Prologue
"Good morning."
"Good morning."
On this fresh new morning, greetings echo into the clear blue sky.
Even today, young women with angelic faces gather in Saint Mary's garden, exiting through a tall gate.
With pure hearts and bodies, they wrap themselves in dark uniforms.
With skirt pleats cleanly pressed, white sailor color flat, walking slow is preferred here. Obviously, noone is late or rushed, noone would be such an unladylike pupil.
This is Lillian Private Academy for Women.
Founded in 1901, this academy was created for the daughters of noble families. It is a school with Catholic traditions for daughters of wealthy families.
Capital city of Tokyo. Even today, much greenery remains in what was once the Musashino district. Here, watched over by the gods, a school exists where young women can remain sheltered from nursery school to college.
Through three changes of era, from Meiji through today's Heisei, this school has provided pure and refined young ladies with 18 years of continuous schooling, and sent on their way. This system continues today, a treasured academy.
She is Yumi Fukuzawa, an ordinary young lady.

Monday of Disturbed Soul
One Monday, "Wait."
At the end of a row of Ginko trees, where the path splits into two, Yumi heard a voice calling her from behind.
Because she was in front of Maria-sama's statue, for a split second Yumi thought the voice came from Maria-sama. But that was just her imagination, the voice had come from farther away.
She stopped, and while responding "yes?", looked over her shoulder. Even during this sudden action, she refrained from appearing confused or disorderly.
Beautiful and graceful to the last, the figure of an upperclassman approached.
So Yumi turned to face the other student, and with a smiling face, greet her with a gokigenyou....

Season 1 Episodes 1-3 Summary

So, what was lost in the transition to anime and manga? We didn't miss *that* much. Primarily description. Of the school, its buildings, the actions and reactions of the people. And thoughts. Less so in the manga than the anime, of course. Almost all of the thoughts that are cut out of the anime are left in the manga. Almost all. (Some scenes were moved around for the anime too, which peeved fans enormously.)

Last, but in this case, not at all least, what you lose from the anime is the *degree* to which everything happens. The emotions run much higher - the tension in each seen is greater and the reactions by the other, non-Yamayurikai, students is MUCH greater than we saw in the anime.

For instance, using the anime as the rule, we can see that Yumi is "normal girl" and we learn she admires Sachiko from afar. In the novel we learn that Yumi is really NOT normal - that she sees herself as unreasonably unexceptional, that she has significantly lower self-esteem than the anime makes clear...and that her admiration for Sachiko is really, REALLY, **REALLY** a lot. Not just a little - she's a HUUUUUUGGGE fan of Sachiko's. Think stuttering, incoherent, fangirl.

More importantly, the thing we never see in the anime (or really in the manga) is just how alienated Sachiko's attentions make Yumi feel.

Because Yumi isn't Sachiko's only fan in the student body.

And the other girls cannot, for the life of them, figure out how Yumi got so lucky. So, not surprisingly, they become jealous and resentful. They talk behind her back, they whisper about her as she walks the halls, they come to her classroom looking for her and point at her.

When Yumi sits in the music room and Sachiko finds her and plays a duet on the piano with her...Yumi has been there for *hours,* waiting for every last person at the school, including all the club members, to leave, so she doesn't have to be the subject of more stares and whispers and maybe not-so-friendly questions. (Which explains why Yumi breaks down in tears when her friends are so persistent with their questions; and why Yumi wishes Sachiko had left her alone to admire her from afar, rather than drawing her into the limelight.)

One last note on this...when Yumi comes to dance practice for the first time and Sei pushes her forward and no one moves to dance with her- what is cut out there is that all the girls hear her name and freak out at her, because *she's* the girl that the rumors were talking about. All the girls in the dance club have been practicing for months for this performance - they've never gotten to dance with Rosa Gigantea, but this newcomer does. ....And then, to make it worse, she's paired up with Rose Foetida en bouton. Not surprisingly, the dance club members stare at her the entire time - and not in a nice way.

On the yuri side of things, we really don't lose much, IMHO. When Sachiko slams into Yumi as she leaves the meeting room in the Rose mansion, Yumi notices Sachiko's body under the uniform...and immediately comments to herself that Sachiko's chest is larger than her own.

Later, when Eriko asks Yumi is she likes the low neckline on Sachiko's Cinderella costume, Sachiko comments that if Yumi likes it, then it's fine, which makes Yumi really happy, until *she* has to try on the dress. (Yumi actually thinks, sure, we're both girls, but I can appreciate a nice dcolletage too, can't I? OK, she doesn't *quite* say it that way, but that's the idea.) When Yumi realizes that Foetida is about to strip her down, she puts on the dress under her own power and is immediately dismayed by the gap between her body and the neckline. Sachiko snidely (and with great, if understated, relish) comments that Yumi thinks a little differently now that she has to wear it herself, huh? (All of this is actually captured in a small, one-shot manga story that comes with the Marimite "premium" fanbook, called "Before the Play.")

Lastly, because the roles for the parts were not fixed until the day of the play, the costumers had to leave Yumi's costume roomy enough for Sachiko to wear it if she had to. So Yumi has basically the same problem - too much space in the chest. Sachiko lends her a "gorgeous silk" bra and the costumers stuff it, so Yumi can wear the dress. (We get Sachiko's exact bra size, btw...I have NO idea why.) There is a very funny moment while Yumi experiences mortification of several kinds as she contemplates wearing Sachiko's bra.

Oh, and one last bra comment - at the veeerrrry end of the story, as Yumi watches the dancing from the grassy knoll, she thinks to herself that once she visit the Rose Mansion and returns the bra, all of this will be over. That was definitely *not* in the anime.

The final scene of the book is pretty much as you saw in the anime/manga.

Yumi has accepted Sachiko's rosary at last and they stand in front of Maria-sama, listening to the music coming from the area of the bonfire. The music switches into "Maria-sama no Kokoro," the ubiquitous theme of the entire story. Sachiko listens to it and notes that it is in 8/6 time...a waltz! She takes Yumi's hands and they dance together, watched only by Maria-sama and the moon...all very romantic.

From the shrine, they visits Sachiko's house. To her surprise, Yumi finds her brother, Yuuki there with none other, Kashiwagi Suguru at his side. Yuuki, called as "Yukichi" at his school - Hanadera Gakuin, is also a member of Hanadera's student body like Suguru. Apparently, Yuuki was kidnapped from his friends at an arcade by Kashiwagi-senpai. It is a little secret that Suguru is a bisexual person (leaning more towards men) and has set his eyes on Yuuki. For Sachiko, Yuuki seems to be the only male from them that she isnt afraid of because he is Yumis brother.

Sachiko, Sayako (Sachiko's mother), Suguru, Sei, Yumi and Yuuki play card and board games at the Ogasawara house. After that, Sei, Yumi and Yuuki decide to stay over for the night. Yuuki strongly objects to sleep in the same room with Kashiwagi-senpai. Meanwhile, Rosa Gigantea and Kashiwagi Suguru do not get along very well.  For Yumi, she gets to sleep alongside with her beloved onee-sama, Sachiko-sama.

Sayako writes - Nakakiyono Toono Nefurino Minamisame Naminori Funeno Otonoyokikana A palindrome and an ancient Japanese scripture that you write and slip it under your pillow to see a good New Years dream. Sachiko thanks Yumi for her visit because she was extremely troubled with Suguru-san staying at her house for the holidays.

Season 2 Episode 1 Summary

The ep starts out with Yumi meeting Sachiko in front of the Maria-sama statue. Yumi gives a bit of recap of the events in Season 1.

After the OP, we go back in time to the day before New Year's Eve. Yumi misses Sachiko because she hasn't been able to see her during winter break. Sei calls her and invites her on a "date," a New Year's meeting of the Yamayurikai. Yumi agrees, happy that she'll be able to see Sachiko.

The next day, Yumi goes to meet everyone, but Sei is the only one there to meet her. Yumi is confused and Sei says, "Did I say anyone else was coming? ... You fell into my trap, Yumi-chan." The look on Yumi's face right after that is PRICELESS.

Then they get into the car, and it takes Yumi a minute to notice that Sei's the one who's going to drive them. Then when Sei took off I really feared for Yumi's life... @_@ Then Yumi asks how long she's been driving and she says that today is her first time, although she's been training. Yumi gets panicked and asks to be let out of the car, but Sei brushes off her concern.

They pull up to the gate of a building and Yumi asks where they are (she wonders if it's a hospital, or a school, lol). Sei doesn't answer her at first, but as they're driving in she tells her to look at the nameplate on the gate, and Yumi sees that it says "Ogasawara."

Yumi is amazed by everything, like how big it is and how the gates open automatically... ^^ Yumi castigizes Sei for not telling her where they were going before, because she wanted to make emotional preparations for visiting Sachiko's house...

They are greeted by a butler, and when they walk inside they see Yuuki (Yumi's brother) and Kashiwagi (Sachiko's fiance); Kashiwagi has his arm around Yuuki's shoulders. Yumi asks Yuuki why he's there, and he says he ended up coming there after losing a bet to Yuuki in an arcade... ^^

Then Sachiko and her mother, both dressed in kimono, greet them. Sachiko introduces Yumi to her mother, who applauds Sachiko's taste in choosing Yumi.

Then they meet up with the rest of the Yamayurikai, and they talk about Yuuki being Yumi's brother and how they look alike. Then they play some card games, with Suguru and Yuuki. Yumi is horrible at it because her face gives everything away. ^^

Sei and Kashiwagi have a minor disagreement, both quoting superstitions about how being good at a game means such-and-such about a person, and Eriko remarks to Youko that Sei and Kashiwagi are natural enemies.

Later, Sei shows Yumi to the bathroom (which, of course, is HUGE). Yumi asks Sei if she's ever been to Sachiko's house before, and Sei says that she has, the summer before.

Sei says that they (the current Roses) should hang out at Sachiko's place with everyone sometimes after they graduate. She says the best times would be like today, when Sachiko's father and uncle(s?) are gone. She tells Yumi that the Ogasawara men are visiting their mistresses today. They all have secondary residences away from the main house. On New Year's Day they have a family party, but for 2 or 3 days they give the servants time off and go to visit their mistresses.

Yumi is surprised that Sei knows so much about Sachiko's family, and Sei tells her that she heard it from Youko. She says that her (Sei's) job was to bring Yumi to make the atmosphere more lively.

Sei heats some takoyaki up in the microwave. Sachiko asks what it is and then, when Sei tells her, remarks that it's unusual. This reminds Yumi of how different her life is from Sachiko's.

Sei holds one out to Yumi and asks her to try it to see if it tastes okay. Sei feeds it to her and then wipes her mouth, telling her she has food around it. Then Sachiko scolds Sei, telling her not to give Yumi the bad habit of eating while standing up. She scolds Yumi too, of course. ^^

Sei offers Sachiko some takoyaki and Sachiko turns her down.

Kashiwagi walks in, and asks Sachiko if she always does fun stuff like that at school. She's surprised that he called it "fun," but he continues, "Even if you try to hide it, I can tell. Sa-chan, goofing around with Yumi like that is the thing you find most fun." Yumi's surprised to hear this, of course.

Sachiko takes the tea and goes. Sei tells Kashiwagi to keep his hands off of Yumi.

In the novel, Sei has a very harsh tone of voice when talking with Kashiwagi and vice-versa. But in many ways, Yumi is pretty constructive in using their help whenever she needs it...

