HEALTH AND WELLNESS
My Dad had Huntington's Disease which was passed down to him by his Mother.  Huntington's is a genetic disease which is passed down from generation to generation.  Little was known about it until the past 25 years or so.  Although they now have  a test to tell whether a person will develop Huntington's, many refuse to take it for various reasons.  It's a dreadful disease for the patients who have it and for the family who lives with them. So far, in my immediate family, my dad, two sisters, my only brother and a niece died with it.  In my extended family, there have been aunts, uncles and cousins who have had it.

Although we didn't know this until most of us were grown and had children, if a parent has Huntinginton's, his or her children have a fifty percent chance of having it and if a child doesn't have it, they cannot pass it to their children.  I feel very fortunate that I didn't develop the disease. Following are just a few of the links with information about Huntington's.

Diabetes is another disease in which I have a special interest.  My Mother was a diabetic as were two of her sisters and a brother.  If not controlled, diabetes can result in blindness as well as other dreadful conditions.  Diabetes caused blindness and the loss of both legs in one of her sisters, her brother died in his sleep of a silent heart attack as a result of it and my sister had both diabetes and asthma which affected her eyes and heart and eventually attributed to her death..  My Mother kept hers pretty well under control and lived to be 96 years old, but, in the end, it was diabetes which caused her death.

Of course, there are many more diseases that we come in contact with every day which either family or friends are afflicted with and it would be impossible to list them all.  I have family and friends with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia and the one we probably dread more than any other, cancer.  Following are just a few of the sites which, in my opinion, are the best and most informative.  If a question isn't answered on the site, they usually contain links to other sites with even more information.  Maybe they will help us cope and understand these diseases a little bit better.

My Grandfather (My Mother's Father) was an asthmatic and suffered terribly with it.  He died when I was young, but I can still remember hearing him struggle to breath and thinking he might not breathe again. Follow the link below which has many sites which will tell you all you want to know about the disease.
