Beautiful country, fantastic people, priceless memories. Many people to thank now that I realize what they did for me. 11/24/08 Your pages, my first time viewing, seem to be the best I have found. Your pictures brought me back to a place I loved. Many changes took place by the time I got there, but the "hooches" remained with me. I will check in on your web site when I can, enjoying every mminute and every picture. 02/10/09

  • David Comerford: Jacksonville, NC. RAF Bentwaters, July 1979-July 1982. I loved being stationed at RAF Bentwaters. In fact it was my favorite assignment in my 20 year career. I worked in the Dining Hall and met some wonderful people, both military and civilian. Folks I will always remember with fondness. I worked the night of Dec 27, 1980 when the UFOs were seen and knew all the peaple involved. LT Col Halt always gave me a ride between bases if he saw me at the bus stop. He spent a lot of time at the chow hall also, he was a very nice guy. The chaplains were a special lot too. Jim King and the rest made life for this single airman far from home so much nicer. Oh the memories, I will never forget those 3 years. 12/05/00
  • Michael B Combs: Gualala, CA. RAF Bentwaters, Jan 1970-Feb 1975, 81st Combat Support Group. Arrived as a 2nd Lt (6 yrs enl-left 5 years later as a "permanent" Captain). Wing Budget Officer with late wife Marilynn and 3 sons. The 67th ARRS had arrived a few months before, housing was tight. Worked with UK Civ Arthur Sharman, Walberswick, and TSgt Phil Ashcraft. Burned a lot of overtime to put out the budget. Phil's replacement was the late TSgt (SMSgt)Robert K Clough, who also did a great job as manager of the Rod & Gun Club. Boss was Comptroller Lt Col Lenore Henson, soon promoted to Colonel, promotion party at my house, The Street Farm, Saxmundham. Later worked for Lt Col James Frise, great boss, and five good wing commanders. Col Charles Word pinned on star there, best commander I ever had. I was the Budget Officer for five years, best job I ever had, on by far the best base I ever served on. I had season tickets for Ipswich Town during their glory years. Played on the base soccer team. Had fish and chips each Friday lunch with Art Sharman and friends at the O Club, and great hamburgers at the Top Three Club take out. Memorable people, Iris Fletcher, UK civilian employee Civil Engineers, Herr Wilfred Robst, Nonappropriated Funds, and many others whose names will come back to me as soon as I post this. To say that this was a special place at a special time does not do justice to how much I loved my job, the bases, fellow Yanks, the towns and townspeople, British TV. I am so happy with the memories, and so sad I can't do it all over again. 03/25/06
  • Lawrence P Concannon, (MSgt Retired): Leiston, Suffolk, UK. RAF Bentwaters, Jun 1977-Jan 1964. 81st Supply Sq. RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, Aug 1988-Aug 1992, 81st Security Police Squadron, Flight Sergeant on RAF Woodbridge and Security Police/ABGD Instructor then back to Korea. Met some of the best people in my career and still stay in touch with some. CATM folks were great. Tom Long LE Instructor was great. Nick names were Tom and Jerry. • Paul Constable: Suffolk, UK. I am a brit living here in Suffolk, UK and recently went back to RAF Bentwaters with my work. I say went back because my father was stationed at RAF Wattisham as he was in the RAF and also living there was an American kid whos Dad was a pilot on a USAF/RAF exchange program. This kid and I became very good friends and back in 1979-80 his mum used to take us onto RAF Bentwaters, when she went to the BX, and left us to make use of the bowling alley etc. great times. The firm I was working at RAF Bentwaters had an American who left the USAF when the base closed and married and stayed in England. He worked at RAF Bentwaters as a serviceman and now as a civilian 14 years later building refridgerators! Sad to see the base so different from how I remember it. But while I was there one thing did amuse me. I was taking my lunch break sitting on the stands at the old baseball pitch and there would you believe it were old American candy wrappers, still under the stand. They must have been there at least 14 years since the USAF left in 1993. Those candy wrappers seem to be the only connection that little America was once here. Great website keep up the good work. 05/04/07
  • George Conway Long Beach, CA. RAF Bentwaters, Nov 1970-Oct 1981, B Flight LE. Has it been 30 years? Wow. Never had so much fun. Its weird; I never remember hearing anything about Rendlesham while I was stationed there. Who remembers playing baseball in Christchurch park with loaned gear from the base? Or camping at the Albion fairs, again with loaned gear from the base? Where are me mates today? I remember the SPs always partied harder. 05/23/08

