Henry Martin was born to a slave father, William Wylia Martin and a slave mother Hulda Richmond in Caswell County, North Carolina. He was born on the George T. Martin Plantation. At the age of six, Henry and his sister Judith was sold to James Martin for 187 lbs.
At an early age, the slave freedom law was passed, which eventually freed Henry Martin and his kinfolk. He then worked as a farmboy.
