Lanie posts strong gains in week three
COVINGTON -- With a move wiley enough to be compared to those of Richard Hatch, Lanie put in a 50-point performance last week in the family "Survivor" league. By correctly picking "Mad Dog" Maralyn as the latest contestant to be kicked off the continent of Australia, she surged from the back of the pack to fourth place. Bobby, with 80 points, still has a firm grip on first place. Liz, however, is not far behind, with 70 points, despite never having seen the show. (Of course, she is surrounded by hip young college students all day, so that can't hurt.) Lesley is third, with 60 points, and Lanie is close behind with 55. The most relieved teams of the week are undoubtedly those run by Molly and Besty; both finally put points on the board. Episode four airs Thursday night, so log on and make your picks: tvgames. yahoo.com/survivor.
Mike, Bob's phone numbers make big switch COVINGTON -- Get out the Liquid Paper; it's time to change your phone books. Mike and Bob have new area codes, effective Feb. 12. With new num- bers apparently in short supply in the New Orleans-area 504 area code, state public service officials cleared the way last year for the creation of a new area code. (See Oct. 3 edition.) The result: Mike and Bob now belong to the 985 area code. The rest of their phone numbers will remain unchanged. Both area codes will work through Oct. 22, at which time officials will pull the plug on the old one. At the end of that grace period, dialers who use the wrong area code will get a recorded message informing them of their error. Although there are a few months before the cutoff date, officials recommend dialers use the new number now. "The quicker you get into the habit of dialing the new area code, the easier the transition will be when the new area code becomes mandatory," said Jay Blossman, public service commissioner from Covington.

Bobby's first marathon is a runaway success
NEW ORLEANS -- As if hogging the first-place spots in the family fantasy football and "Survivor" leagues wasn't enough, Bobby went and showed us all up Feb. 4, finishing in the front of the pack in the Nokia Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras marathon. Out of a field of more than 2,000 registered runners, he finished 58th overall. His time for the 26-mile race was 3:13:24, averaging 7:23 per mile. "I did OK," he said. "I surprised myself with a speedy 1st half-marathon (1:27:34), but I started getting tired after that, and by mile 20 I realized I was in trouble. I didn't 'hit the wall' that
marathoners often fear, but I certainly grazed it a bit. I had never run over 20 miles before, and had only run over 16 miles twice, so I knew I was on un-treaded ground." All in all, though, it was a positive experience: He was 3 minutes shy of qualifying for the Boston marathon. "The most motivating was seeing Mom at mile 2 ... and having Vince, Sherry, Gus, Mom, Kelly and Steven cheer me across the finish at the end. "So anyway, I rested Monday, and on Tuesday I began training for my next marathon." ................................ For official results, click here.
