Mayesbrook Lake Sailing Club is based in Barking, East London. Despite a lack of funding, inadequate facilities and a lake that is out of operation during most of the Summer months, the sailing team has still had its fair share of success. The lake which is very small and shallow (about 1 metre deep), is contaminated with blue green algae during most of the Summer months. This means that the club regularly has to temporarily re-locate during the Summer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fairlop Waters, the Royal Victoria Docks and Southmere Sailing Club for providing their facilities to us. The racing squad consists of few members, but still participate in regional and national regattas during the year, enjoying some success. The coaching staff are very committed to their job, and are always willing to help in any way, as well as their instructing duties. Indeed, they still have to do a lot of paperwork! Several times the club has been threatened with closure, but each time the parents, staff and sailors alike have all successfully protested. HOW TO GET TO THE LAKE: Car parking is available in Mayesbrook Park car park - opposite the Roundhouse Public House (on the roundabout linking Lodge Avenue with Porters Avenue - Barking). Once in the Park, just follow the path down and you will reach the club. The centre is easily reached by public transport. Upney station on the District Line is only a few minutes walk away - turn left out of the station, walk down Upney Lane and go down the road, The Drive and you are in the park. The 62 bus also stops down Upney Lane, while the 368 stops by the before mentioned car park. |
