Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.It means that no one is righteous before God. Everyone that is born in this world is a sinner. Thus because of sin, we are separated from God, and in the bridge illustration we are on the other side because of sin.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Because we are all sinners, we have earned wages. Our wages are death. This is spiritual death, or separation from God not only here in this life, but in the after life, too. It means we will be punished in hell and not live in God's heaven.
GIFT OF GOD
However God has a gift which is eternal life or life everlasting in heaven with Christ when we die. This eternal life is in Jesus Christ. Like all gifts, eternal life is obtained if we receive Jesus Christ into our hearts and live by faith.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Thus in the bridge illustration, the only way man can go over to God's side is through the cross of Jesus Christ. In other words, the cross becomes our bridge so we can go over to God's side. It is the only way God has provided for us. It is not through our good works, money, religion, moral life or whatever other means we trust, but only through the cross of Jesus Christ.
WE CAN RECEIVE CHRIST BY FAITH
John 1:12 But as many as receive him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God even to them that believe in his name.
For us to obtain eternal life, we need to receive Jesus into our hearts and life by faith.
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if anyone hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and sup with him, and he with me.
Jesus is knocking at your heart's door (or your life). He wants to come in but the door is locked. Only you can open the door. When you do open the door of your life, Jesus will come in to stay and give you life eternal, peace and real joy.
HOW DO I RECEIVE CHRIST INTO MY HEART AND LIFE?
1. You must admit that you have sinned against God.
2. Repent, or turn from your sin, (or way of life) and turn toward Jesus Christ.
3. Believe that Jesus died for your sins on the cross, that he was buried and rose again on the third day.
4. Invite Jesus into your heart and life by a simple prayer of faith. You can pray this prayer and mean it in your heart:
Dear Lord Jesus, I am a sinner and I need your forgiveness. Please come into my heart and life and be my Savior and Lord. I believe that you died for me on the cross, that you were buried and then rose again on the third day. I want to follow you as your disciple. Help me to read your word, pray, fellowship and witness for you. In your name I pray Lord Jesus. Amen.
