Languages and writing systems

This book is for all those of you who want or need to know the answers to questions like these:

How does the writing system for Malayalam work?
This Hungarian word contains the combination “dzs” – how am I meant to pronounce that?
Someone tells me that he speaks Sango – what’s that and where do they speak it?
My thesis needs to include a quotation in Arabic – how do I go about typing it?
Why does my Dutch letter count tell me that “Nijmegen” is a seven letter word?

This 216 page work is only available as a PDF at the moment, at the extremely reasonable price of £5 (this may have to rise in the near future, so get your order in now!). PDFs can be viewed on your computer, and can be printed out on to A4 paper. If you need to know more about what a PDF is, then read the two italic paragraphs below; otherwise, skip past them.

PDF stands for Portable Document Format; it’s a way to ensure that the document you read is exactly as I intended it to be (unlike using, say, Microsoft Word). In order to read PDF documents, you need a PDF reader program. The best known is Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available for free download from here, the website of Adobe Systems Inc who invented PDF. Be aware that the Acrobat Reader program is about 18MB and will take about 45 minutes to download on a dial-up connection.

An alternative PDF reader program (the one I use) is Foxit PDF Reader. It too is free and is a much smaller item to download, at under 2MB. You can download it from here. (The page you are taken to has various Foxit products listed; the one you want is first on the list. Marmalade Publications have rights to include this software on the CD with our various publications.)

Lower down the page, there are instructions on how to order. But first, a sample article and a free gift!

A sample article from the work can be viewed here in PDF format. (It’s the one about Telugu, so if you don’t know what that is why not check it out?)

Free gift! While preparing this work, I gathered together the names of every country in the world and displayed them in the form used in the official language(s) of the country. The result was an fifteen page document which can be downloaded from here – a few people have already found this to be of some use in their work, and it is sure to be interest to many more.
