Betsy, Bridget conquer March 27

NEW ORLEANS -- A couple of weeks ago, Betsy and Bridget were both sweating and wringing their hands over potentially big career/ academic opportunities. Today, both are celebrating.
It was on March 27 that Betsy was to inteview in Michigan for one of a few spots in a nurse-anesthetist program. On the same day, Bridget was waiting to hear from one or more of the eight places to which she applied for a practicum. (See "Busy Day," from the March 10 update.)
Since then, both have received good news.
Bridget was offered a therapy practicum at all eight sites at which she applied. As such, she had the luxury of picking and choosing which was best for her (rather than the other way around). She opted for a position at Northeastern Illinois University's College Counseling Center.
"It was a pretty tense morning as I received the offer from Northeastern last, meaning I had a couple of other sites on hold, one of which made me make a decision while on the phone," she wrote in a recent e-mail. "After much nail-biting, I phoned Northeastern (which is against the rules of match day, but I had to know) and asked if I had the position. They called me back in a few minutes and told me they'd like me to join the team. Whew!"
So now she has to say goodbye to the Chicago VA's inpatient psych unit and switch over to working with college kids. "I'm expecting a different experience to say the least," she said.

certain President of the United States.
It seems Bill Clinton was in town and was scheduled to depart right around the 2 p.m. departure time for Mike and Lanie's flight. What they didn't know was the Secret Service doesn't let any planes take off or land within a 30-minute window of the president's departure.
They did, however, get a good look at Air Force One, which taxied past them on its way to the runway.
Both Mike and Elena are proud Democrats, so they had no disparaging remarks during the delay, although an excitible German couple in the seats in front of them didn't seem too happy.
When they finally did take off, they were treated to an incredibly turbulent flight all the way to Atlanta, where they switched planes before continuing to Norfolk.
Once there, Mike attended a newspaper design seminar, while Elena took in the sights. One of the highlights, given her college work with WWII historian Stephen Ambrose, was a visit to the grave and memorial of Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Bridget wasn't alone in feeling tension as a result of the Big Day. After an interview that she admits was less than stellar, Besty found herself coming home April 10 to a notice from the post office: A certified lettter had been sent to her, and if she wanted it, she was going to have to come to the post office and sign for it.
Needless to say, she was at the post office the next morning -- with Gus and Sherry tagging along and offering moral support -- just as it opened at 7:30 a.m. She signed for the letter, opened it and ... she's in!
So the good news is that she suceeded, but the bad news is that she has to move to Michigan. Sigh. One more state graced with a member of the family.
Perhaps no one is prouder -- or more misty-eyed -- than Liz, who offered e-mailed updates to make sure the news made it to the Web site. "That March 27 Day of Reckoning turned out to be a lucky day," she wrote.