Most of the Yamayurikai have plans, so they leave. Rei and Yoshino are going to Hakone with their families, Eriko is traveling somewhere with her family, and Youko and Shimako both have plans as well. Eriko asks Kashiwagi and Yuuki to act as bodyguards for the girls. Yumi's surprised to hear that Yuuki is spending the night. ^^

Yumi is afraid that Sachiko will tell her to go home, but then Sachiko asks Yumi if she has any plans for tomorrow, and when Yumi says no, she tells her to stop being so nervous and invites her to spend the night.

Yumi is a little shocked by how big the rooms are in Sachiko's house. Yumi wonders if Yuuki and Kashiwagi have gone to bed already, and Sei says "I hope Yuuki-kun will be all right..." ^^ Yumi doesn't understand, of course. -_-
Then Sachiko comes in and suggests they make good luck charms to put under their pillows so that they'll have good first dreams of the new year ("hatsuyume"). They do a chant thing to make the charms; Sachiko goes first, then Yumi does it and Sachiko compliments her on it. :)

They go to bed. Lying there, Yumi thinks to herself that she never imagined being able to spend New Year's Eve sleeping next to Sachiko, and that this year will be a good one.

She wonders if Sachiko has fallen asleep, but then Sachiko tells her that she's happy Yumi came today, and invites her to come over again sometime if she'd like. Yumi repeats Sachiko's words to herself in her head.

Then the setting switches back to the one at the very beginning of the episode, where Yumi and Sachiko meet at the Maria-sama statue. Yumi remarks that it's spring already, and Sachiko is confused.

Yumi thinks to herself that her first year here is passing already, dreamlike, and that time is cruelly passing. Then she implores Maria-sama to let the shininess of this current time in her life last forever.

Season 1 Episode 13 Summary

Some of the stuff is a little out of order, because they keep cutting back and forth between everyone and it's easier just to tell some parts in order.

It starts out where ep 12 left off--Sachiko has disappeared! Yumi calls her name a few times, and Sachiko comes back. Turns out she was just checking out the jean shop next door. She and Yumi go inside, and she tells Yumi she wants a pair like hers. She tries on a pair, and is dismayed to find out that they are too long. However, Yumi explains to her that they're made like that... She decides she wants to go buy sneakers next
(in the anime she doesn't actually say it but it's implied; she says it outright in the novel).

Yoshino is still bummed about Rei's date with Chisato, but decides that she will have to just have fun on her home, since it's a day off from school after all. She goes shopping.

Shimako and Shizuka had lunch at the Rose Mansion. There's some more weird conversation between them, and Shizuka tells Shimako to follow her and runs off to the place where Shimako's card was hidden (the Environmental Maintenance Committee bulletin board). Shimako arrives there out of breath, and Shizuka tells her that she wanted to see the "real" her that was hidden beneath her honor student "mask." She also tells her that she knows she is looking for someone who understands her. She asks Shimako if she hates her for saying things that are too intimate/personal, but Shimako says "No, I like you, Shizuka-sama."

Minako and Tsutako get to the movie theater and find out that Rei and Chisato have already left (they thought the start time of the next showing was the same as the end time of the current showing, but they were wrong). They decide to look for Shimako and Shizuka instead, as Minako saw them getting takeout and assumed that they are planning to go eat in a park or something.

Shizuka says to Shimako, "If Rosa Gigantea didn't exist, we might have become soeurs. But Rosa Gigantea exists." Then Shimako says, "We both care for her greatly." Then Shizuka asks if Shimako likes the song "Ave Maria," and when Shimako says yes, she proceeds to sing the Bach/Gounoud version of it (in latin, but not with the usual "Ave Maria" prayer lyrics...  the seiyuu for Shizuka is singing and not another singer. Wow!)

Shimako comes back to the second-floor room of the Rose Mansion and finds Sei there. Sei says that she was called there by Shizuka. Shimako says she missed Sei and cries on her. Sei tells Shimako that it's okay to cry and show weakness. Then Sei mentions that spring will come soon, and both remember that they met last spring...

Sachiko tells Yumi a little bit about her past, about how she tried to fit in. They run into Yoshino and invite her out to tea with them. At the cafe, they run into Tsutako and Minako! The five of them have a nice time together, with all of them putting aside their usual annoying behavior (Minako and her newspaper, Tsutako and her camera, and Yoshino and her Rei).

That night, Chisato goes to Yoshino's house to talk to her. She tells Yoshino that Rei was very kind but that she called her "Yoshino" without realizing it, and that no matter where they went or what they did, Yoshino was "inside" Rei. Yoshino holds her as she cries and apologizes for Rei's insensitivity. Yoshino then goes over to Rei's house and chews her out. She tells her that her kindness can actually hurt people, too... Then we see that Rei has baked Yoshino a cake as an apology for that day.

Yumi wants to call Sachiko to thank her for the date, but she's nervous about what to say if someone answers. She practices a little speech, but is still hesitating when the phone rings. Guess who it is? ;) Sachiko also starts in with a formal greeting, but is relieved when she finds out it was Yumi who answered the phone. She was nervous about possibly having to talk to one of Yumi's parents too! Sachiko asks what Yumi has told her parents about her, and Yumi says she's told them that Sachiko is a great Onee-sama. Then Sachiko jokingly asks if Yumi has told them that she is a selfish and hysterical person, and Yumi joking says "a little."

We see a very short flashback of Yumi grabbing Sachiko's arm during their date... also very cute :D Then Sachiko says that they should go out together again sometime, and then they say good night and hang up. Yumi is pretty happy by this point and thinks that she will get to see Sachiko again tomorrow and that it will surely be a wonderful day.

Rosa Foetida, Eriko is accused to have joined a dating club. Tsutako (the photographer) managed to capture some of Eriko's dating events with her camera. She shows the photos to Yumi who still does not believe it. Yumi is feeling uneasy about this and still does not know whether she should speak to somebody regarding this issue. To make the matter worse, Eriko is talking about "ideal man" to Yumi.

Tsutako got another shoot from Eriko's dating. When she showed it to Yumi, they were not aware that Rosa Chinesis, Youko was nearby. Youko forces them to tell her the whole story.

Next day, Lillian newspaper put a headline regarding Eriko. Rei is extremely furious about this, although Rosa Chinesis and Rosa Gigantea are calm. Needless to say, the principal calls Eriko to her office. This time, the whole Rosa gang plus Minako join the meeting. Other than the principal, there are three young men and one old person. The young men are the ones who are spotted in the dating photos. It turns out that the old man is Eriko's father and the three young men are her brothers. Season 2 Episode 4 Summary

Yumi gets so excited when talking with Shimako, thinking that Shimako was thinking of leaving the school. Shimako said, Thank You...like she really thought about leaving.

This scene is better portrayed in the novel, so I understand that it leaves people who haven' read the novel to scratch their heads... Actually, the anime episode does follow through exactly what is written, but hmm...I guess the tone of written words is hard to express visually here.

The main point here is Shimako and Yumi's dialogue:

Shimako: "There is the fact that if I can find a soeur that best fits me, but there is also the [pressure] that she has to be the Rosa Gigantea en bouton in her first year"
Yumi: "But Shimako-san, you went through the same thing"
Shimako: "Yes that is true, but I think that I am not allowed to choose a soeur"
Shimako finished her sentence in silent melancholy, and Yumi suddenly has a moment of uneasiness.

Hmm...even in English this doesn't come out well...perhaps it's a "Japanese thing" that the last sentence "Shimako finished her sentence in silent melancholy, and Yumi suddenly has a moment of uneasiness" equates to an underlining meaningof "as if Yumi had a rush of thought that Shimako was thinking about going out of Lillian."

It probably also helps if by reading the novel, you get an understanding that Shimako portrays herself as isolated from the rest of Lillian's students...something that will be revealed towards the end of Episode 7 and the beginning of Episode 8.

Season 2 Episode 5 Summary

The roses all graduate...

In the novel, Satou Nobuko (the girl behind Satou Sei when she is standing in line) is the one that tells Sei that the line is moving, and she sighs jokingly that she always got the short-end of the stick all these years for being the unfortunate person who is always after Sei in Japanese alphabetical order.

Eriko and Sei both met at Lillian kindergarten. Their first meeting didn't go so well as Eriko suddenly went up to Sei and asked her "Are you American?" In the novel, Sei was asked repeatedly by strangers as a child how "she doesn't look Japanese" due to her light colored hair and deep checkbone. It was a delicate age for Sei, and she often pondered why she was different from the rest. Eriko then suddenly pops up in their first meeting with such a question, and Sei just snapped. Sei got pissed off at Eriko for her rudeness and lashed back by "Go away, you deko-chin!" Deko-chin is a rude way calling someone somewhat similar to "big-forehead" Hence, now you have one of the relationship chart explained in the Marimite relationship chart. Sei and Eriko will remain archrivals, and when they came into the same class in middle school each looked at each other in disgust.

About Youko's meeting with Eriko and Sei. Youko came into Lillian in middle school by taking the entrance exam. By this time, there were two groups of students: those who were in Lillian from the beginning (from kindergarten and elementary school) and those who took the entrance test and came from the "outside." Sei and Eriko are in the former group, Youko was in the latter.

There is some discrepancy here between the novel and in the anime. In the anime, it seems as if Youko first approached Sei. In the novel also, the story about Youko's encounter with Sei was written first. As in the novel, it was Sei who told Youko about Lillian's tradition of calling one another by their "name+san":

Youko: "Satou-san, have you decided which club to join?"
Sei: [snickers] "hmph, Middle school admissioner huh..."
Youko: "Yes?"
Sei: "It has been a while since anyone in the same class has referred to me as 'Satou-san.' That was pretty fresh, Youko-san "
Youko: "Well thanks for telling me 'Sei-san' "

However, the novel goes a bit further several pages later that Youko met Eriko first. In their class, they needed to choose a class president - Mizuno Youko. Mizuno Youko in turn, wanted a vice-president to support her and she chose Torii Eriko. The novel writes their meeting as:

There was no need for two honor students in the same class. So I'll give that role to Youko. Besides, I was becoming weary of always being the one taking the leadership.

However, Eriko's plan failed when the time came to choose a class president. No one came foward to become a candidate, so the Eriko recommended Youko for the role. Then, Youko came foward and asked that she needed a partner to support her and she chose Eriko. Though Youko's reason was that 'she didn't know right-from-left as a newcomer to this school,' Eriko immediately jumped to the conclusion that this was Youko's way of getting back at me.

Therefore, Eriko had no choice but to spend an entire year with a person she didn't want to be involved with.

Youko: "Nice to meet you, 'Torii-san' "

I'd never forget that look on Youko's face. Therefore as a slight gesture of payback I did not correct her on her improper usage of calling someone else's name.

Judging that Youko didn't realize calling Sei as "Satou-san" as wrong until being told by her, it is apparent that Youko actually first met Eriko.

Note about Lilian Middle School's uniform. I was surprised how the animators did take note in the difference between the high school and middle school uniform even though this wasn't stressed until several volumes later in Volume 16: "Variety Gift." In the chapter "Chocola and Portrait" page 88, it details:

Although at first glance, the middle school uniform and the high school uniform looks very similar. However, there is one distinct difference above the chest area. In contrast to the sailor-collar itself becoming the tie in high school, the middle school uniform has a tie coming from the black line in the sailor-collar

Come to think about it, the anime missed one memorable flashback - the scene where Sei and Youko talk about how they write their name in kanji. Youko comments on how Sei's kanji is very holy (they word itself is the kanji for holy -
), yet Sei jokes that her name isn't fit to be explained with such a nice word. Sei opts to explain her kanji as "ear, mouth, and king" was suitable enough - the kanji word is made up of (ear), (mouth), and (king)

Sachiko cries a little too early compared to the novel. But overall, this scene did a good job, especially with Rei coming in to the rescue. And in the scene where Youko thinks about what would happen if she cried at the podium - that was excellent. In the novel, you also see Sei and Eriko's point of view if Eriko cried at the podium as did Sachiko, "if Youko ever cried at the podium, I'd just laugh." Eriko and Sei have a strong sense that Youko would never be so emotional so the thought of Youko crying is something they can never imagine.

