Irish eyes are smilin' in Walsh household

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The cat has been out of the bag for a couple of days, but the news is too good to ignore: Molly and Michael have gotten some good college news.
For quite some time, the brother and sister have been pondering where they will stop next in their continuing educations; Molly is entering college next year, and Michael has been eying a medical school.
This week, they revealed that they got some good news. "Mike was accepted at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, and a couple of days later, Molly got the nod from Notre Dame," Judy said.
You'll remember that back in early February Molly had already been accepted by Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., and the University of Georgia. At that time she was waiting on word from Notre Dame and St. Mary's College. (Go, Belles!)
Visitors to the Web site overwhelmingly selected Notre Dame as the most deserving school, although that vote was based purely on the coolness of mascots. While that undoubtedly has a profound impact on Molly's decision, "a good-size scholarship offer," as Judy put it, also is a key consideration.
Michael, who himself will soon become an Notre Dame alum, was considering MCG, Mercer University and Indiana University, which features a young hotty on its Web page.
He will have his undergraduate degree bestowed upon him on May 21. Molly grauates from Columbus High on June 2.
Congratulations to the entire Walsh gang, who is undoubtedly bursting with pride. Be sure to

Molly and Mike both got good college news recently, including some from Notre Dame.

OLD NEWS

SILLY MUGGLES
NEW ORLEANS -- It's official. Loyola University faculty can no longer be accused of being haughty.
Liz, an esteemed jounalism professor at that institution of higher learning, led a faculty  book discussion recently on the children's book "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone."
The discussion, according to Liz, was "laid back" and covered such topic as criticisms from some corners that the book glorifies witchcraft. "But one preacher defended Harry," Liz said, "pointing out that the magic the children work is mechanical, and they do not call on evil spirits to help them."
Other conversation focused on the proper pronunciation of the name of the character "Hermione."
What's next? An in-depth analysis of Arthur the Aarkvaark? (Of course, I won't point out that at least three of Liz's children -- college-age and older -- have devoured every book in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series.)

QUOTABLE QUOTE:
"Want to read the Maroon piece I wrote that may get me fired?."
-- Liz, referring to the recent "Speak Out" column that she penned after the scheduled writer "flaked out."

YOU DIRTY RAT!
NEW ORLEANS -- Well, it didn't exactly kill her brother, although Betsy recently had a close encounter with a dirty -- and large -- rat.
During a recent family get-together, she told the story: She was nodding off after a hard day at work, when she heard a scratching sound coming from the kitchen of her uptown New Orleans apartment. When she went to investigate, she found a rat in her kitchen. According to her description, it was big enough to reach into her kitchen trash can by standing on its hind legs.
"It was huge!" she said, holding her hands two feet apart.
After much freaking out, she insisted her landlord set out a rat trap. There was one problem, though: it worked. Now she had to figure out how to dispose of the thing.
Luckily, a friend from work named Ed helped with the body removal.
She says, though, that she has since seen and heard evidence of another rodent. Her landlord has placed out much rat poison, some of which has been eaten by something.

Was it the rat? Who knows? "But the other day I smelled a really slight soy sauce smell. I wonder if that could be a dead rat?" she said.
I'll never look at Chinese food the same way again.
