  • John R Bolam: Scunthorpe, England. Being of far too young and of the wrong nationality I never had the honor of serving at RAF Woodbridge. I used to visit on occasions, and would sit on the little pier there and watch the countless A10s fly. You would hear the hi-pitch wine of their engines, and then they would arise from behind the trees, always in twos. A little while latter, I was able to go to this dirt track that was a the end of the runway and watch the planes at first hand from behind a fence. The USAF MPs came around and asked us what we were doing, but when we told them that we were only here to see the planes they left-us-alone. (Quite the opposite you got if you tried to stop on the side road next to RAF Scampton when the place swarmed with Vulcans and their a-bombs). Then they came; sixteen A10s in groups of four, flying no higher than 100ft overhead. We stood at the end of the runway and as they flew over us we used to wave to them. One-or-two of them even shook their wings to us. On another occasion a Jolly-Green-Giant helicopter flew over us, and the side door was open, and the airman in there waved to us as we waved to them. Perhaps, all this is garbage to you all. But to anyone who had the privilege of serving at RAF Woodbridge/Bentwaters let me say that I alone truly think that each and every one of you, whether you were flight-crew of ground-crew are all part of what was. You were part of the group that protected us. Without your presence I and all of this might not exist. And even, if in this backward world no-body seems to think that, let me at least personally acknowledge your work. May all of you achieve in life eternal peace. Thank You, my friends. 1/17/00

  • Stephen Broshar:: Kansas. RAF Woodbridge, Jul 1976-Aug 1978, 81st SPS "D Flight". Reading these stories brings back a lot of memories, many of them melancholy. I remember I used to hate when the alert klaxon went off. We never knew how many hours we would be standing watch before we were relieved. If only I had been one of the guard dogs that only worked 8 hours no matter what. I ran into a guy from my hometown that was at RAF Woodbridge about 6 years after I left. He told me they had closed it. When I was there, the tab "B" shelters were being built. They were going to replace the F-4's with A-10's. I remember one night being on a SAT team and driving around when we got a radio call from the K-9 unit to meet him at one of the aircraft parking pads in the tapa. We arrived and asked where he was? He said "look up"! We looked up. It was cold out, so he opened the canopy on an F-4 and stuck his dog in the WSO seat and he clinbed in the pilot seat. After he closed the canopy he couldn't figure out how to open them from the inside. We about peed our utilitys we were laughing so hard. Just one of many stories that are coming back to me. 02/08/04

My tour with the 79thTFS/FMS was memorable, alerts, TDY to Wheelus AFB, Libya, fog call, the pub and darts, etc. But most of all I will never forget the increased readiness status at the time of President Kennedy's assasination. Terrifying for a young man from Mississippi. Anyway, I married SACW Dilys Powell from RAF Bawdsee (across the bay from Flexistowe) and our daughter, Dixie, was born at RAF Bentwaters. Returned to England in the late 1970's but it was never the same as that first tour at RAF Woodbridge. Now retired in Southern California and all are welcome! I did meet the girl who became my wife while there, although she was from Leeds, Yorkshire. A vivid memory was the time when I was on temporary duty from the intelligence unit to the post office for Christmas and this rather large tree fell over and cut the quonset in half. • Troy Burns: RAF Alconbury, May 1958-59. Turrett Gunner. We called it the BX, for base exchange, and what I mainly recall is that it had a snack bar (unless I'm completely off base) where my friends and I ate most of our meals. Because we always missed at least one meal when we flew, we convinced them to give all the single gunners separate rations. That mess hall was soooo bad, at RAF lconbury, that we seldom ever ate there after getting our ration money. We did have to eat at the mess hall when our crew was on alert. The entire crew would have to ride a bus to the mess hall and eat our meals there, then ride back to the lert area. On the other hand, the mess hall at RAF Hurlburt where we trained before going to RAF Alconbury was excellent. Bob Green adds: "Were any of you there when (I think it happened only one day) when they gave a real surprise at the mess hall; steak and beer! Yes, as a reward for the good job on the particular alert, if memory serves well. All member 'Scotty' the gal that worked in the mess hall? Troy is the first to recall 'Bloke' who was the Brit Civilian shuttle bus driver...in his chauffer cap. How about 'Kraut' the German who supposedly was a Nazi during the WW II?" 1/1/01
