He
was a man of learning. He kept himself posted on the world’s affairs by
listening over his imported Westinghouse radio, subscribing to national
papers and continuing personal contact with few knowledgeable people in
San Carlos. One of his friends was Engr. Ramsey, a black Jamaican national
who worked as an engineer at the San Carlos Sugar Milling and Company.
The two would exchange banters talking in Spanish and English over a cup
of coffee while smoking Havana cigar in the old house of Rafael.
Likewise the two daughters of Don
Paco, Carmen
and Rosario
(Charing)
were married to landed husbands coming from prominent families in Negros
Occidental.
Carmen married Don
Juan Broce, a distinguished sugarcane planter and then
mayor of San Carlos in the early years.
