Beads, doubloons and trinkets, oh my!

NEW ORLEANS -- Most of the Louisiana crew is finally relaxing after a busy -- albeit fun -- Carnival season.
Bobby, Kelly and Steven drove in from Slidell (Lesley, oh, dedicated Lesley, was working) while Mike, Lanie and Sam drove in from Houma to join Sherry, Vince, Gus, Betsy and Shane for Mardi Gras on St. Charles Avenue.
The beads and trinkets were aplenty, and Vince's resourcefulness removed the pain of one traditional Mardi Gras headache: He brought his own port-o-potty. Loaded into the back of his pickup truck, it was parked about a block from the pardade route. As a result, everyone's bladder was able to spend the day in relative comfort.
Meanwhile, in the French Quarter, Liz was helping keep order in Molly's At The Market  while Katy was helping some friends from Missouri do whatever it is that college kids do on Mardi Gras in the French Quarter.
None was arrested for lewd conduct, but at one point the Mizzou crew did have to sprint from the men and women in blue after illegally hopping over a police barricade along a parade route. They got away, ahem, Scott free, and they got to see Whoopi Goldberg, the celebrity grand marshal of the Krewe of Orpheus. (Or was it Luke Perry, the grand marshal of Bacchus?)
At any rate, ashes have been applied to foreheads, Lenten sacrifices have been made and everyone is

BUSY DAY
NEW ORLEANS -- March 27 will be a big day.
First, Katy will arrive in New Orleans for spring break that morning. Also that morning, Betsy will be in Michigan being interviewed for one of the few slots available in the nurse-anesthetist graduate school program. The fact she was selected to be interviewed was encouraging.
Also that morning, Bridget will be called, she hopes, by one or more of the eight places at which she interviewed for a practicum.
"March 27 is 'Match Day,' meaning I will be getting called at 8 a.m. from whatever site(s) are interested in me, all demanding I tell them that minute if I accept so that if I don't they can call someone else before they accept an offer from another site demanding they accept or not," Bridget wrote via e-mail.

POTTY TIME

HOUMA, La. -- Chalk it up to irony.
On a day when most people's potty habits regress to peeing in the street, Sam's actually progresed.
After arriving back in Houma on Mardi Gras, Sam, for the first time, made pooh-pooh and pee-pee in the potty. (Everyone cheer!)
He did the deed with little prompting; while bathing, he looked at Lanie with an urgent expression and said, "Pooh-pooh!"
"Do you want to pooh-pooh in the potty?" Lanie asked.
   "Yeah!" he said.
The rest need not be described, but there was much celebrating, especially when he repeated the act one night later.
Finally, his potty chair has been used for something other than a footstool for gaining access to the sink.
