OUR "Sleeve-type miniatures"at FremarChinse

The sleeve is the smallest member of the Pekingese family, and the most popular size during the breeds development in Ancient china and was called the "Lion Dog". To be a sleeve it must be 6 lbs. or under, anything over that is not a sleeve.

There history goes back thousands of years and they were the jealously guarded pets of the Imperial Palace. These little dogs were carried on pillows and in the sleeves of robes.

Models of the Pekingese have been found in Korean bronze of 2000 B.C. The emperor Ling Ti, who reigned about A.D. 170, felt that nothing was too good for his favorite Pekingese. Which is how most of us that are blessed with these little almost human dogs feel today.

The sleeve Pekingese should have everything in scale to it's larger counter part except smaller and with the Oriental expression.

One of the most popular sleeve Pekingese to be shown in the 1930's was "CH Humming Bee of Alderbourne" and at this time an unbelievable price of $15,000.00 was offered to buy this peke and was refused. - from the Quigley Book of the Pekingese.

"Sleeve-type" miniatures presently average between $1,000.00 to $3,000.00. Males sleeve are very popular and can be used for stud in anyone's kennel to bring down the size of offspring. The sleeve females are pets only and must be spayed as it is too dangerous for them to have a litter. The litter can consist of normal size fetuses and this would be fatal. You cannot breed strictly for the Sleeve-type miniature as they just happen. Some bloodlines produce sleeves quite often and we have seen this in our Dachari line.

The first Pekingese club formed in the United States was called "Pekingese Sleeve Dog Assoc. of America", this was in 1935 and they held an Annual Specialty. The English Kennel Club Recognized the "Sleeve Pekingese Club of Great Britain", in 1971. At their first annual show they had an entry of 179 sleeve pekes. The judge was Mrs. Betty M.A. Shoemaker. A "Sleeve Show case" was held in June of 2000 at the Rotating Specialty in Detroit and again Mrs. Shoemaker was the judge.

Sleeves are very much in demand at present. Here are some pictures of one (Tia) and one of Ms Kitty.  Both Tia and Ms Kitty now live in Bakersfield together.

Ms Kitty is over three years old and was pictured in "The Millennium Book of the Pekingese 2002" on page 230 out of UK
