This page is so ugly, and I use it so much, that I am determined to get some style, some design, and some better organization in it. My idea now is to simply use ATTRA's, for example, organizational scheme, and then just personalize it as needed/when I can concentrate on it again! Here goes....

"When Arianne King Comer discovered that indigo was grown and processed in the Lowcountry during the Colonial era, she was inspired to relocate from Detroit, Michigan to St. Helena Island, South Carolina in the early 1990s. ...
"Indigo cultivation in the Southern Colonies began around 1650 and soon took hold in Louisiana, Georgia, Virginia, Alabama and the Floridas. In South Carolina, indigo was a bonanza crop for nearly half a century beginning in the 1740s. ...
"Indigo combined well with rice, South Carolina's primary crop. On the eve of the Revolution, indigo exports from Charleston peaked at more than a million pounds and amounted to 35 percent of South Carolina's total exports.
"South Carolinians continued to make fortunes in indigo until the last decade of the 18th century, despite competition from Guatemala's higher-quality indigo, exhaustion of the soil, the increased price of slave, depressions in the 1790s due mainly to insect damage and blight, and the upheavals caused by the American Revolution.
"Thereafter, indigo gave way to King Cotton, sugar and tobacco. Small amounts of indigo continued to be produced commercially in South Carolina and Georgia until the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. A synthetic indigo dye was developed in Europe and the organic industry ceased in America. The influence of the indigo dye boom lives on in Lowcountry Gullah culture and plantation history, and is reinterpreted at Ibile Indigo House through the mission and programs of Enlightened Visions. "
