McGRINGO's SCORPIONS
Found: In an apartment in Johannesburg (Thanks, Inge!) and in a photographic studio.
Date: November 2003
Length: Approx. 4cm
Terrain: "urban" scorpion, found commonly in houses, often in humid dark places, e.g. under kitchen sinks, in bathroom cupboards.
Description: A dull grey-brown scorpion, widely found in built up areas, even in Hillbrow (I once found one behind peeling wallpaper in a Yeoville bathroom!). Because of its size and shape it is often mistaken for Uroplectes. The subacular tubercle is very underdeveloped however. Like most Jo'burgers, its appearance is deceptive, by all accounts it packs a very painful punch! Sadly, this little guy was looking poorly when I collected him after work and by morning he was dead. A week later I picked up another specimen in a photographic studio! I released him into my garden at home. Pics will be posted soon...

HOMEPAGE
Found: Under rocks in the bushveld.
Date: December 2003
Length: Approx. 6cm
Description: One of the larger Uroplectes. A dark olive body with lighter green appendages, as suggested by the name. The legs are lightly banded with darker green As the picture below shows, the juveniles appear to have more strongly banded legs, but these become more uniform in colour as the scorpion matures.
Comments: These guys can move! The 2 adult females pictured here were among 6 adults I found, but the instant I picked up the rocks covering them, they were off like a shot, and most of them escaped into the veld or under bigger, immovable rocks.

Left: A powerful tail affirms that it can deliver a nasty sting, although not deadly to humans. Far left: A typical aggressive pose. Below left: Soft, grub-like First Instar scorplings on their mother's back (I pinioned her in a grass headlock long enough to take the pic before letting her go!) Below: Second Instar scorplings, having moulted, are miniature replicas of the adults, but their markings are more pronounced.
