As you probably know already, I am a soldier in the National Guard. I enlisted in the National Guard in August of 1997 and I have never regreted any minute of it since then. The National Guard has given me many opportunities to become a better person and student through discipline, higher self esteem, and it has helped me to become a more financially stable person during school.
I went to boot camp at Ft. Benning, GA for about four months. During boot camp, I was given the Audie Murphy Award for the most outsanding soldier in my platoon. After graduating from boot camp, I returned home and continued to go to college.
When we go to drill on the weekends, we do many things which train us in case we are activated to go to war, or even if we get called out for a state emergency. The only time I have been called out was to go to New Orleans to fight off Hurricane Georges in September of 1998. The only other time we go on active duty is while the entire company goes to annual training each year. Usually, we just go to Ft. Polk for two weeks, but last year we went to Ft. Hood, TX. This summer the entire Louisiana Brigade is going to the National Training Center in Ft. Irwin, CA. This NTC annual training will be a three week stay, and we are going to get some real good training while we will be there.
Last August I graduated on the commadant's list
at PLDC (Primary Leadership Developement Course). This is two week
long course at Camp Ball which a soldier must take before becoming a sergeant.
This course hepled me learn about characteristics which make a non commissioned
officer beneficial to both his soldiers and his unit. This May, after
I finish my college exams, I will be going back to Camp Ball for two weeks.
This time I will be attended Phase I of BNCOC (Basic Non Commissioned Officer
Course).
