environmental
technology:
a solar passive design
- ashish mayer

The existing residence was redesigned using passive solar energy with maximimum efficiency and comfort for the users, both for the winters and summers. Different alternatives were evolved using mass, trombe walls, water walls and/or shading devices. Building performance measures, code check requirements, thermal storage systems and passive heating and cooling concepts were examined thoroughly to come up with innovative cost effective design solution.

The sun shades and the glasshouse were used as the design elements to give a character to building facade where as change in building material and the R-value helped to achieve the desired insulation rating for external walls.

The orientation of the building was changed to accomodate maximum output of solar energy during winters and shades helped preventing summer heat from entering inside the building.
