Everglades National Park is the largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the United States. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. I developed an interest in this area as a young woman living in south Florida. If you ever get the oppertunity, and you like wilderness and wildlife, take the time to visit this interesting place at the tip of Florida.
This is the way they move a boat over the lock. The lock prevents the salt water from flowing into the fresh water man made canals that run through the river of grass that is a natural filter.
Here they are lifting the boat from the salt water side.
Here they are putting it in the fresh water side of the lock. You can see the horizon of the ocean over the lock.
We traveled through narrow canals like this one. I took this picture hoping the air plants would show up. There is interesting wildlife back here. Including West Indian manatees, birds, American crocodiles and the Florida Panther.
We didn't see any of them on this trip, but the boat makes noise, so I am sure they hide from it.