Rosa Kanina goes off to Italy.

Season 2 Episode 6 Summary

Super Rosa Gigantea indeed makes an appearance, and several times too.

This episode was really heart-warming, even though I read it in the novel, they did a superb job in portraying this chapter in this episode. Too bad there wasn't the scene where Sei unties a first year student's tie when Shimako was taking care of that garden...

However, they really impressed me on how they portrayed the story into three parts: first half from Shimako's point of view, second half from Sei's point of view, and the last from third-person. I was wondering how they were going to do the interchanging points of view as in the novel, but Ms Chiaki (screen writer for this episode) did a fantastic job in making this episode stand out as a preview of what's to come...

By the way, if the dialogue at the preview for the next episode was too fast for you, Yoshino was basically introducing Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard."

The dialogue went something like this:

Yoshino: "A huge landowner in southern Russia by the name of Madame Ranevskaya lived in Paris with her lover after her husband passed away. However, she was deceived by her lover and decided to return to her old land as her finances depleted. But even that land was put on collateral and it was apparent that bankruptcy hung over her head. This is a story that portrays the fall of the old landed gentry and the aristocracy while seeing the rise of the new bourgeoisie class."

Sachiko: "That is 'The Cherry Orchard,' Yoshino. Please do not give out a preview for a different story"

Shimako: "No, my current heart's intuition is the same as Chekhov's. Good-bye the old life, hurrah to the new!!

Yumi: "Next 'Maria-sama ga Miteru' episode: 'Cherry Blossom' "

Sachiko: "It seems as Shimako will encounter certain turn of events..."

Season 2 Episode 7 Summary

And so, the new year has begun. No more Youko-sama, Eriko-sama, and Sei-sama. So, they actually changed the OP shot of "Maria-sama no niwa ni".

The anime didn't start off with Noriko's "Where is this? What year am I in?" Atsuko-san and Miyuki-san didn't even appear with Touko-chan...

Shimako, aka the new Rosa Gigantea is in melancholy...

Yumi is worried about Shimako's melancholic atmosphere.

Yumi: "I was anticipating on something to happen with Sachiko-sama during the Spring break, but there was nothing..."
Hmm, a little foreshadowing of Yumi & Sachiko's soeur relationship in "Rainy Blue" here...

Yumi and Yoshino are classmates for the first time in thirteen years...and so are Tsutako-san and Mami-san!!! I hope they bring out Yamaguchi Mami out a little more (too bad this season won't get to Shimura Takuya's story)...oh, wait yes she does have an important part in the next episode! wa-i.

Nijou Noriko-chan makes her debut!
She's a little bit more reserved than I expected from the novel. But Shimizu Kaori's voice seems to match her tone about "being different from the rest."

Noriko-chan and Shimako's initial contact underneath the cherry tree!.

Sei-sama and Yumi at Lillian University cafeteria.

And more foreshadowing of "crumbling" Sachiko-Yumi soeur relationship...

Matsudaira Touko-chan debuts! Hmm...
I wonder how people who haven't read the novel will make on Touko-chan's first impression (I imagine it would be somewhat negative as most people who have read the novel as well....only to turn 180 degrees into one of the favorable characters later)

And we get to Noriko and Touko's encounter...minus Atsuko-san and Miyuki-san. As Touko-chan explains to Noriko who's who, Noriko realizes that the person she couldn't take her eyes off at the cherry tree was [the current] Rosa Gigantea.

Shimako seems to be happy now.

Noriko's background revealed..."How ironic that I am an avid admirer of Buddhist statues and temples, yet I am student of a Catholic high school". Shimako's father makes his first appearance.

Yeah! Shimako in traditional Japanese kimono! And, by now you know what Shimako's secret: "I am a daughter of a Buddhist priest and temple, how contradictory that I attend a Catholic school."

Preview of next episode....rap-style!? "Ichou, Ichou! Sakura, Sakura!"

Season 2 Episode 8 Summary

As a reader of the novel, I was rather disappointed. They shouldn't have combined the two chapters "Ichou no Naka no Sakura" and "BGN" into this one episode. The reason why the novel excelled at this was because "Ichou~" and "BGN" were two chapters that corrollate each other as front and back. Putting these two chapters together into one episode made me feel that this episode was hastily put together...especially at the scene of St. Mary's Religious Trials. It made it less interesting to see what was going on behind the scenes ("BGN" chapter) at the trials.

The tension created by separating different views was just simply not there. I was afraid of that happening from the beginning but believed they can do it right after the Sei/Shimako episode. But this is really quite a let down. It's still a nice episode but by telling the story at a 3rd person view only, emotion is somewhat lacking.

The brilliance of the way the novel was written was how the first part showed from the perspective of Shimako and Noriko, while the "background noise" second half showed the same perspective from the members "in the background" (the other bara-no-yakata members). It also lessened the fact that the whole "Ichou no naka no Sakura" was actually the first written chapters of "Maria-sama ga Miteru"

They cut the scene where Yumi asks Mami-san to help out the event. I think non-novel readersvwill be confused why Mami-san is there assisting behind Shimako without explaining this...

Come to think of it, Touko-chan didn't even say "You look better on this!" when she pulled out the juzu-beads at St. Mary's Religious Trials. Nor did Shimako shout nor did Noriko fall down.

On the plus side, they did give a good foreshadowing of Sachiko and Yumi's relationship with "half-day date at the amusement park." But by the looks of it, "Rainy Blue" is still at least two episodes away...

And Touko should be more evil! I actually hated her when I read the Cherry Blossom and the following Rainy Blue. But I don't feel that there will be enough hate for Touko in the anime. :P.

I despised Touko when I first read the novel. Her first impression was a mischievous, wily and usurper. However, by the way Ms. Konno Oyuki writes it, her whole appearance went 180 degrees from one of my least favorite characters into one of the lovable characters mid-way in "Parasol o Sashite."

I was hoping that the anime would give that same impression and the same "turn-of image" to non-novel readers, but I felt that the anime didn't do that. Perhaps they might make up for it in the first part of "Rainy Blue," but as I said, first impressions are important...and Touko-chan was less evil in her primary appearance which I found it to be lacking.

Season 2 Episode 9 Summary

Did anyone notice that Rei-sama was reading "Ibara no Mori 2" at the beginning of the episode?

One part that I was really looking foward to, but was cut out in the anime, was the part where the three second-year students were walking in the student hall in melancholy. I believe this was an important scene which gives an introductory pointer that this and the following two-three episodes are taking place simultaneously on the timeline. As a matter of fact, the first year students courageously going up to their second-year members of the Yamayurikai to say gokigenyou was left off. Although, the part where a single Rosa Gigantea (Shimako) fan says gokigenyou to Shimako is shown....I wonder if they'll continue doing this similar scene for Yoshino and Yumi respectfully.

Noriko's true characteristics and personality begins to shine (finally), as she goes on a marathon spurt of explaining her reasons on not joining any club to Shimako. This sequence in front of the St. Mary was done with a great applaud by me.

I'm glad they didn't cut the Tsutako-Shimako dialogue scene. This is one part from the novels that I liked where Tsutako-san shines as a great friend and advisor to her peers. Now, if only Mami-san had more appearance roles in the anime...

And so, Noriko-chan officially becomes a member of the Yamayurikai as the new Rosa Gigantea en bouton by "borrowing" Shimako's rosario. One thing that was interesting was how they changed the following dialogue in that rosario scene:

Novel
Noriko:
志摩子さんが卒業するまでそばにくっついて離れないから (I will always be at Shimako-san's side until graduation)
Shimako:
だったらもう、私は寒くないわ (Then, I won't be cold anymore)

to

Anime
Noriko:
志摩子さんが卒業するまでそばにくっついて離れないから (I will always be at Shimako-san's side until graduation)
Shimako:
不思議ね・・・こんなにずぶ濡れなのに、少しも寒くないの (Isn't it strange...how [we] are wet, yet [we] aren't cold)

And the addition of Noriko's word
片手で仲間を、もう片手で私をつかんでおけばいい (Cling on to your friends on one hand, and me on the other) was also surprising. To give you the truth, I actually found the anime-version portrayal of these dialogues to be better for a postive outlook for the future than the novel.

I felt this episode was tailored towards fans who have read the novel. Quite a lot of Shimako's monologue were left out which I think are quite pivotal to the story. During the scene of Noriko's first visit to Yamayurikai, Shimako was looking to and from Rei, Sachiko and Noriko, with a worrisome expression. You have to read the novel in order to know what is on Shimako's mind at that time. I wonder how many viewers can actually get it if they haven't read the novel beforehand.

A very subtle thing to watch out in this episode that will be one of the key points in the next episode. Take notice of whom did Rei ask to serve tea when Noriko first visited Yamayurikai. Too bad they didn't show how they were seated when they were "interviewing" Noriko.

Season 2 Episode 10 Summary

Overall, the story stayed true to the novel.

The scene at the bakery was done well, especially the little details of Yoshino eating the nut on her green-tea crepe. Too bad that Rei-sama's hair didn't get caught in the tart.

Still, I wonder if the non-novel readers would understand that episodes for last week, this week, and next three weeks are taking place simultaneously. To me, it didn't seem like the meeting at the Yamayurikai was the same one as from last week...

The first glimpse I saw of Yoshino and Rei's homes.

Something is missing in the scene where Yoshino throws her school shoes on the floor. In the novel Yoshino's dialogue with Yumi was with a more sarcastic tone. But still, this is a little minor place that can be overlooked. On the other hand, I believe that it still lacks the "punch" that there isn't the scene where the three second-year students sigh in melancholy in the school hallway.

Tanuma Chisato cuts off her hair. Her appearance in this season with more dialogue made a good impression.

Yoshino starts pondering about finding a soeur. Foreshadow of her promise with Eriko-sama, perhaps...

Season 2 Episode 11 Summary

In the novel, this whole thing is taking place at the same time as the previous two episodes, but alas there have been no notion shown in this anime of such inter-twining.

So we begin with Sachiko-sama cancelling the amusement park date with Yumi. Something seems to have come up (most likely to be answered in the last episode). And, Touko-chan devilishly appears...

[OP sequence]

Yep, you can't forget about Yumi's blue umbrella...that is an important symbolism.

Minako-sama takes Yumi over to show Sachiko-sama with Touko-chan. Yumi thinks Minako-sama has brought her over so she can get a scoop on a "Red Rose Revolution" (by the way, the Lillian Newspaper showing that is pretty cool). However, Minako-sama does not want to see Yumi and Sachiko break up and end up in the same predicament as her friend.

While no name is given here (as well as in the novel), a short story was released in this February issue of Cobalt Magazine about this soeur-triangle incident. Yasuko is the gran soeur, Asaka (Minako-samas friend) is the 'real' petit soeur and Masumi is the usurper.

Actually, the memory shot doesn't even look like them at all...

Minako-sama does not want to see the Rosa Chinensis soeurs to end up in a soeur-triangle, nor does she wish to see Yumi putting on a facade smile.

Yumi tries on her clothes to wear for the next date she promised with Sachiko-sama. Yuuki is happy to see Yumi finally smiling again. Yuuki however strikes a good point on worrying about Yumi on her school life being so dependent revolving around Sachiko-san.

