Ministry
Objective:
My life long pursuit has been to
integrate psychology and theology into a contemporary spirituality with a focus
on Franciscan Spirituality. Most of my ministry over the years has been
serving lay and religious leaders. With the experience and training that
I have I would like to devote myself to developing lay ministry and to serving
the sacramental needs of people. I love preaching (I continue to work on
my homilies) and working with groups in a collaborative style with mutual
decision making. I have had seven different ministry careers and am now
beginning an eighth as Chaplain to Christian Brothers High School in Memphis,
Tennessee.

Professional Experience:
September

Deanery
Resource Coordinator (DRC) for 13 parishes.
For my ministry with the SE Deanery, click here: http://in.geocities.com/sedsatx
The DRC
is to facilitate ministry at the deanery level and to be a liaison between the
deanery and archdiocesan services. Began this new kind of ministry with a
professional interview of all the priests of the deanery with the focus on the
ministries they were willing to share at the deanery level. From these
interviews a list of ministry concerns were developed which was later
prioritized. The following are the ministry developments facilitated at
the deanery level by me:
Priest’s
Monthly Deanery Meeting: The dean has an hour and I have an
hour. In the beginning it was necessary to have additional planning
meetings. I facilitated the priests developing a Plan for Marriage for
the Deanery and a Plan for Liturgical Training. We have also spent about
four months going through an alignment process to establish our Core Values
(Mission Statement) and our priority goals. We spent three months
developing a profile of the parishes and the deanery out of the material from
Excellent Catholic Parishes. We recently began a future planning process
by spending a day together with this focus. I facilitated the priests
deciding to have a Day of Recollection in Lent and Advent and also an overnight
social/support gathering in June.
Monthly
Calendar and Events Newsletter: Each month I publish a six
week calendar and events newsletter. This is given to the priests at the
monthly meeting and then faxed and emailed to secretaries and the lay leaders
of the SED.
Unitas
Marriage Preparation Program: (Seven week program, five programs
per year.) Steve Gengenbacher and I took four months to train ten couples from
various parishes of the deanery in the Unitas which is based on similar
dynamics as the RCIA. As of April 2004 we have had 22 programs and served 167
engaged couples. Steve and I have also trained a team for the NW Deanery
and for one of the parishes on the West side of
SED
Pastoral Council (SED PC) monthly: Each parish is invited to have a
parish pastoral council person on the SED Pastoral Council. The SED’s
representative to the Archbishop’s Lay Council is also a member of the SED
PC. The council works collaboratively with the priests to create an
annual Leadership Gathering of the SED each year in September. The SED PC
plans, organizes and implements the event.
Please
check out the themes of the last five years has been: One year the SED PC
took training and promoted a Come Home For Christmas Evangelization Program at
the request of the priests.
Secretaries
Support and Continuing Education Meetings: Bimonthly. The Secretaries
choose the theme for each meeting. We have had a variety of speakers and
I conducted a day of recollection for them on Franciscan Praying.
Liturgical
Training: Most years we have either basic or advanced programs in being
Eucharistic Ministers and in Lector Training. Separate programs are
offered in Spanish and English.
SED
Youth Ministry: Monthly meeting of Youth Ministers. Facilitated the Youth
Ministers in three deanery level activities for the youth of the deanery:
1. Youth Mass and Social, 2. Youth Retreat, 3. Youth Leadership
Workshop. They also participate in World Youth Day.
In
November 2003 the priests requested that I focus on bringing together the
people who help the poor and the SVDP Societies of the SED. Meet
quarterly. I facilitated them adapting and enhancing the National SVDP
program of recruiting and training of new volunteers to help the
poor. The program they developed emphasized one to one recruiting,
training and then a buddy system to integrate the new volunteer into their
program.
SED
DRE Meetings, monthly: I attend the meetings of the DREs. Some of
them are also Youth Ministers. So far we have exchanged information with
one another. At the present there are
four DRCs in the archdiocese and we meet together once a month with Sr.
Janet Abbacci who is the archdiocesan liaison with the DRCs.
Recidivism:
Six Month Lecture Series (First Half of 2003)Coordinated and facilitated an
exploration into the causes of recidivism (people come to programs and
Sacraments and then fall back into inactivity in the Church.
Speakers: Steve Gengenbacher and John Romo, Family Life; Maury Smith,
