Ramon found the site so appealing for its scenic beauty that he named it Cadiz conceivably to honor their ancestral place in Cadiz, Spain. Certain about the future of the sugar industry in Negros he acquired cheaply from the native Negrense vast tracts of land for sugarcane plantation in this part of the island. This plantation was then considered to be the biggest and the most progressive sugar plantations in the area in the 1880s.

Don Paco and Don Ramon were independent, maintained strict discipline to their children, household help and cane field workers. They were men of learning, speak Spanish proficiently and English and quite popular among the foreign merchants, Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino businessmen and government officials.