The phone ringsand we finally see a glimpse of Yumi and Yuukis mom! Its only her back though. Yuuki hands over the phone to Yumiand it is Sachiko-sama. Once again, the date has been cancelled since something has come up. Rage of emotions and questions churns up within Yumibut she chokes them down into her id and says its okay. I thought this part was articulated rather well along with the novel. Good job.

Cut to scene on the next day where Touko-chan is waiting in front of the Bara-no-Yakata. It is as if she was waiting for Yumi-sama to appear just to show that she is much more closer to Sachiko-sama. Touko-chan hands Sachiko-samas wristwatch in front of Yumi.

Good thing the anime did not forget to cut out the hydrangea lecture.

[Commercial break & eyecatch]

Cut to scene at the Yamayurikai. In the novel, the events that take before this was the incident where Noriko-chan was lectured by Sachiko-sama on how to address Shimako. No mention whatsoever was done in this scene, so Id taken to assume that in the anime, the past two episodes were not happening simultaneously as in the novel.

Yumi asks Sachiko-sama to decide on a next date for their amusement park trip. Yumis psychology here is on the verge of frailty as she begins to mutter As long as I get a promise, I will be at ease until that date and I dont mind it becoming cancelledas long as I get a promise, I will be rest assured

Touko-chan cuts in, whispers something into Sachiko-samas ear, and they start to leave. Yumi makes a strong move here by addressing Onee-sama, we are still under discussion. Sachiko-sama turns back and tells Touko-chan to wait downstairs, and tells Yumi that YumiI cannot make a promise right now because I dont have such schedule. Pleaseunderstand. Sachiko-sama starts to walk off. Yumi dashes to Sachiko-sama Please, dont go! while Touko-chan addresses Sachiko-sama to hurry up. Yumi makes her boldest move yet by yelling at Sachiko-sama So youve chosen Touko-chan over me! Sachiko-sama turns back with a very scary look by ending the conversation with okoruwayo (I will get angry) to Yumi.

Alas, however there was one thing missing in the anime that was in the novel Yumis monologue after this in the novel was of a very strong conjecture. Since non-novel readers would be eager to know what was going on inside Yumis mind after this, here is a rough translation of that scene (Mari-mite Vol. 10 pg. 193-194):

Touko-chan calls out for haste from beneath the stairwell. As her (Sachiko) hand reached for the doorknob, Yumi desperately yells

So youve chosen Touko-chan over me!
Sachiko-sama paused for a moment. As she turned back, her facial expression was of anger that [Yumi] had never seen before.

[continue this further and] I will get angry.

Leaving behing that remark, Sachiko-sama left the room and headed downstairs where Touko-chan was waiting.

Get angry?

Grimaced Yumi as she stood alone in the empty room. If she wants to get angry, go ahead and get angry. Its much better than making up for the debt with kind smiled or sweet words.

That is why Yumi felt great that Sachiko-sama showed such expression to her. She was able to make Sachiko-sama into such level of anger. Whether or not what was in that angered emotion, it showed that Yumis thoughts reached directly at Sachiko-sama.

Yumi thinks to herself what a twisted expression of amour she has to ask for a promise that cannot be given or to say such things to make Sachiko-sama angry.

She can feel herself becoming more and more unstable. Yumi looks at the rain hitting the side of the window glass.

Its this rain. Its all the weathers fault. That is why my mood does not clear up.

Going back to the anime.

Yumi is in melancholy as she walks with the last thought written in the novel in mind.

Once again, there is a difference between the novel and the anime. In the novel, Sei-sama comes into Yumis umbrella because she forgot her umbrella. Sei-sama quickly figures something is wrong with Yumi and figures it has to deal with that horizontal roll that she just walking alongside with Sachiko just a few moments ago. Sei-sama tells Yumi that she is willing to lend an open arm to discuss what Yumi has mushed deep within her emotion. Sei-sama adds, Yumi-chan, please do not give up on Sachiko. Yumi does not respond as she thinks to herself that she cannot always keep on relying on a person that had graduated that this is something that she needs to resolve on her own. Too bad this scene was entirely cut from the anime but I guess time constraints do happen.

Cut to scene at the convenience store. Yumi buys a box of butter (not shown in anime) that her mother asked her buy on the way back home. However, her beloved blue umbrella gets stolen. That was the last straw that cut loose the emotions that she packed into the bag within her.

Yumi comes home all wet and crying.and we get our first shot of Yumis mom and dad! This is the first appearance of Fukuzawa Miki (mom her surname before being married was Houribe) and Fukuzawa Yuichiro (dad). Take the yuu from dad and mi from mom, and you get yumi. Take the yuu from dad and ki from mom, and you get yuuki. Of course, currently the credits at the ending only says Yumis Mother, but there that trivia for those non-novel readers. As Miki, Yuichiro, and Yuuki looks at Yumi in shock, Yumi begins to cry in pain and sorrow as she screams Dont take peoples stuff!! Dont take the things I cherish away from me!!!!

Its Sunday again and she decides to call Sachiko-sama to apologize on what happened on Friday. She calls the Ogasawara household only to have the call taken byKashiwagi Suguru. He tells Yumi that Sachiko cannot answer the phone as she became carsick. Suguru, not knowing what is going on within Yumis mind, rest assures her that Sachiko is doing fine and that Touko-chan is taking care of her at her side. Yumi figures that this was Sachikos answer to her question Yumi yelled at her that fateful day. Yumi reaches for her rosarioand takes it off. She had become tired of being in doubt of someone she had admired.

Yumi refused to come to the Yamayurikai meetings that week. Yoshino, being worried, asks what is wrong and tries to help. Yumi, however refuses that it is all too late. Yumi, clenching and shoving her rosario into her skirt-pocket, walks out of the school, leaving a concerned Yoshino behind. There, Sachiko-sama is waiting for Yumi. Sachiko-sama, with the same kind voice, calls Yumis name. I should let you know what is going on, says Sachiko-sama as she touches Yumis tie.

Yumi, looking up to her beloved oneesama, is in mixed emotions her feelings for her beloved gran soeur still exists, yet ponders deeply how many more times she will be allowed to call Sachiko-sama as her oneesama. Her heartbegan to melt with her beloved oneesama beside her. Just then, Touko-chan appears.

Yumis melting heart froze instantly as she deduced that Sachiko-sama was not waiting for her, but was actually waiting for Touko-chan. Yumi coolly says to Sachiko-sama, oh, I understand and begins to walk away. Touko-chan then has the nerve to say, Wait Yumi-sama. Your discussion has not been finished yet. Would you care to join us on the way as you discuss your matter? Right, Rosa Chinensis with Sachiko-sama agreeing. Yumi could not stand it any more and runs away into the rain.

Filled with emotions of rage, anger, distraught, sorrow, fearYumi cries as she runs in the rain. She is at the bottom of her troubleswhen she catches a glimpse of Sei-sama ahead of her. Yumi, throws everything she was carrying and jumps into Sei-samas arms crying as if clinging on to her last hope of light. Sei-sama has been always there for Yumi whenever in trouble. Sei-sama kindly wads Yumis head. Sachiko tries to call for Yumi, but Yumi refuses to let go out of Seis warm arms. Sachiko sighs in despairs to Sei-sama I am sorry for the trouble and hands Yumis belongings to Sei.

Yumi is still crying in Seis arms, when Sei says that Sachiko is about to leave. Yumi realizes that Sei has Yumis belongings in her hands that Sachiko-sama went into the wet and muddy ground to pick up her belongings. Yumi yells oneesama once again as she runs towards the car carrying Sachiko-sama and Touko-chan. However, the car leaves behind Yumi as if Sachiko had gave up on her. Yumi cries down in further despair as the car leaves

We see a shot of Sei-samaand a glimpse of Katou Kei in the blurry background.

Episode ends with Yumi crying in the rain in the middle of the street.

Misc. Happenings
Several days after Touko gave a strong comment "Yumi-sama, you are not fit to be Sachiko-sama's soeur":

Touko: "So, Yumi-sama, have you thought about what I said?"
Yumi: "Touko-chan, would you like to help around the Yamayurikai for a while?"
Touko: "What the..."
Yumi: "We could definitely use some help since we need a helping hand"
Touko: "Yumi-sama, how in the heck did you jump from my comment to this idea?"

Season 2 Episode 12 Summary

A brief synopsis of what is written in the novel is:

A. Yumiko-san visits Lillian and meets up with Yumi, Touko, and Sei. She gives thanks to Yumi for "making me realize to meet with my beloved friend that I haven't seen in ages...and this time I can really say that 'I'm sorry.' "

B. No mention of who Yumiko's friend is made here - just that she is in grave condition and is currently in a hospice, spending her last days in a peaceful location. Yumiko-san leaves a message to Yumi and Sei to tell Kei that she will be leaving the house for a few days.

C. Flash foward to a certain scene where Sachiko and Yumi resolves their issues and tightens their soeur relationship even stronger after this crisis. Sachiko's maternal grandmother - Ayako just passed away. When Ayako's death was looming near, Ayako began to mutter the name "of a very old friend" and that she wanted to meet her one last time. Once again, never is Ayako's "old friend's" name is ever given.

D. Sachiko, wanting to grant her grandmother's last wish, began franticly searching for her grandmother's lost friend - but when she did and tried to call her house, there was nobody there - it seems that she left her house for a few days. In despair, Sachiko hung up the phone. But when Sachiko looked up, by miracle, her grandmother's old friend was standing right next to her!!

E. In a moment of thought, Yumi thought up of a very elegant lady with a white parasol going off to meet her best friend. Do miracles exist?

Hence, the novel does not note down who the "other friend" is from both Yumiko-san and Ayako-san's perspectives. But it is pretty obvious and noted that they were most likely soeurs.

Season 2 Episode 13 Summary

Finally the last episode of Marimite 2nd season.

Yumi's confrontation with Touko.
Youko's re-appearance.
Explanation of Sachiko's absence.
Love-love scene between Sachiko and Yumi.

Sachiko absence + cancellation reason in novels:

Sachiko told her grandmother a lot of happenings about Yumi when she visited her from time to time. Sachiko's grandmother grew quite fond of Yumi even though she never met her in person and enjoyed listening to Sachiko recounting everything happened between her and Yumi including the date (at the end of the first season). So when Sachiko's grandmother was hospitalized, she asked Sachiko not to tell Yumi about it. Why? She simply didn't want to have Yumi worried about her. And the reason why Sachiko didn't cancel the date to amusement park outright because she actually did want to go with Yumi and to tell her grandmother about the date afterwards to cheer her up in the hospital.

In the novel, Sachiko acted strong, didn't cry, ate very little (if any) and was very weak and thin when Yumi visited her. It was not until Yumi visited her she finally let herself up, had a nice cry and got her appetite back. When Youko saw Sachiko being in that state at the burial ceremony she knew only Yumi can help Sachiko to open up and that was why she came directly from the ceremony to fetch Yumi in order to save Sachiko. There is also the part that Youko left for the convenience store after a (unwilling) short chat with Suguru in the garden because she knew that Sachiko will get her appetite back soon and will want to have something to eat. These are the small details that makes the ending so great, for me at least. Editing out these scenes is like missing out 80% of the emotion.

Ayako-Yumiko part is probably the only part that outdid the novel. Very well done. Some of the conversations between Yumi and Touko were cut and order changed (Yumi's waving hand) which makes it less entertaining as it should have been.

Misc. Happenings
Touko: "That is the aspect that I don't like about you Yumi-sama"
Yumi: "Does that mean you like other aspects of me?"
Touko: "What the..."
Yumi: "aww, come on, don't be shy"
Touko: "er...I'm not going to speak to you anymore"
Yumi: "sniff sniff, I am lonely because Touko-chan isn't going to speak with me"
Touko: "....I give up. What is it Yumi-sama?"

