I've been making little films since I found my dad's old silent 8mm movie camera buried deep in the closet in 1976. And so was born "Chris Mason Productions" CMP for short. My brothers and I started out doing stop-motion, clay-mation shorts and general filmic mayhem, eventually graduating into full blown CMP mini-epics such as I Was A Teenage Gargoyle. In 1982 I bought the first of many video cameras, and self-taught myself how to shoot, direct & edit video... the rest as they say is history.

ZED MOVIE POSTERZed: The Pursuit of Klavios was shot in the summer of 1984, the story followed Zed on his quest to find the man who killed his father.  Zed reluctantly teams up with Gunner to defeat the evil Klavios. Special effects included miniature spaceships, a worm-beast, explosions, full head masks and robots pulled on wires. (Click on the ZED poster to zoom in)

Zed played on the local cable public access for months, eventually leading Chris to write a sequel.

Zed: The Nomad of Limbo, was bigger and longer than the first Zed, and took longer to shoot too. Again we had the usual effects, a dinosaur-beast, a plant-beast, robots and a whole bunch of explosions.  Zed II was shot the summer of '85 and took nearly a year to edit.  Chris had a job as a video editor and he used most of the editing equipment to finish Zed II.  As with the first Zed, this outing also ran for months on the public access channel with a collection of bloopers and out-takes from both films.

It's hard to think that the ZED SAGA is nearly 20 years old. I often toy with the idea of doing another one someday, which I'm sure makes Tim quake in his boots... (Don't tell anybody but, I've got a drawer full of notes for future exploits).  ZED will return, just how or when is anyone's guess. I'm thinking of completely re-editing the two films down to one feature and re-packaging it for the 20th anniversary in 2004.

Now you know all about ZED,

CM

Below are a few behind the scenes pictures taken during the production of the two ZED films. (1984-85)

ZED CAST

GQ - ZED BOYS

Zed I cast: Brian, Tim, Dan & Sean in full costumes. CM poses with the guys on location.

ZED CAMERA ANGLE NOT THE FACE!!
Setting up a camera angle. Rehearsing the final fight for Zed II.

GOSH IT'S HOT! WHAT'S MY LINE CHRIS?
Gunner / Sean sucks his fan between takes. Todd prepares for another take.

DIRECTOR & STAR PLANT-BEAST
Gunner is a true star as CM adjusts his costume.  CM attempts to direct the very temperamental plant-beast puppet.

I GOT NO STRINGS....This is all that is left of a ZED I prop. It's an action-figure sized version of Tim as Zed used for a special effects long shot of our hero walking away from his space ship. As you can see it matches Tim in every detail. (Except last time I checked Tim was in one piece.) I built most of the props from old toys and junk from the garage, I couldn't have done any of it without the miracle of HOT-GLUE... "Hey what do you think I can get for one slightly broken ZED action figure on ebay?"
A final note about the ZED films,  I can't thank everyone involved enough for all the time and hard work they put into these two sci-fi epics.  Wearing hot and cumbersome costumes and masks that would fog up after about five minutes.  We must have put in over a 100 miles worth of hiking to and from Harbor Park,  for that alone I could never repay the "crew".  I have the fondest memories of making those two flicks - every once and a while I'll run across a prop or costume piece in a junk box in the garage and think about how much fun we had those two summers making ZED I & II.

So to all the "ZED-HEADS" out there...

THANKS!

I hope to add more pictures and stories from the old CMP production days very soon.
