“Okay” she said softly. They retraced their steps finding themselves at the door of “Dawson’s Room”. Joey opened the door and with Pacey’s arms around her they started in. They looked around a cold breeze blew through them turning their blood to ice. Joey shivered, Pacey pulled her close trying to keep her from the cold.
“Okay now we have this pillow what is it that we are supposed to do with it?” Pacey thought aloud.
“Dawson’s mom is big into making pillows, she made Dawson’s one for his birthday one year and he put it on the top shelf of his closet, maybe it could be there?” she tried.
“It’s worth a try!” Pacey said with a glimmer of hope. The walked to the door but stared at it. Neither one were brave enough to open it.
“Still afraid of the boogey man?” Joey asked in a vain attempt at a joke.
“Damn straight I am!” Pacey said with out thinking twice.
“Here goes nothing!” Joey spoke and opened the door. The room was suddenly flooded with plastic bananas! Pacey and Joey looked on in horror as bananas flooded around them. After the mad rush had ended they turned to each other not sure as to what this meant. They looked up and saw a clear plastic box on the top self. Pacey reached up and brought it down. He uncovered the top and there laid a piece of paper. Joey took it out and read it.
“You’re first challenge is this. There are as you can see lots of bananas you challenge is to find that one that has a red sticker on it, after you find that one open it up and there you will find the 2nd part of your challenge. Follow the directions and from there you will find your first clue.” Pacey sighed in announce.
“Well anyone up for a little banana hunting?” Joey asked.
“Do we have a choice?” Pacey inserted dryly. They began a long and laborious hunt, after about 10 minutes Joey found the banana!
“I found it!” she called happily. Pacey came up from under the banana pile he had been searching.
“Great, now open it!” he quickly.
She looked at him.
“Not a chance in hell! You open it!” she said thrusting the banana over.
“Okay, fine, big baby!” he said taking the banana. He undid the top and inside the bottom half there was a rolled piece of paper. He took it out and unrolled it.
"Congratulations, you have finished the first half of your challenge. Now for the 2nd part! Also in this banana you will find the King to a chess board, you’re challenge is to find that board and return the kings to it’s place, there you will find you’re clue.” Pacey read.
“Okay what chess has to do with our fears is something I don’t understand but lets get going!” Joey said standing up making her way through to the door. Pacey stood still.
“What’s the matter Pace?” she asked.
“Chess, that’s the game my father and I used to play. We would play it when I was little, 6 or 7 maybe. It was always my greatest hope that I would finally measure up to his standards…. I never did. I didn’t tell them that Joey! One of my worst fears is never measuring up to meat my fathers standards! Jo I didn’t tell them that!” Pacey said his voice stressing.
“Maybe they didn’t use the chess piece because of your father but because it is a generic thing?” she said hoping to deny the fear and hope against hope that this wasn’t going to turn into something more then what it all ready was.
“Sure Joey but do you think that this room was just coincidence?” Pacey spat.
”Hey Pacey I’m sorry…..” Joey said softly.
“Forget it Jo, come on I am thinking at we should check the other side of this house, and see if what we are looking for is there,” he still out of it. He walked past her down the hall and to the top of the stairs.
“You coming?” he asked waiting impatiently. Joey had just watched him walk off not following.
“What? Yeah I am coming!” she said running to catch up with him. They moved down the side stairs to the main set and up the other side. Joey began to cling tighter to Pacey as they neared the top. The hall was like the others long and dark. They began to walk down it and as they did that same cold breeze that swept in “Dawson’s Room” began to flow there.
“Pacey…” Joey whispered hoarsely. Pacey pulled her to him tighter. They neared the end of the hall way and a hissing sound suddenly invaded the silence.
“Welcome Pacey, Joey!” a voice said.
Pacey and Joey turned around and there stood a ghastly figure dressed in a white gown. Joey just about passed out.
“Mom?” Joey managed her mouth barely able to form words.
“Why yes, sweetie! Why do you look so pale? You like you have just seen a ghost!” the figure laughed.
Joey hid her face in Pacey’s arm, wails of fear began to come though muffled from Pacey’s coat.
“Get away!” Pacey yelled at the ghost. It just laughed.
“Oh my dear, dear sweet Joey! Come to momma now!” the ghost said as sweetly as ghost could. Joey just threw herself into Pacey’s arms more.
It began to hum.
Joey’s head began to slowly inch it’s way out from it’s hiding place.
“Mom?” she again question. The song that was being hummed was one she knew all too well. Joey began to untangle herself from Pacey’s arms and move towards it.
“Joey no!” Pacey yelled trying to grab her arm. Joey eluded him. He tried to grab her but it was like an invisible wall had suddenly sprung up between them and she could no longer hear him and he couldn’t get close! Joey was just with in reach of this thing.
“Mom?” Joey again asked reaching her hand out to touch the thing. A horrid laughter filled the air as the hand of the beast seized the arm of Joey. And as the hand clenched down the figure metamorphosed right in front of them! Joey shrieked in terror and now that thing that stood holding her by the arm was now what horror movies would be the grim reaper! Joey’s face was filled with horror and shock! She opened her mouth to scream but nothing would come out!
“You should have listened to Pacey my dear!” the creature growled in a deep low voice. Tears streamed down her face and Pacey looked on looking as this creature held onto his love.
She was helpless and he knew it.
He was unable to rescue her and she knew it.