Chapter 1: Suzukaze Satsu-satsu 涼風さつさつ (Refreshing Breeze)

Summary of Happenings
Hosokawa Kanako makes her debut.

1. Kanako is an avid admirer of Yumi

2. ...to the extent of being a stalker

3. Unlike Sachiko who is only unfortable being around men, Kanako despises all men

4. Not much is known why Kanako despises men, but it maybe hinted that it has
something to do with her father with the quote "I refuse to call that man as my
father"

5. Kanako is in the same classroom as Nijou Noriko and Matsudaira Taiko (First
Year, Tsubaki Class)

6. Kanako is also somewhat of a loner

7. Kanako especially does not get along Touko - they are at total opposite ends of
the spectrum

8. Kanako also stalked any men who befriends Yumi (current Hanadera Student Body
members, Kashiwagi Suguru, even Fukuzawa Yuuki)

9. Tsutako-san realizes that among her photos that she took of Yumi, she noticed
the same girl (Kanako) was always near Yumi

10. Tsutako-san sensing something very awkward, gives these photos to Yumi and
tells her to be cautious.

11. Rumors then inflate even further when Kanako and Yumi get into somewhat of an
argument in paying for bread in the cafeteria

12. Touko approaches Yumi to warn her about Kanako...and a subtle quote from Touko,
"She is just selfish, believing that she is the only person in the world with
problems. Yumi-sama, her past involves..." which Yumi cut her off to refuse to
listen as it is an invasion of personal privacy. It is also hinted here that Kanako
is an avid admirer of Yumi, but does not want to be her petit soeur even if chosen

13. Yumi then calls for Kanako to have a one-and-one discussion at the greenhouse
for her actions

14. During the discussion, Kanako gets hysterical that "Yumi-sama is like this rose
- you must be protected in this greenhouse, free from all impurity of the outside
world!! If you go to Hanadera, all men would come after you like hungry wolves to
devour you!!" When Yumi disagrees with Kanako in her portrayal of herself and men,
Kanako gets psychotic to the point "I am deeply upset that even you, Yumi-sama, say
such things!! Well, it is you fault for giving us (meaning Yumi's fans) Yumi-sama's
image at the welcoming ceremony!! It is now your responsibility to keep that
portrayal of purity for our sake!!"

15. Which at the time, Sachiko is at the door of the greenhouse - gives Kanako a
very harsh look and in a deep angry tone of voice "What irresponsible things you
say. You create an image of somewhat that you don't know, you find out that she
wasn't at all like your image, and you go off nudging your responsibility to
others? To be doing something that is one step shy of being a crime? I then say
directly to you: I despise you." -kj1980

Chapter 1: Ready, Go! レディ、GO!

Summary of Happenings
This novel is about the athletics festival, and various Yumi versus Kanako activities.

Yumi and Yoshino are in the same class (and hence same sports team colour), Shimako is in a different class. One of the events for the 2nd years was a ball throwing contest where each colour team designates one person to carry a basket on their back. Everyone else holds these balls (well more like those small beanbag things). Point of the game is throw as many balls as you can into opposing team's baskets. Yumi and Yoshino (green team) were initially aiming to target the red team (Kanako is from the red team, although she obviously wasn't directly involved in this contest since she is a first year. Reason for targeting red team was due to a 'dare' between Yumi and Kanako...) but after seeing Shimako as the designated basket carrier for the purple team Yoshino concludes that the purple team are pulling a cheap trick. She points out to Yumi, that their plan is that no one would be brave enough to throw balls at the current Rosa Gigantea. So in typical Yoshino style (mm i love Yoshino ) she changes her target to the purple team. Once it's over Yumi goes over to Shimako to ask how it was carrying the basket. She replied, "Yoshino-san was scary."

We get to see Shimako's dad in action in the obstacle race. Idea is contestents run and get a piece of paper that says something which they have to find first before heading to the finish line. Can be anything from ppl to objects. In one of the races a contestent picks out Shimako's dad and crosses the line. The title was 'A person wearing traditional Japanese clothes'. As you know Shimako's father owns a temple. A buddhist temple at that. A buddhist monk running around in a Catholic school? Shimako's reaction was quite funny.

During the athletics festival Eriko secretly pressures (taunts in typical Eriko style) Yoshino about not making a soeur yet. And in typical Yoshino style she declares to her that she will make a soeur by the Inter-school Kendo tournament in 2 months time.

Sachiko is introduced to Yumi's parents (quite a funny encounter ), and Yumi breifly meets Sachiko's dad. -Akai

Summary of Happenings
This was an entire book on the second-year class' (Yumi, Yoshino, Shimako, Mami, Tsutako, and the rest) field trip to Italy. While the summary states Yumi, Shimako, and Yoshino are in the same group, the actual story is somewhat different. Yumi, Yoshino, Mami, and Tsutako are always seen together everywhere they go. The class visits various places in Roma, the Vatican, Firenze, and Venetia.

During the trip, they meet up with Kanina Shizuka-sama (she moved to Italy, remember?). And of course, various cliches from "Roman Holiday." (gelato, Spanish Plaza, Bocca della Verita, The Trevi Fountain....). Plus, the group encounters numerous instances where they believe Satou Sei and Katou Kei maybe in Italy as well.

Whilst they tour famous places of Italy they also do a bit of souvenir shopping. And in one of the cathedrals they find some rosary's lined up. As Yumi browses past them Yoshino stares intently at them. When handing Rosary's down they don't necessarily have to be the one you received from your older soeur. Some people buy new ones and some people hand their's down.

Her current one was given to her by Rei and she didn't intend to give it away. Yumi asks later on if she is intending to buy a Rosary for her potential soeur but Yoshino replys, "I decided against it." "Why?" "Because buying a present for someone i don't know is sad, and.." "And?" "I thought I'd have to choose a soeur i will take care of so much, that i wouldn't mind giving her Rei-chan's rosary." -Akai

The second chapter in this book is a very short one - which details how Sachiko (in the Bara no Yakata) and Kanako deals with their beloved person - Yumi, gone for almost a week.

The side story is interesting. Maybe its intention is to remove some of the frictions between Sachiko and Kanako so Kanako and Touko will be on equal ground as Yumi's petite soeur candidate. However, the remark from Sachiko: "Aren't you not wanting to be Yumi's soeur?" and the somewhat affirmative(?) response from Kanako kinda make you think too.

Sachiko is becoming more and more addicted to teasing Yumi, like Sei did. It was quite funny to see her imagining Yumi's response upon seeing the script and cast for the culture festival.

This is more like an anime "mook" ("movie" + "book" = "mook") in which it gives a synopsis of the first season of the anime, anime character designs and concepts, along with interviews with the seiyuus who voiced the students.

The only thing particular that would be considered to be "new stuff" is short story towards the back of the book on how Mizuno Youko chose Ogasawara Sachiko as her soeur. The author, Konno Oyuki, wrote this as a request from Shinohara Emi (seiyuu for Mizuno Youko) and Itou Miki (seiyuu for Ogasawara Sachiko) since they wanted to know how they became soeurs.

Tokubetsu denai Tada no Ichinichi

Volume 19
195 Pages
440 Yen
ISBN: 4086004844
(2004/10/01)

In "Tokubetsu de nai Tada no Ichinichi" ("Not Special, But A Regular Day") we finally get to the Culture Festival once again.

Hanadera members get some of the attention as they come to help out the Yamayurikai in getting "Torikaebaya Monogatari" act together.

An added twist is set for Yamayurikai's version of "Torikaebaya"

1. Touko-chan, while she may not admit it, seems to be fond of Yumi-sama
2. Yuuki thinks Touko-chan is rather cute
3. Touko-chan indirectly gives advice to Yumi-sama whenever she can
4. Touko: Thats the part that I hate about you, Yumi-sama!
Yumi (acting like Sei-sama): I am so sad that Touko-chan doesnt want to play with me, sniff sniff
Touko: err. [blushes]
5. Kanako-chan is an avid admirer of Yumi-sama
6. Yumi asks Kanako-chan to help out the Yamayurikai in preparation for Lillians Culture Festival
7. In exchange, Kanako-chan wants a picture taken of her and Yumi-sama together
8. Yumi brings back gifts for both Kanako-chan and Touko-chan from her class field trip to Italy
9. There is one scene where Kanako-chan and Sachiko-sama are alone in the Yamayurikai in which a short but somewhat meaningful dialogue is exchanged in which Kanako-chan says If Yumi-sama asks me to be her petit soeur, I will not accept
10. Yumi-sama is very popular with the first year studentsTouko-chan and Kanako-chan must be envied for being so close to Yumi-sama
11. Yumi acts as a catalyst in helping Touko-chan reconcile with her drama club
12. Yumi acts as a catalyst in helping Kanako-chan reconcile with her father
13. Touko [pouting]: Yumi-sama, you were late in coming to see my play!
14. Yumi and Touko-chan go for a short date so Touko-chan can show Yumi-sama what the first year classes are doing for their Culture Festival.
15. Yumi picks out Touko-chans juzu-rio (Buddhist juzu beads + Christian rosario = juzu-rio).
16. Cute scene where when Yumi picks a juzu-rio obviously made by Touko-chan, Touko-chan gets angryAnd when Yumi puts that one aside and reaches for someone elses juzu-rio, Touko-chan starts pouting.

Hmm...once again there were two places in this novel that might hint(?) a relationship between Yuuki and Yoshino.

Yumi gets to look after both Touko-chan and Kanako-chan throughout this novel. In many ways, this novel reinforces that they are the top two candidates for Yumi's soeur....

Several cameos indeed make an appearance at this Culture Festival - including Shimako's father, Shimura Takuya, Kashiwagi Suguru (eleven tickets!?) and of course, Mizuno Youko and Satou Sei!

Kanako's "secret" on why she despises men and her father is revealed. Introduction of Hosokawa Yuuko and Hosokawa Chikako.

The last sentences in this novel:

After spending few moments holding Yumi in her arms, Sachiko-sama gently released and looked straight in Yumi's face

"Yumi" said Sachiko
"It is time for you to find a soeur"

"What..."

Sachiko said that today was "Not Special, But a Regular Day," but on this anniversary date of their soeur relationship, she imposed Yumi with a very important task.

Several new things to be noted about Yumi:

A. Yumi's fanbase in Hanadera is actually growing for some reason - large enough that a Battle Royale exists at Hanadera to pounce Yuuki to get the Culture Festival ticket with Yumi's name stamped on it (somehow, I take it this is Konno Oyuki's sarcasm on the extreme male otaku fanbase towards Marimite)

B. Yumi is largely popular with Lillian's first year students as well.

C. Quoting Yoshino, "You should leave it like that. Even just a moment ago, a Hanadera student came over to ask when Yumi-san has a break. I asked him why, and he replied that he wanted Yumi-san to show around Lillian. I don't know why, but Yumi-san, you are very popular with Hanadera and our first year students. [So take my advice,] don't go around saying that you are free after lunch. If you respond each one faithfully, you won't end up having any free time with Sachiko-sama."

The short story "Joanna" is about Touko. It reveals the reason why Touko quit the play that her club prepared for the culture festival. The story was told from Touko's prospective so you can see what's on Touko's mind at that time.

Summary of Chapter 1 (Source)

The story takes place just a few days after Lillian's Culture Festival. Yumi was handed down a tough assignment from her beloved Sachiko-sama to "go find your petite soeur." In addition to the excitement from the Culture Festival, this huge task left Yumi having a tough time getting to go to sleep every night.