  • Julie Cook : I'm very new to all this, I live in Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. Have just read a newspaper article concerning Linn Barringers pages. I am after any information about William Arnold Jacques RAF Bentwaters, 1264th AACS Squadron, under Major D T Francis, 1958-59. Shipped back home towards the end of summer 1959. He originally came from California, I'm told. He was at least 6ft tall and handsome. I would appreciate any help or guidance you can give me. If you can help. Thanks for your time, this has been a real experience! 5/21/99
  • Kenneth Cook: Eyke, Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK. RAF Bentwaters, May 1965-Jul 1968 & Jul 1972-Sep 1977, 81st Air Police/81st Security Police. Stumbled on the site. It is great. Sad to see our old base neglected as I live so close. 7/19/01 Anyone at RAF Bentwaters or RAF Woodbridge, 1954-55, knowing Patricia Moore who lived on Queens Ave Woodbridge, and worked at the canning factory on the thorofare, I would appreciate their getting in touch. A dear friend of our's, whose mother has just passed away, is desperately trying to locate Patricia. Also, did anyone know a USAF member around that time with the last name of Soar? Any info will be passed along to our friend. 5/25/02 Have heard from a lot of old friends via the 81st SPS site.I have some interesting pics on the SPS site of the former base if you want to check them out. • Jerry Cornwall: I was a cab driver for the J J Cars company, and following companies right up to the base's decommissioning in 1993. In 1994 I had to go into the Ipswich hospital for back surgery, while there I met and became friendly with an SP dormed on RAF Woodbridge called Walt Im. Sorry but that's the only name he gave me that I can remember? I recall he had seriously injured his ankle in a fall from his Harley on the back roads between Tunstall and Wanttisden. It would be nice to hear from him again. Maybe he remembers the jokes and laugh's that we had with the staff on our ward. Also the other serviceman who had a bad car smash at Bromswell. Remember the Brut aftershave joke that went slightly wrong? If you are out there get in touch through these pages. I will keep looking in on the missing persons page 2-3 times a month. I will look for Walt to Jerry, OK, and to all those that worked at RAF Bentwaters between 1985-1993. 12/30/00 I wonder if you could help me please I'm looking for a SP officer named Walter (???), (Walt for short) who was hospitalised in heath rd hospital, after a motorcycle accident on the back roads of RAF Bentwaters between the village's of Wanttisdon & Tunstall. We shared a lot of laugh's together for example (nurses who do the split's to ground level even in uniform! and the birthing of elephant's & hippo's). If Walt see's this he will know, and remember who I am. The last time we met was when I visited him at his barracks's at RAF Woodbridge. I worked for the on base cab firm of JJ cars. If I remember rightly he was riding a Harley Davidson at the time of his accident. Thank you for any help you can give. It would be nice to chat with him again, just to see how he is doing. 3/30/01

