I was with my 7 year old daughter, my 4 year old son, and six of my daughter's friends in a public place with people standing all around. crime rates Self defense products. A man suddenly threatened to kidnap the children, yelling that I had all of the cute kids and he had no one. He started charging towards us with his arms stretched out, yelling that he was going to take one of the girls to be his bride. Although I was a small woman with 8 little children clinging to me, everyone watching froze. crime rates Factors of school violence. I moved to stand between the man and the kids, yelled at the man attacking us to leave, and ordered a bystander to help. When the bystander came over, the man ran away. Also since then, my own children have grown up. It gives me great peace of mind to see how the skills they have learned keep making a difference in their lives. Last summer, when my son was about to leave our quiet town for New York City, he asked me if I had any advice for him. I thought carefully for a moment, not wanting to offend this proud young man. "Please remember," I told him slowly, "to look both ways before you cross the street. "My son straightened up to his full height and grinned down at me. "In other words, Mom," he said, putting an arm around my shoulders, "You want me to Walk with Awareness and Confidence!"Walking with Awareness and Confidence is the first skill we practice with our students in our classes. You are far less likely to be chosen as a victim if you act alert and calm than if you seem timid or absent-minded or aggressive. You are more likely to see potential danger and avoid it. AND you are less likely to get hit by a car. It was still hard to let my son go, but it helped me to know that he had the tools he needed to stay safe in most situations. Of course, he had a wonderful time in New York City!In preventing problems, it is important to remember that the most simple skills work most of the time. Being alert and calm. Yelling. Remembering that you are more important than your things.