The Yamayurikai was just going over their post-Culture Festival meeting when the discussion suddenly turned to the attention of when Yoshino and Yumi will find their petite soeur. Yoshino, of course, is quite sensitive to this subject due to a deal she made with the previous Rosa Foetida (Torii Eriko) and the deadline is looming over the horizon. Yumi, on the other hand, also became sensitive because she was recently handed down this assignment from Sachiko-sama just a few days ago.

Quoting from the novel:

"Why does everyone think that Kanako-chan and Touko-chan are the obvious candidates for Yumi's soeur? Yumi has never appointed neither of them as her candidate, nor had they come up to Yumi to declare their candidacy."

Hmm...is this Ms. Konno's way of asserting to us readers with some sort of sarcasm?

Yumi begins to ponder how she should find her petite soeur.

"Maybe if I barge out from this room right now, there will be a first year student that just happened to be on the other side of the door..."

"...or maybe shall I go to the St. Mary Statue among the ginkgo trees and fix the tie of a first year student...?"

The deadline Eriko set was closing and a panicking Yoshino mentions an outrageous idea. To decide her Petite Soeur by having a public audition. Naturally Yumi and Shimako disapprove of the idea, so instead the first and second years gather for some tea, but...!?

Partial Translation (by kj1980)

"It has come to a point now where we need to hold an audition!" says Yoshino abruptly.

Yoshino, in desperation to find a petit soeur as the deadline looms directly ahead, has gone to rash measures to find herself a soeur.

Yumi, who is also under pressure from Sachiko-sama to find a her own petit soeur became dragged into Yoshino's plot. With Sachiko-sama agreeing and supporting Yoshino's idea, Yumi had no choice but to go along with the audition plans. A funny parody scene from the first volume where it is now Yumi's turn to say "Oubou-desuwa, onee-sama no ijiwaru!" (Sachiko-sama said that to Youko-sama) and turning to the door. Dj Vu happens when as Yumi tries to open the door, the door opens. But it turns out to be a false alarm as Yumi lands into Rei.

Rei at first disapproved Yoshino's idea, but sensing (in a wrong way) that Yoshino is doing it for her beloved Eriko-sama, she also approved Yoshino's plans to go ahead with an audition.

As plans move ahead, Yumi felt that holding an audition was going to extremities. After a discussion session with Yumi, Yoshino, and Shimako, it became decided to tone down the "audition." A consensus was reached that the Yamayurikai would invite prospective second-year and first-year students who have no soeurs to an hour-and-a-half long "tea session" where they would get together. The purpose was to provide a gathering place for people that have no soeurs so that they have a chance to get to know each other. Hopefully, that meeting may evolve into a soeur relationship. Of course, Yumi and Yoshino will be eligible members as second-year students with no soeurs.

Eligibility requirements to join this tea session (Both requirements are to avoid having the Yellow Rose Revolution "divorce" thing happening again):

A. Second year students that may or may not have a grande soeur, but does not have a petite soeur yet.

or

B. First year students that do not have a grande soeur yet.

Utilizing the help of the Lillian Newspaper (Yamaguchi Mami), the word began to spread about this tea session. Since this was a good chance to have the prospective Roses to handle their own events by themselves, Sachiko and Rei stayed out of this tea session.

Cut scene to Noriko's classroom. All the first year students were in talk about this tea session. Yet at the same time, Noriko felt a certain uneasiness as she began to feel an aura of queerness that was aimed at Touko-chan. "Noriko-san, do you know if Touko-san is going to be joining the tea session?" "Do you know any details of Yumi-sama choosing either Touko-san or Kanako-san?" Questions such as those began to irritate Noriko..."I'm sorry, but maybe those questions should be asked to Touko-san directly."

What Noriko-chan has felt is not far from what was happening. Yumi is very popular with the first year students. Yumi, to them, was an idol - a commoner amongst the bright and sunny spectacle of the Yamayurikai. To them, Yumi was a person that the first year students can feel a certain rapport, yet at the same time source of respect (My analogy: the same kind of idolism given to Grace Kelly when she wed Prince Rainier III of Monaco).

Hence, to them, Touko-chan is a scapegoat of jealousy. They see Touko-chan is somewhat a cause of Yumi-Sachiko soeur crisis earlier in the year. But then again, the see Touko-chan being close to the Yamayurikai where she (along with Kanako-chan) helping out in Yamayurikai sponsored events. They see their beloved Yumi-sama coming to see Touko-chan. Yumi gives Touko-chan a gift from her class trip to Italy. Yumi helps out in resolving Touko-chan's quarrel with the drama club. Yumi chooses Touko-chan's juzurio. Yumi goes out on a date with Touko-chan during the Gakuensai. Why Touko-chan!? It is somewhat apparent (and a foreshadowing of things to come) that some first year students are talking behind Touko-chan's back.

Touko seems to know what is going on, but pretends not to give a damn. Noriko tries to help, but Touko claims that "I do not need any assistance in resolving this Yumi-sama issue." But as a friend, Noriko knows that Touko needs someone at her side...

Not many people seem to be applying for the tea session as Yumi and Yoshino expected. "Perhaps the eligibility requirements were too harsh?" thought Yumi and Yoshino. Yet the application forms in the Yamayurikai lobby seem to be disappearing like hotcakes. Mami then explained that the Lillian Newspaper was throwing out forms that weren't applications. Many of the application form that was sent came out to be weird questions such as:

"Is there are reason that second-year students need to apply? I believe more first-year students should be eligible" (Obvious that first year students want to become either Yoshino or Yumi's soeur and could careless about other second year students)

"Are you sure that Yumi-sama is free? Hasn't she already have someone [cough]Touko-chan[/cough] in mind?"

etc. etc....

Sighing, Yumi and Yoshino agreed to wait a couple a more days until all applications have been processed.

Mami: "Here's today's forms. Let's sift through the acceptable ones"

Yoshino: "Let's see...here's one with no name with a note on a back...'Touko-san should be disqualified as she's only out to become Yumi-sama's soeur to usurp Sachiko-sama' WTF...?"

Yumi: "Oh how about this one? 'I really want to join the Yamayurikai. I don't mind being the soeur of either Yumi-sama or Yoshino-sama.' Simple and straight-foward. I wonder who she is... First Year Kiku-Gumi, Naitou Shouko. Do you know her?"

Yoshino: "Naitou...Naitou... is she somehow related to Naitou Katsumi? She was a rival against Torii Eriko-sama. Oh I get it, she wants to join the Yamayurikai for her sister's revenge against the Yellow Roses!"

Kanako-chan then officially comes to visit Yumi. She gives Yumi-sama her strictest yet cheerful intentions of not applying nor becoming Yumi's soeur - that she is very happy with her new mother Yuuko-san. Kanako-chan joined the basketball club adn explains how she cross-imaged Yumi with Yuuko-san, that she didn't want to Yumi to become rotten. In the end, Yumi fulfilled Kanako-chan wishes by taking a picture with her. It can be said that officially, Kanako-chan has dropped out of Yumi's soeur candidacy, yet at the same time we will probably see Kanako-chan becoming a great friend.

When the day of the tea session arrived, Mami-san explained that Tsutako-san has something urgent to do so she couldn't be here to take pictures. She said that "I didn't even apply so it'll be weird for me to be there. Besides, it'll be odd for a person with a camera inside when it could be a meeting place for something interesting to happen. If you need me, I'll be at the clubhouse." Oh well, Yoshino will be the photographer for today.

In the end, fifteen first year students and ten second year students applied. Since the cap was to be twenty for each year, everyone that applied was given the invitation. Suddenly, Mami-san brought a blank badge and a marker, started scribbling her name and her first year Lillian newspaper partner - Takachi Hidemi. "Hey it's odd to be journalists in a place like this. We qualify as well, so here our badges!" Hidemi, on the other hand, is in a shock.

As badges are handed out, Yumi notices a first year student looking around for something. She being the last one there with only one badge left, Yumi finds that she is Naitou Shouko.

Yumi: "Are you looking for something, Shouko-chan?" (hmm...her face looks familiar)
Shouko: "Ah...no...Well, I was wondering if there was a person with a camera here...but"
Yumi: "Camera?"
Shouko: "Oh, no. It's nothing really. Never mind."

Being led upstairs, the prospective soeurs to-be started their tea-session. As expected, Yumi was crowded with three first year students. "Yumi-sama, what type of girl do you like?" etc. etc....

Naitou Shouko, on the other hand, was very polite and sat quietly answering questions from Mami-san. Yoshino saw that Yumi wanted to go talk to Shouko-chan. Yoshino lent Yumi a helping hand to have her excused from the crowd.

Yumi: "Shouko-chan, am I right?"
Shouko: "Yes, Yumi-sama"
Yumi: "You were very straight-foward in your application"
Shouko: "It may have been a little too straight-foward. I understand"
Yumi: "Why do you want to join the Yamayurikai?"
Shouko: "The Yamayurikai was something special to me since I was in middle school. Remember last year, the Yamayurikai hosted the Valentine's Day event? I participated in that."(read: "Chocolat & Portrait")
Yumi: "So you snuck in [laughs]"
Shouko: "And it was interesting to see a future bara-sama running around the hallways trying to fend off the followers."
Yumi: "er...please forget about that and erase that from your memory..."
Shouko: "And ever since then, the photos that I see of Yamayurikai, whether it be the freshman orientation, to sports day events, the Hanadera School Festival, and the stage play that the Yamayurikai hosted for our School Festival, all those photos shine with cheerfulness and glamor. I sincerely wished to be a part of that team so hopefully I can shine in photos like that..."
Yumi: "Well, the Yamayurikai is not all glamor and shine. There is a lot of hard work that gets involved in that, so I don't see that your reason is sufficient enough to become a member..."
Shouko: "So in a way, you are indirectly saying that you are turning me down. I think Yoshino-san might feel the same way too."
Yumi: "Technically, yes. But I sincerely hope that you find someone that you really may or may not have in mind. I will cheer for you when you do."
Shouko: "It's fine. It has been a pleasure and I will enjoy my time here."

As time progresses, Yumi gives a errand to Shouko-chan.

Yumi: "Do you have several minutes to help me out? We're going to be taking a photo shoot, so we are going to need a photostand. I forgot that in the clubhouse. Can you help us?"
Shouko: [sense a little weirdness but seeing no reason to decline] "Sure. No problem, Yumi-sama."
Yumi: "It's a marble photostand. It should be very easy to find. But if you can't find it, that's okay. Just return here by 3:30. You might want to hurry though."
Shouko: "But there is still a time...are you sure it is easy to find?"

Shouko-chan leaves the tea session and heads to the clubhouse. As she enters the room, she sees someone inside...

Shouko: "Ts...Tsutako-sama?"
Tsutako: "S...Shouko? What are you doing here? I thought you were at the tea session."
Shouko: "I...I came here on an errand by Yumi-sama to get a photostand..."
Tsutako: "Huh? Why would Yumi-san leave a photostand in the clubhouse? .....Darn it! I got one pulled by Yumi-san! [laughs]"
Shouko: "???"
Tsutako: "Yumi-san knew I was going to be here, so she sent you over to me."
Shouko: "Why would Yumi-san do something like that?"
Tsutako: "The reason? Hmm...probably this. Here, open it."
Shouko: [unwraps and sees a marble photostand with her and her sister's picture in it]. "wha...wait...this can't be me. I'm not that beautiful" (read: "Chocolat & Portrait")
Tsutako: "No, your smile was shining that time. I tried to give it to you the day after it was processed but I couldn't find you anywhere. I showed this picture to Yumi-san at the time to see if she knew you, but she didn't. Then, when you came in on your first day of school at Lillian High, I was shocked. I wanted to give this to you, but..."