  • James L Cowper: Mililani Town, Hawaii. RAF Bentwaters, Aug 1951-Jul 1954, 81st Fighter Wing, Sep 1947, 91st Fighter Sq, Wheeler AFB, Hawaii, Jun 1948. Was going thru some of your e-mail and didn't see anyone I knew. I keep in touch with a few people from that era, John Astry, Chris Bouwhis, & Chuck Wrobel. Would like to hear from anyone from the 91st, 92nd or 78th from that period. I retired from the Air Force on 28 Feb 1966, as a MSGT. We had 6 children who needed a father at home, and as an airman in a fighter unit it wasn't possible to escape the long periods of TDY, especially when your in aircraft maintenance. My final position in the 91st FIS was in Technical Inspection. We Lived at 2 Yoeman Rd, Felixstowe. It was pretty tough on the wives in the unit since it was difficult to get a sufficient amount of Hot water to wash clothing, and bathe. We had a washing machine, (an old wringer type). With 2 small children in cloth diapers she had a tough time of it. Many evenings I had to finish the wash while she got supper ready so we could use the bath tub to bathe. We had only fireplaces to heat our quarters. An area around the fire place was reserved for drying diapers. (Space heaters are dangereous around small children). 9/24/03

We left RAF Bentwaters December 1987 for Hill AFB, UT and spent 2 years there before going to Raf Lakenheath. Got out and now live here in Alabama where I'm a cop for the city of Birmingham. Anyone who may have known me at Moody, GA, Korea, RAF Bentwaters, Hill, UT. OR RAF Lakenheath, please get in touch. Thanks for all these good memories. Both of us agree, nowhere beats good old England. It's a real shame the bases are closed. A great loss to everyone American and English. It's a close friendship that nowhere else can compare. All the best and Cheers! 2/24/00
  • Jack Cox: Fort Worth, TX. RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge. 1992-Sep 30, 1993. Former Law Enforcement troop and had the honor of being the LAST American on RAF Woodbridge. I called the Law Enforcement Desk on that sad night and told them I was terminating RAF Woodbridge for the last time. I then handed the keys to the Royal Marine Regiment, and with a tear in my eye, drove through the gate for the last time. Of course, about 10 days later the last 10 LE troops including myself closed down RAF Bentwaters and off to Provide COmfort II I went. 9/29/00

  • Mike Critchley: Aurora, CO . RAF Woodbridge, 1971-1972, EOD. I was at RAF Woodbridge after Bien Hoa and Hahn AB Germany. Worked with Joe Fincher in the EOD quonset hut. I also lived in the WWII huts that were where the gas station was put later. We had coal stoves and the latrine was in another hut at the end of the block. My family and I visited RAF Woodbridge/Bentwaters in 1998 on vacation and it was sad to see RAF Bentwaters all boarded up. We talked to another Yank who was guarding the flight line at RAF Woodbridge and he said the RAF was using the base for training but not flying. There was a rumor that RAF Bentwaters might have a new life as a commercial passenger and cargo airport (never happened...Jim)but I have not heard any more about it. It was also sad to see the magnificent forest that was around the base had been "harvested". 3/17/01

I am currently an instructor in Air Force Junior ROTC at Elkins High School in Missouri City, TX. My wife Yvette and I (she actually) had two of our three children at RAF Lakenheath hospital. We made many good friends have such great memories of those times, and would be interested in corresponding with anyone who was stationed there--especially 91, 92, and 78 TFS pilots/WSOs. Would be interested in hearing from other RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge types of the late 1969 to late 1973 timeframe. Great site. Really enjoyed surfing through the memories. 5/31/00

  • Dan Curtis: Asheville, NC. RAF Bentwaters, 1951-52. Doesn't seem like there's too many of us oldsters left from that time frame. Married an Ipswich girl 46 years ago. Visited Ipswich in 1997 and rode by Bentwaters. It looks very deserted. Hopefully the private sector will build it up into a vital community. I was one of approx 100 who re-opened RAF Bentwaters in April 1951. Was attached to the Motor Vehicle Sq. Guy's I remember were Bob Byers, Ohio, a fella by the name of Malcom, Arkansas, Richie, NY, Art DeVose, Iowa, our best man, unfortunately died several years back. In my quonset(?) hut there was a fella by (I believe) the name of Williams an AP. Transferred from RAF Bentwaters to Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire around Feb 1952. Would like to hear from anyone stationed at RAF Bentwaters or Upper Heyford at the same time. 1/25/99
