| Teen Titles The First Part Last By: Angela Johnson (2 Time Coretta Scott King Award Winner!) "The First Part Last" is the story of Bobby, your average urban teenage boy who has his life changed when he learns that his girlfriend Nia is pregnant. Being a father isn't what he had planned for his high school years but it's happening and oddly enough, in spite of what everyone is telling him, he wants to do the "right thing" even when he doesn't really know that that is yet and no matter what the consequences are. This story is a really beautiful look at the male side of teenage pregnancy. The language is real and the ending will surprise you and leave you thinking. A definate read! This would be a good discussion starter for teachers and parents alike. The Messenger By: Lois Lowry (Author of Newbery Award Winning "The Giver") "The Messenger" is an ending to the story that Lowry began with "The Giver" and continued with "Gathering Blue". To really understand this book you will definately want to read the other two. In this final story Matty a young boy who lives in a "utopian" although somewhat medieval society begins to realize that he has special powers and insight that he simply can't explain. These powers cause him to link the two main characters from "The Giver" and "Gathering Blue" (Jonas and Kira) together. They also lead him to help the world around him in a way that he never thought possible. Like the other two books this ending will also leave you questioning what the "perfect" society and life would be. I personally love this series and think it's truly worth reading! Jr. Titles Rodzina By: Karen Cushman (Author of "The Midwife's Apprentice) "Rodzina" takes the reader on a journey from Chicago 1881 to the hope of a new home and family in the west. Rodzina Clara Jadwiga Anastazya Brodski is a sturdy Polish girl with blond braids and a brooding attitude. When her parents pass away, leaving her alone on the streets of Chicago, she is forced to take the only chance at a real future she can find. An Orphan Train. On her trip across America we see what life might have been like for the unwanted children of this era. Some found loving homes but many were looking at lives of almost endentured servitude and even possible early marriage! Despite her sometimes sour personality we come to understand and care for Rodzina and end up rooting for her to have a happy ending. Early Reader/Picture Book Titles The Next Place That I Go By: Warren Hanson Purchased As A Memorial This picture book is a beautifully written, non-denominational look at what happens after death. The text is truly poetic and is illustrated by flowing pictures that leave the reader with a sense of peace. This book would be wonderful to share with a child trying to cope with the passing of a family member, friend or even pet. No matter what your belief system or religion I'm sure you'll find it a moving book that truly inspires hope and reassures you that all will be well even as an adult reader. |