Yumi instinctively found out that Shouko kept on stressing "camera" and "photos," and probably came to a judgment that Shouko wanted to join the Yamayurikai only to be close to one of Yumi's closest friends - Takeshima Tsutako-san. At the same time, Yumi also recalled Tsutako-san buying a special marble photostand when they were on their class trip in Italy for the photograph she took back in her first year about the Valentine's Day event.

In the end, Shouko will join the Photo Club as an apprentice for Tsutako-san....and as Yumi will say to Sachiko-sama "they aren't soeurs yet, but I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time."

The tea session went along quite well as two couples became soeurs that day. Unfortunately, netiher Yoshino nor Yumi was able to find a suitable soeur. Three pre-candidates for Yumi, and two pre-candidates for Yoshino failed:

Candidate A (Yumi): Came in late to help the Yamayurikai
Candidate B (Yoshino): "You're fired!"
Candidate C (Yumi): Brought four of her friends to the Yamayurikai, drank tea, sat there chatting, and left
Candidate D (Yoshino): cried and left the room when Yoshino tried to warn her about a mistake that she made
Candidate E (Yumi): never showed up.

Noriko: "I believe they were all living in a dream"
Yumi: "Dream?"
Noriko: "Yes, like The Roses or The boutons. They has their idolism intact, and they wished to become closer to the dream - that being close to you (Yumi-sama and Yoshino-sama) will open doors of shine and glamour. But in reality, that is more than far from the truth."
Yumi: "You mean they were disappointed?"
Norika: "Or more likely that they realized that everything was a dream. All this time, they believed that the Bara no Yakata was a house of aura. They never for once thought that they be placed within that compounds. Yet, when the reality struck, the became shocked. Maybe it was better for them being an invited guest at the tea session."

And, the day has come - the women's kendo tournament, and Yoshino's D-Day deadline where Eriko-sama comes to see Yoshino's petite soeur.

Sachiko and Yumi, Shimako and Noriko all came to see Rei's performance in the tournament. Yoshino was already in the field as a member of Lillian's kendo team (of course, she doesn't play in the tournament, but since she is a member, she gets to be on the support team).

Then appears Sei, Youko, and Eriko. Eriko brought Sei and Youko to the tournament hinting that "something interesting was about to happen." Eriko starts projecting Yumi with questions such as "so, who is Yoshino's soeur?" "What kind of girl is she?" etc. etc. But, Yumi has grown up a little bit since she last saw Eriko-sama...Yumi has gotten a tad bit clever in avoiding responses that blurts out inconsistencies.

Final round, Lillian versus Oonaka Joshi (Oonaka Girl's High). Oonaka Joshi was the school that Lillian defeated last year. This year, Rei is up against the same school in the final round, once again against a Tanaka.

"Is it better to be on the school which lost the battle and won the war, or who won the battle but lost the war?"

Lillian lost. Lillian lost the senpo, jihou, and fukushou matches while managed to win chuuken and Rei won the shushou match. Either way, three-to-two, Lillian lost.

Just as Yoshino was about to say something to cheer Rei, she sees Eriko coming. Yoshino dashes out of the arena and into the hallway to avoid Eriko. But Eriko managed to take a shortcut...

Eriko: "Yoshino-chan!"
Yoshino: "E...Eriko-sama. Gokigenyou"
Eriko: "What are you in a hurry about?"
Yoshino: "Umm...."
Eriko: "Oh, excuse me. You must've wanted to go to the restroom."
Yoshino: "Uh, yeah. That's right."
Eriko: "Of course. It would be silly of me to think that you were running away from me because you couldn't find a soeur, right? You're not that kind of girl are you, Yoshino-chan?"
Yoshino: "Why, Eriko-sama. I can't believe you would think of me like that."
Eriko: "So you do have a soeur?"
Yoshino: "O...Of course."
Eriko: "So did you buy the rosario during the school trip to Italy?"
Yoshino: "Huh? Uh...no"
Eriko: "Oh, so you are going to give the rosario that Rei has given you?"
Yoshino: "Uh...yeah."
Eriko: "Well, that's odd...Isn't that the rosario you have around your neck?"
Yoshino: "Uh...yes it is. Actually, I was planning to give her the rosario right in front of you, Eriko-sama."
Eriko: "Why that is really thoughtful of you. So where is this soeur of yours?"
Yoshino: "Uh...yeah....my soeur is....in the restroom."
Eriko: "The restroom?"
Yoshino: "Yes. I wanted to show you my soeur ASAP, but she seems to be running a little late since she left for the restroom and that's why I came here to look for her. Gee, maybe she might be lost....you have to excuse me!!!"

and Yoshino makes a mad dash towards the women's restroom.

As Yoshino turns left into the women's restroom, she almosts hits a girl who pops out from the exit. The girl avoid getting hit by Yoshino by swaying to the side with her quick reflexes. Yoshino on the other hand, falls down.

"Are you okay?" says the girl. "....what a beautiful rosario."
Yoshino, looks up at her and ponders, "where have I seen her before...?"

"Oh I'm sorry, this must be yours." As the girl gives back the rosario and as Yoshino reaches her hand to receive it, Eriko pops out: (Illustration)

Eriko: "....is she, your...?"
Yoshino: "uhh....yeah..."

Yoshino sees that this girl is wearing a pink sweater, but has Lillian's school skirt underneath.

Yoshino: [whispering to the girl] "Just follow my lead..."
Yoshino: "Eriko-sama, let me introduce you to her. She is my special person who I wish to choose as my petite soeur"
Eriko: "Really..."
Girl: "My name is Arima Nana. It is a pleasure to meet you."
Eriko: "Nana-chan. Ok. I shall remember your name."

feeling a sigh of relief, Yoshino was about to escort herself and Nana-chan away from Eriko...

Eriko: "Wait a minute. Didn't you say you were to do the soeur rite in front of me?"
Yoshino: "Uh...yes. But not today. Today is just to introduce you to her."
Eriko: "Why? I'm here, so why can't you do it today?"
Yoshino: "Uh...well...there are a lot of issues at hand right now..."
Eriko: "Issues?"
Nana: "I'm sorry. There is my own personal issues at stake here so today is not a good time for me to accept this rosario right now."
Eriko: "What kind of issues? I'm eager to know."
Nana: "Lot's of things."
Eriko: "Lot's of things....hmm. Okay. Accepted."
Eriko: "By the way, Yoshino-chan. Whatever happened to the first year student that you told me that you hand in mind during the sports' festival?"
Yoshino: "Huh?"
Eriko: "That's okay. This seems to be more interesting to me. I'd better get going. Sei and Youko should be tired of waiting for me. Gokigenyou, Yoshino-chan. Since you did show me your soeur (to-be), I'll leave you alone for a while"
Yoshino: "Oh, don't say that. Please come visit us more often" ("Please don't come back ever again")
Eriko: "....oh, by the way....Nana-chan?"
Nana: "Yes?"
Eriko: "Take care of how you dress. Tuck up your clothes underneath your sweater."

Whew what a relief, sighed Yoshino.

Yoshino: "Thank you. You are a life saver"
Nana: "I wouldn't say so. She probably figured me out."
Yoshino: "About what?"
Nana: "That I am not eligible"
Yoshino: "Not eligible?" (What the heck is this girl saying?)
Nana: "Wearing a Lillian's uniform is revealing, so I wore a sweater above my uniform. But, I didn't realize that my ribbon knot had become untied."

As Nana took off her sweater and showed Yoshino her uniform...

Yoshino: "You...you are..."

Nana is wearing a uniform that is very similar to Yoshino's school uniform...except for that one ribbon part that you tie above your chest.

Yoshino: "You are a Middle School student!?"

Lillian's Middle School and High School uniform is very similar...except for the part where the collar ribbon (read: "Chocolat & Portrait") Lillian's High School uniform has the collar itself becoming the ribbon, whereas the Middle School has the black line on the collar extended to become the ribbon.

Nana: "Yes. I am in the third year."

"Aaah!" Wails Yoshino.

Nana: "Well, it was nice meeting you, the petite soeur of Hasekura Rei-sama."

Before she left, Nana turned once again with a serious look, "Is your petite soeur going to be given that rosario?"

Yoshino: "eh?"

But before Yoshino could answer, Nana has already left for the exit. If she would've waited until I answered, what would've I have said? Why is my heart beating so fast? Yoshino felt a certain jolt in her heart she hasn't felt since she was about to undergo heart surgery....

Yumi: "Yoshino-san!"
Yoshino: "What!? Huh? What are you doing here?"
Yumi: "Eriko-sama told me that you were standing here dazed so I came to pick you up. What wrong? I came right in front of you and yet you still didn't seem to notice me."
Yoshino: "....un"
Yumi: "So, how did it go? Did Eriko-sama accept your apology?"
Yoshino: "What apology? I introduced to her."
Yumi: "What?! Who?!"
Yoshino: "Arima Nana"
Yumi: "Huh?"
Yoshino: "A girl named Arima Nana"
Yumi: "Since when....I had no idea"
Yoshino: "Of course you don't. I just met her"
Yumi: "uh...."
Yoshino: "That's for me to find out from now what kind a girl she is"
Yumi: "Yoshino-san, what's gotten into to you?"
Yoshino: "I don't know...but I can say one thing. I want you, Yumi-san, to quickly find your own soeur."
Yumi: "Huh? Why is that?"
Yoshino: "Because things might happen that can be strenous to Noriko-chan"

With that in mind, Yoshino had an image of future self being crossed with Sei-sama.

What Yoshino is indirectly implying is:

A. There is a likelihood that Yoshino might hold off choosing a soeur until she is in the third year, so that Nana-chan can come in as a first year student to Lillian High, and choose her as petite soeur (just like third year Sei chose first year Shimako)

and

B. Possible scenario for third year if Yumi doesn't find a soeur:

Sachiko and Rei graduates
Yumi - Rosa Chinensis
Yoshino - Rosa Foetida
Shimako - continues as Rosa Gigantea
Noriko - Rosa Gigantea en bouton

Only four members of Yamayurikai at the beginning of the year, and only one bouton (Noriko) to carry out assistance for Yamayurikai activities. Poor, Noriko-chan. If Yumi would find a Rosa Chinensis en bouton, at least Noriko-chan will have an extra hand.

Yoshino: "There really are a lot of issues that I have to deal with that girl"
Yoshino: "Listen carefully, Yumi-san. Arima Nana is a sister of Tanaka-san."
Yumi: "Tanaka-san? Which Tanaka-san of which classroom?"
Yoshino: "Classroom? No, no. It's not Lillian. It's Oonaka Joshi. She's the youngest sister of the Four Tanaka Sisters. I thought I saw her face somewher, it was in the newspaper scrapbook that Rei-chan showed to me."

Yumi, bewildered at what Yoshino-san is saying had a hard time catching up what she was saying. Four Tanaka Sisters? Oonaka Joshi? Utilizing her "normal" brain at full speed, Yumi was able to make out that the girl whom Yoshino-san introduced to Eriko-sama is a girl named Arima Nana-chan. Nana-chan is the youngest sister of the Tanaka (who seems to be four sisters), who fought against Rei-sama in the final rounds of the kendo tournament.

