Becker, Ernest. The Denial of Death. NY: Free Press, 1975. (reprint: May 8, 1997

From Amazon.com: “Winner of the Pulitzer prize in 1974 and the culmination of a life's work, The Denial of Death is Ernest Becker's brilliant and impassioned answer to the "why" of human existence. In bold contrast to the predominant Freudian school of thought, Becker tackles the problem of the vital lie -- man's refusal to acknowledge his own mortality. In doing so, he sheds new light on the nature of humanity and issues a call to life and its living that still resonates more than twenty years after its writing.”

From Maury: This book is astonishing in its articulation of the best of time honored spiritual values within a contemporary perspective.

Blanchard, Kenneth H.; Hodges, Phil; Blanchard, Ken . Servant Leader. Pub. J. Countryman (March 13, 2003)  ISBN: 0849996597  Ken Blanchard is one of the top management consultants, mjs.   Editorial Reviews: Best-selling author of The One-Minute Manager, Ken Blanchard, along with Phil Hodges, reveals the meaning of servant leadership modeled after Jesus Christ. Based on Blanchard’s and Hodges’ Faith Walk seminars, business leaders come to realize that teams are more powerful than the sum of the individuals and to recognize their people as appreciating assets.  Servant Leader summarizes the Four Dimensions of Leadership: the head (leadership assumptions and methods) the hands (application and leadership behavior) the heart (edging God out) the habits (solitude, prayer, study of scripture, unconditional love, etc.) The thousands who have attended his seminars witnessed the transforming power of this unconventional approach. Readers seeking to grow as leaders and business executives will find Servant Leader nothing short of life-changing.

NY: Paulist Press; 25th Annv. edition (November 1, 2002)  ISBN: 0809105543   Greenleaf is the grandfather of the praxis of Servant Leadership, mjs.   Editorial Reviews:   James A. Autry, author of Servant Leader and Love & Profit Servant Leadership is one of those rare books that will live far beyond the life of its creator.  Twenty-five years ago Robert Greenleaf published these prophetic essays on what he coined servant leadership, a practical philosophy that replaces traditional autocratic leadership with a holistic, ethical approach. This highly influential book has been embraced by cutting edge management everywhere. Yet in these days of Enron and what VISA CEO Dee Hock calls our "era of massive institutional failure," Greenleaf's seminal work must reach the mainstream now more than ever. Servant

May, Gerald G. The Dark Night of the Soul. San Francisco: HarperCollins, 2004. Over the years I have had an interest in Teresa of Avila because at one time Peter of Alcantara was her spiritual director and I have read that Francisco Osuna’s Third Spiritual Alphabet was kept at her bedside. Peter’s influence as a supporter of reform is well documented.  I found May’s interpretation lends itself to seeing the Franciscan influence on Teresa.  A helpful summary of Teresa’s writings is: Kieran Kavanaugh’s (introduction and editor) Teresa of Avila: The Way of Prayer: selected spiritual writings. Kavanaugh writes: “From Osuna’s book she learned about the prayer of recollection.  The book spoke to the profound contemplative call within her and helped her take the first needed steps along the way of a response,” (page 17).

Amazon.com lists 165 books on the Enneagram.  The popularizing of the Enneagram to stereotype people is a tragic travesty.

This book would be an excellent companion to a workshop that focuses on the training and practice of skills necessary for building community. Chapter 6 on Giftedness and Community lay a foundation for the emphasis on gifts in the later book on collaboration.

Notre Dame, IN: Ave Maria Press, As Sofield and Juliano note in the book, there are skills that are needed for the praxis of collaboration which cannot be learned from a book.  The book is comprehensive with chapters on obstacles, readiness, conflict and confrontation to name a few. Outstanding is the emphasis on gifts and the chapter on spirituality.
