Welcome to My World

There are these people I see every day,
They think I'm a bother, I only get in the way.
They teach me that they are the ones who know best,
If I don't agree it's best not to protest.
But I have feelings too and I want them to know,
I don't always want to do things just cause they say so.
There are things that I know and things I can do,
If only you'd ask I'd be glad to show you.
I heard you say I couldn't do anything well,
But I think there are things at which I excel.

"Come into my world." I wish I could welcome you in,
to briefly live my life, "Where to begin?".
You would see that some people can be very cruel,
Sometimes they don't follow a very basic rule.
They don't treat you like they would like you to treat them,
They are quick to give orders, point, laugh and condemn.

Think for a minute how strange it would be,
If only for a minute that you had to be me.
To have others tell you that you really don't belong,
To have to listen to all the things you did wrong,
To be called dumb and stupid and a pain in the rear,
To have people talk about you as if you weren't near.
To hear some one that you thought was your buddy,
Say things about you that make you feel cruddy.
Especially if you couldn't talk or know quite how to say,
I really, really don't like when you treat me this way.

But back in my world Im happy to see,
That there are people who like me, just for me.
They don't expect me to do marvelous things,
They know what I can do and don't attach strings.
When others speak badly of me some are quick to stand up and scream,
That we should always be building not destroying self esteem.
They help me to know that I am a valuable person too,
Even if there are things I haven't yet learned to do.
They like me when Im nice, and understand when Im not,
That's because we are friends and to me that means a lot.
