Dzibichaltún. Only 22 km north of Mérida is the fascinating and beautiful archaeological of Dzibichaltún, which means "Place with writing on the stones" in Maya. Named a national park, the site covers 16 km. one of the oldest settlements in the Maya world, its economy was developed araound the salt trade, and it once had as many as 40,000 inhabitants. The famous of its structures is the Temple of Seven Dolls, where every equinox the rising sun lights the temple windows creating an impressive sight. Others Areas of interest include the open chapel built by spanish to evengelize the Maya, the Xlacah cenote, and the high quality Museum of the Maya People. |
