the STAR poster so our swimmers will know how many events they improved their times in from week to week.

Please make sure your swimmers get to practice on time!!  Coach Sue wants the swimmers at practice 5 minutes early and ready to go --- goggles on, hair up.  Parents let Coach Sue know if you’re having trouble getting your child out of bed --- she’ll speak with them.  It is expected that the swimmers will come to practice everyday ---- staying up too late, going to Astroworld etc., are not acceptable excuses to miss practice.  We can’t improve as a team unless every swimmer gives 100 % to improving.

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE YANKERS AND ZODYS FOR SUCH A GREAT CONCESSION STAND.  We appreciate all of your hard work to provide such great food and drinks for us during the meets.  Also, THANK YOU TO THE KIMBALLS for providing all the ice for the concession stand during the home meets.  THE TEAM APPRECIATES YOU ALL SO MUCH.  Thanks to all of those great workers!!

Clean-Up tonight is to be handled by families with last names beginning with J through N.  Next week’s meet clean up crew will be families with the last names beginning with O-Z!!

Thank you to those people who have helped with the set up of the meets ---- Lon McGuffin, Patrick Valdes, Doug Neuendorf, Mark and Barbara Slanis, Denise Frazier, Sue Neuendorf, Monica Olin, Alfonso Vivero, Sam and Karlyn Maultsby, and Betty Howell.  These people have been at one or both set ups.  Thank you to those people who showed up last night to set up for this meet as well.   PLEASE COME OUT AT 7 p.m June 23 TO HELP US SET UP FOR THE LAST HOME MEET.  Also, thank you to Sam Maultsby for treating the area for ants!!!

Because we are having the meet at home this week be sure and change your schedule to show that the July 8 meet will now be an AWAY meet at Glenshire!

Don’t forget to check the website for the swim team.  Thank you to Nancy Kwan who updates the times weekly and provides the pictures!!

Congratulations on a great meet this past Monday against Sienna Plantation.    Coach Sue and Coach Jason were happy to see so many times drop! The swimmers were well behaved so everyone was able to have a fun evening.

Welcome and thank you to Devin Heasley who has been helping with coaching at the practices and the meets.  We appreciate his time and efforts so much!!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS WHO SERVE AS AGE GROUP PARENTS ---- We couldn’t do it without you!!!

Thank you also to all of those who stepped forward to help at the meet, even though some of you were not scheduled to work.  We appreciate everyone who works and those who fill in when the need arises.

FAMILIES WITH LAST NAMES BEGINNING WITH  “A THROUGH “H” ARE TO HELP WITH CLEAN UP AFTER TONIGHT’S MEET.  A-H FAMILIES PLEASE PITCH IN AND HELP SO WE CAN GET OUT OF HERE QUICKLY.

Thank you to everyone who picks up their own trash when the meets are over.

The coaches ask that your swimmers be on time for practices ---- plan to be there at 7:55 a.m. -- that way the swimmers can be in the water at 8:00 a.m.  With practices only being 45 minutes long we need every minute to work!

We need board members for next year’s swim team.  Now is the time to learn what the board does to keep the swim team going.  Please contact Denise Frazier (281- 438-8440) if you are interested in being a board member for the 2003 swim season.

REMEMBER:  If you know you will not be able to attend a meet, please mark it on the Vacation Schedule with the Age Group Parent tonight.  Call Coach Sue during the weekend or on Monday if your swimmer is ill, etc. and can’t come to the meet.
