A bright spot
I spent an utterly dismal week at the Gemeentelijk Grondbedrijf in Amsterdam pretending to be some sort of system administrator and actually bored out of my mind. I don't know why or how I got assigned to the job, but someone sure wasn't thinking. A large portion of my time was spent trying my best to answer phones and take down messages - it's not easy trying to get foreign names right! And the rest of the time I was lugging around monitors and pc's, crawling around under tables and following cables to see where they lead, and banging my head on the desks all too many times as I came up a bit short.
Traffic was really horrible too. 16 km outside of Amsterdam, and it takes me 45 minutes to travel it! That's just crazy. But if you think I'm going to give up my nice warm car and stand outside on the platforms for trains, you're crazy. I've more than had my fill of the icy cold wind cutting right through me as I stood on a platform waiting for a train that was almost always late.
But driving back on Friday night I saw a shooting star briefly and brilliantly light up an otherwise dark night. Trailing a tail of green, it was lovely; perhaps especially so because of its brevity.
I don't know about anything else, but I am definitely ready for the holidays. A nice long break from work is just what I need! I do wish that I was off to somewhere warm and exotic for my 2 week break, but I guess Leeuwarden will just have to do. And come to think of it, I'm sure Marnix and I will find some way to keep me warm enough. *grin*
