July 18/00 -  It's The off season for the skaters although most of them are working on new programs and perfecting them.  Markus has a new long choreographed by Michelle McDonald with music from Carlitos way, Mobsters and Untouchables.  Markus describes it  "it's really seventies stuff, which I dig."  He is also in the process of breaking in new boots.

"My triple triple combos are getting consistent and triple axle is no problem. I have lost about five pounds and the jumps feel good."

Markus performed with many others August 3rd at Barrie's Molson Centre for the annual Mariposa Gala. For more information on theToeloopy'sml gala, go to the website at:

  Interview - Feb 1/00

My nationals were in Tampere, Finland.  I was ready and I skated well before nationals, while there I felt good and relaxed.  The short program was ok, triple lutz from steps and triple axel/single toe.  Started with my lutz from steps and did my flying spin.  After landing the triple axel I had time to think if I was going to do a triple/triple or triple/double.  My mind went blank and I fired a single for some reason, I was a little ticked!   The long program I started with a double lutz, then I did a triple axel and twisted my right knee on the landing really badly.  I couldn't feel my right leg for awhile and I thought of quitting.  I knew what the other guys did and after landing the axel I thought that if I was able to put a few more triples in it would be enough.  It took awhile to get the feeling back and I missed some easy stuff.  The attendance wasn't that great but it was alot of fun, I spent some time with my fellow competitors while off ice.

This year I spent the holidays in Barrie because I had to train for nationals and more importantly Euro's.  I'm ready now, this past week I just wanted to do well and get even stronger mentally.  I trained with Paul Cousins during Canadians and I got a lot of programs in.  With one more day to go, the final preperation with Neil, Robert and Doug will be important because I think I'm skating better this year than at the same time last year.  This will be it, I'm ready and I've got lots of bullets in the suitcase.  I want to do well and finish high!

(Euro's are in Vienna, Austria)  Winter 1999:   Markus won his Nationals.

Fall 1999:   Markus won bronze at Octoberfest, placed 11th at Skate Israel and will compete at Nationals in January.
