| As she stood by the window smelling the fresh spring air she didn't hear anyone walk into her room, because she was so wrapped up in the air. "Shawnie, Are you going into town today?" the voice behind her spoke. Shawnie jumped and turned around with a scared look on her face that turned into a smile. "Well are you?" it asked again. "Yes I am if you don't mind. I need to pick up some thing for myself. Is that all right with you?" she asked. "Yes, that is fine sis. I wanted to know so I could go to Drea's house." he said with a smile from ear to ear. "So you want me to drop you off and then come back later for you, right?" she said with a laugh. He started to walk out her door when Shawnie said, "I am just teasing you Skeet. I didn't mean anything bad. I didn't know you would get so upset." "Oh you didn't I was just wandering what to wear to her house." he said shyly. Shawnie bursted out laughing and grabbed his arm and followed him to his room. She shoved him down on his bed and walked over to his closet. She knew clothes and he knew that. He was just too proud to ask for help from his sister. He watched her going through his clothes and started laughing. She turned around and said, "What are you laughing at Pinky?" "Oh nothing. Blondie." he said She turned back to his clothes and finally picking out his outfit for him to wear to his date. She threw his clothes at him and left the room. She went back to her room to get dressed herself. She would normally take hours to get ready but she didn't worry about it this morning. She didn't think she need to because she wouldn't see anyone important like the guy she likes because he was at the lake with his parents on a vacation for the weekend, so she wouldn't have to worry about him. She grabbed her purse and keys and ran downstairs to wait for her brother. While she waited for him to come downstairs, she noticed that the mail man was walking up the lane. She walked half way to him to get the mail. "Hello! Martin how are you today?" she asked him. "Just fine Miss Shawnie. Here's your mail today. You keep cool now." he said to her. Shawnie smiled and turn to walk back to the house. She started thumbing through the mail when an yellow envelope caught her eye. She dropped all of the rest of the mail on the ground. She stared at the envelope with her hands shaking something fierce. Skeet came outside to see all of the mail scattered on the ground and Shawnie staring at an envelpoe. He walked over to her to see what it was. He glanced at the address and ripped the envelope out of her hands. "Let's go to town. I told Drea that I would be there in fifteen minutes that was ten minutes ago." Skeet told her. He pushed her to the car while picking up the mail off the ground. Shawnie got in behind the wheel. Skeet scooted her over to the passenger seat. She was just staring out in space, Skeet could have smacked her face and she wouldn't even feel it. "Shawnie, do you still want to go to town now? I can pick up whatever you need for you." he said to her. She didn't answer him. "SHAWNIE," he yelled at her She turned and looked at him. "Do you want me to pick up your thing for you? You don't have to go into town if you don't want to." he said to her again. "No I can get them myself. Let's just go." she whispered to him. He started her car and said "Okay, whatever." On the way to town she grabbed the envelope again. She turned it over and opened it up. She read the first page and yelled, "GO TO THE LAWYERS OFFICE NOW!" Skeet looked over at her as he jumped and said, "Okay okay." Skeet pulled in front of the office and turned off the engine. She grabbed the papers and walked into the office, angry. She opened the door so hard that it creaked, like it was coming off of its hinges. The secretary looked at her and said, "Shawnie, you can't see Mr. Donald today." "AND WHY NOT?" she yelled back at her. "He is out to lunch and has meetings all afternoon." She told Shawnie in a very polite voice. "Well you call him on his cell phone and tell him that it is important that I see him today?" Shawnie informed her. "I'm sorry he doesn't have his phone with him." she told her. "That is such crap. Fine I will call him myself then." Shawnie said as she pulled her cell phone out of her purse. Shawnie started dialing the number. His secetarty tried stopping her but was too late. "Hello John, this is Shawnie, and I need to see you today!" "Hell yes it is important or I wouldn't be calling you. Your secetary told me that you were out to lunch, but who in the hell eats lunch at nine-thirty in the morning. Where are you at and I will come to you?" she told him. "Fine I will meet you there. Which hole are you on?" she asked before she hung up the phone. She hung up her phone and left the building. When she got in the car, Skeet was still behind the wheel. She motioned for him to move. She slammed the car in reverse and backed up so fast the her tires screeched. They screeched even more when she put the car in drive. She drove Skeet to Drea's house and said, "I will be back in three hours so you better be ready when I get there." "Okay I will. Just be careful." he told her as he got out of the car. She pulled up at the golf course and walked to hole nine where her lawyer was waiting. She stood still while the golfer was getting ready to swing. After he swung she turned to her lawyer and said, "Can you explain these papers to me, because from what I can see we are losing our house. How can that be Mom and Dad left us the house in their will? Is that possible?" She asked him. He started reading the papers and re-reading them. Shawnie started to pace back and forth. He finally said "Shawnie, it looks like your grandparents are the ones who are selling your house." "What how can they do that? My parents are the ones who left the house to me and Skeet after they got killed. How can my grandparents have any say in it? They are not our guardians. We have no guardians." she yelled at him. "Well technically Shawn, they are your guardians, because you are not eighteen yet, so therefore they are your guardians whether it was in your parents' will or not." he told her "What? Let me get this straight. Since me or Skeet aren't eighteen yet we have to sell our house that is ours and move to Iowa because we aren't old enough to live by our selves?" she asked him, "Well, yeah!" he told her "Well what if we don't want to go. We want to stay here in Florida. They can't make us move when school is almost out and when we will graduate this year." she told him. "Well yes they can make you move. They are technically your guardians so they can do anything they want. So it looks like you will be moving to Iowa within the month. They are putting your house up for sale next week." "I am not moving. The only way I will move is over my dead body." "I'm sorry Shawnie. I wish there was something I could do. If there was something to do I would but there isn't anything my hands are tied right now." Shawnie walks back to her car and grabs her phone and calls Drea's house. "Drea can you bring Skeet home for me as soon as possible. We need to have a family meeting and it is important and this concerns you too." she asked and hung up....... |
