HOME DELIVERED MEALS

Home delivered meals is a program targeted to persons 60 or older who are physically and mentally unable to obtain food or prepare meals, who have no other responsible persons who are willing to perform this needed service, and who is unable to participate in the Congregate Nutrition Program because of physical or mental impairments.  The spouse of eligible older persons is also eligible for this service.  In special instances, a family caregiver is eligible to receive a meal.

Home delivered meals provides a nutritionally balanced meal, which provides 1/3 of the daily recommended dietary allowance.  The McDowell Senior Center currently has 14 routes which serve approximately 190 homebound seniors.  This program not only provides a meal, but a check of our client's well being through brief friendly visits by our hard working and dedicated volunteers.

We currently have a waiting list for this service of approximately 65 individuals and receive referral calls on a daily basis.  We are in desperate need of volunteers.  If you are interested in helping to keep this vital part of the community going, please contact Virginia Greene or Dawna Ledbetter at 828-652-8953 or Email Dawna at

IN-HOME AIDE

In-home aide services are intended to assist individuals and their families with attaining and maintaining self sufficiency.  Independence is important to our seniors and this program allows them to stay at home and independent for as long as possible.  The program is intended to assist, but not to replace, family members in carrying out their responsibilities for those individuals needing the service.

In-home aide is targeted to older adults and administered by the Department of HuMan Resources.  The McDowell Senior Center offers two levels of care provided by outside agencies:
Level I (Home Management) consist of basic homemaking tasts such as basic housekeeping or cooking.
Level II (Home Management/Personal Care) consist of basic housekeeping, cooking and help with personal grooming.  Currently we serve approximately 40 clients and have a waiting list of 25 and receive referral calls on a daily basis.  For more information on In-Home Aide Services, contact Dawna Ledbetter (In-Home Aide Services Coordinator) at 828-652-8953 or Email Dawna at
