The problem of colonizing Mars is not technical, but economic and political. A self-sustaining community on earth can solve these problems and get human colonists to Mars.
Over the course of many decades, this community will build the space vehicles and solve the technical and social problems that keep humans off of Mars. This community, made up entirely of volunteers, but live a western lifestyle while creating the wherewithal to get to Mars
