| On November 16, 1892, Henry Martin, son of William Wylia Martin and Hulda Richmond Martin married Lottie Corbett, daughter of Garlain and Mary Corbett. Even though Henry, a likeable person, served a short time in slavery, Lottie Corbett was never in slavery. Lottie's father was an Indian and her mother was a Mexican. During the 1800's, Indians did not look at race or color. Indian mothers looked for a husband or wife for their children. They looked for strength and meanness in an individual. For this reason Indians married a lot of blacks. In the early 1900's, Henry and Lottie moved from Caswell County, NC to Guilford County, NC and lived off Highway 70 on the Lindsay Farm.. Henry and Lottie had 10 children. Lottie would always fix a big dinner on Sunday. She would go in the yard, call the chickens around her and feed them. After looking them over she would decide which one she wanted to kill for dinner. She would pick out the chicken and take it to the Chopping block to chop off its head. She was a good cook and a good Christian woman. One of Henry's daughters said she didn't remember much about her father because she was young when he died. But she did remember that he was blind and she would take him to the Outhouse to dispose his waste and one day she knelt over to peep and even though her dad was blind he spanked her for peeking while he was using the bathroom. |