Yumi: "But her family name is Arima"
Yoshino: "Exactly. That's what I am trying to say! I've been duped!"
Yumi: "So her full name is Tanaka Arima-Nana?"
Yoshino: "Tanaka as the family name and Arima-Nana as her given name. That'll be interesting. No seriously. Her maternal grandfather has the family name Arima. She was adopted into her maternal grandfather's family so she took on the name Arima. However, three generations live in that household, so they all live together as the Tanaka sisters. The only thing different is her family name as being an Arima and that she chose to go to Lillian as her grandfather's wishes."
Yumi: "Wow. It's only been two days and you already investigated that much?"
Yoshino: " 'Wow.' Is that all you can say? Do you know what this means?"
Yumi: "Unfortunately, I don't"
Yoshino: "Listen. Nana's grandfather owns a biiiiiig kendo doujo that is nth times larger than Hasekura's, and they have nth times as much more students. Her grandfather has many grandchildren to choose to adopt into his family, but he chose the youngest of all the sisters - Nana to carry on the Arima name. Do you know what that means? It can be hypothesized that Nana has exceptional kendo skills that outshine all her elder sisters, and that she was the chosen one. Are you following?"
Yumi: "So? You don't want a soeur that is stronger than you?
Then why don't you quit in choosing her?
Yoshino: "...."
Yumi: "Besides, she's two years younger than you. Why choose a girl like that? Rei-sama can't cuddle her soeur's petite soeur after she graduates."
Yoshino: "She's not going to be Rei-chan's petite soeur!!"
Yumi: "See? You know you have thoughts for Nana-chan."
Yoshino: "You tricked me right there didn't you, Yumi-san"
Yumi: "Yes I did"
Yoshino: "Well...it's more like I am interested about her...but...Alright. I'll say it. If I, Yoshino, should not find a soeur by the time I am in the third year, I will choose Arima Nana as my petite soeur."

Yumi: "....So that's how the story went, Sachiko-sama."
Sachiko: "I see. And how about you?"
Yumi: "Well...I see that I have to start getting serious about this."

As Sachiko and Yumi discussed, they saw Tsutako-san and Shouko-chan walking side by side. Their soeur relationship might be just over the horizon.

Also, Yumi reported that there was another soeur couple born from the tea session - Mami-san and Hidemi-chan. For one, they were already in the same Lillian Newspaper club, and two, when they simulated themselves as being soeurs in at the tea session, they found that they were perfect for each other.

"Onee-sama," Yumi began to express what she felt right now to Sachiko-sama
"I am really glad that we were able to do the tea session. Although I couldn't find myself a suitable soeur, it made me think more carefully about choosing my own petite soeur."

"Oh, how so?" (Sachiko)

"That there is nothing to think too hard about. All there is to it is that so long as you both know that you love for each other, you are meant to be together."

Sachiko-sama quietly nodded, "that's right" as we walked together. "It is very simple, but at the same time that is the most difficult part, yet it is also the most important part as well."

Will Yumi find a soeur that matches the closeness between Sachiko and Yumi?

THE END

Summary

It seems like Eriko attended the audition, and Yoshino couldn't find a suitable soeur. Yoshino bumps into some girl by chance, getting her rosary into her hands by accident, and Eriko misinterprets the gesture.

Yoshino doesn't try to correct Eriko's mistaken assumption, and claims a girl she has never met before as her new soeur!

Her name is Arima Nana.

Her three elder sisters go to Oonaka Girl's High, and they are known (and feared) as a top competitors in women's kendo. Basically, Oonaka Girl's High is Lilian's rival. Her sister's family name is Tanaka.

However, Arima Nana is the youngest sister of the Tanaka sisters, and was adopted into her grandfather's family, hence her family name is Arima. And lo and behold Arima Nana is a third year student in Lillian Middle School.

But of course, since Arima is in middle school and Yoshino in second year of high school, no soeur relationship has been made....except Yoshino did feel a certain "jolt" through her heart when she met Nana, and made the shocking remark "If I do not have a petite soeur by the time I am in the third year, I will choose Arima Nana as my petite soeur." -kj1980

By the way, neither Yumi nor Yoshino did make soeurs, but several important things did happen:

A. Hosokawa Kanako drops out from the candidacy (a rather great way too! I sincerely see that Kanako and Yumi having a great friendship)

B. Matsudaira Touko did not even enter

C. Naitou Shouko and Takeshima Tsutako are having a budding relationship

D. Yamaguchi Mami and Takachi Hidemi (new character, first year student of Lillian School Newspaper) has become soeurs.

Chapter 1: Rosa Foetida Panic

yellow rose - Rei goes out with a boy! Yoshino drags Nana along to spy on Rei-chan. Yoshino and Arima Nana run riot...Nana seems an interesting girl, she took the initiative where Yoshino paused...now that's quite something...

Nana eventually takes over Yoshino's lead which makes it very interesting how these two will eventually turn out.

beginning of part 1:

Just as they were about to exit the school gate, there was a loud shout from the side.

"Shimako!"

Shimako-san as well as lower year Noriko whose name was not called, however with Shimako-san looked over their shoulder at the same time.

And the source of the loud voice was known.

A person wearing a white apron and triangle bandage with sunglasses, mismatched fashion.

Chapter 2: Rosa Gigantea's monoomoi (translated as either reverie/meditation/anxiety)

In Rosa Gigantea's chapter, there is another title: heiwa na futari (a peaceful couple)

white rose - Shimako's older brother makes an appearance, Noriko and Sei make first contact...else it's quite peaceful being white.

*After Shimako bro takes Shimako away...

"I think its okay.

She heard a voice from behind her.

How can you be sure?

Noriko turned around. A woman with a clear-cut face stood there.

I know who that man is.

Leather jacket and jeans. University books peering out of a large shoulder bag. A student of Lillian Girls University.

Do you want me to tell you?

Even though she did turn around once, Noriko showed her back to this woman of suggestive attitude and walked off.

Its alright. Shimako-san will call me tonight.

The university student didnt come after her.

Trying very hard. Then until this phone call comes youre going to spend the evening agonising over it. Poor thing.

Shimako wont get angry even if you ask who that man is.

It was like she lost but Noriko turned around. No, she actually did lose.

Seeing Noriko coming back, the university student patted her on the head much like the owner of a dog who caught a frisbee and came back would.

One thing, Im sorry but could we move somewhere else?

Noriko suggested.

Huh?

A place where there arent that many people.

Wow, are you asking for it?

No I am not. Shimako-san made an effort not to cause trouble. So there would be no use if we stood out instead.

Escalating from the initial patting of the head, she then rubbed her shoulders and arms, and is currently in the state of hugging her from behind.

The high school students coming out of the gate were looking this way and whispering to each other.

Fair enough.

The university student let go temporarily and walked off telling her to follow.

*snip*

The place Noriko was brought to by the university student was the university cafeteria.

She placed a hot coffee on the table, sat next to Noriko, poked her finger in Norikos ear and said disappointingly after Noriko made no reaction,

Are you s*xually frigid?

Quite a greeting. Leaving whether I was se*ually frigid to one side, Noriko confirmed something.

Youre Satou Sei-sama.

How did you know?

The university student, no, Satou Sei-sama bent back so much that anyone would say shes overacting too much.

Its not that hard to figure out.

*snip*snip*

*They talk about how the guy is Shimakos bro

Theyre not very similar.

No theyre not.

Sei-sama took a sip out of Norikos coffee even though there was some left in her own cup and said,

They should be blood-related though.

Chapter 3: Rosa Chinesis's Sigh

red rose - Yumi and Sachiko 2nd date, to the amusement park! Kashiwagi Suguru plays an important role and the seriousness of the story steps up a gear...

Volume Summary

"Post-exam break. At home, Yumi receives a call from Kashiwagi. Touko has apparently fled her house! Surprisingly after this, Yuuki brings Touko to their house. Without being able to ask what happened, Touko goes home. Last day before chistmas break, Nana's comes to the Yamayurikai christmas party!?"

Translation (kj1980)

Kashiwagi Suguru calls Yumi's house that Touko has ran away from home.
Yuuki brings Touko to the Fukuzawa household when he found her wandering near her neighborhood.
Touko become the first person to come into Yumi's room (not even Sachiko-sama has ever been into Yumi's room)
Touko seems to have something bothering in her mind.
Touko eats dinner at the Fukuzawa household.
Yumi senses something different with Touko - a sense of wanting to be closer to her.

On this year's Yamayurikai's Christmas Party, the invited members include: Sachiko-sama, Yumi, Touko-chan, Kanako-chan, Rei-sama, Yoshino, Arima Nana (Yoshino's soeur candidate), Shimako, Noriko-chan, and Tsutako-san.
Yoshino wants to surprise everyone by bringing Nana-chan (a 3rd year Lillian Middle School student) as a highly potential soeur candidate.
But with Nana alone, that might be a little worrisome so Yoshino asks if Yumi can bring Touko-chan and Kanako-chan as well, as they were a big help to the Yamayurikai.
At the Christmas Party, several things are known such as:
Rei will not be going to Lillian University, which pisses Yoshino off. But in the end, it was Rei's decision to "move on from being over-protective of Yoshino" and they both reconcile.
While on the other hand Sachiko will go to Lillian University, which pleases Yumi a lot.

In the end, Touko-chan leaves the Christmas Party with Yumi chasing after her.
Touko-chan talks with Yumi about how her future is uncertain, that the world is not as easy as she saw it was when she was a child, certain problems that we (the readers) do not know about. Hence the title "Mirai no Hakuchizu" = "The Blank Map of The Future"

I cannot leave her behind, yet she is walking further and further away.
What should I do?
I thought that I can almost feel her inside me. But Touko-chan is now walking away with the problems that she has put inside herself deeply.
How can I grasp her?
How--?

"Touko-chan!" yells Yumi.

Touko-chan turns around and looks back.
The two faces each other in front of the Statue of St. Mary.

Yumi suddenly says, "Touko-chan, will you become my petit soeur? (scan)

It was the only answer that Yumi could think about at that moment.
"....huh?" replied Touko-chan after five seconds of confusion.
"...or am I not suitable for you?" shouted Yumi

Am I too weak to help Touko-chan when she needs help?

"Yumi-sama..."

Yumi walks over to Touko-chan, who is still standing with her eyes wide open.
Yumi remembers about the tradition and removes her rosario from her neck - the one that Sachiko-sama gave to Yumi a year and two months ago.
That was when Touko-chan's lips angled upward

"Why thank you so much Yumi-sama, you are so kind"

"....what?"

"Did you really think I was going to say that?"

Yumi froze there as she held the rosario's necklance in the shape of a circle.
Touko-chan is smiling. But her smile is not of happiness. Many raging and dark emotions are welling inside of her right now which she is containing behind that smile.

Touko-chan misthought that Yumi-sama felt sorry for her.
Whereas, Yumi finally realized that Touko-chan was the one that she chose from the bottom of her heart.
Sachiko-sama and Yumi exchanges their Christmas gifts.
Sachiko-sama realizes something wrong with Yumi.

"Did something happen between you and Touko-chan?"
Yumi sensed that if she started explaining, tears would flow so she cut to the chase

"She declined my rosario..."

"I see"

"Why? I didn't say it because I felt sorry for her"

I knew at that point that Touko-chan was to be my petit soeur. Why? Which part of Touko-chan caught my attention. I can't explain. But it was certain. If I were to say it the way Shimako-san would, it would be "it's was just because."
It was just because, I really yearned for Touko-chan at that moment.
But my feelings did not reach her.

Sachiko-sama: "Touko-chan is not the only first year student"
Yumi: "But.."
Sachiko-sama: "[Let me finish] But, if you think that way, you wouldn't have offered your rosario to her"

That's exactly right. Now that I know that Touko-chan is the one for me, I cannot think of anyone else but her as my soeur.

Sachiko-sama: "Then don't give up. When Shimako declined I didn't give that much thought. But when you did, it was different. I became aggressive and vowed strongly to myself that Yumi will become my petit soeur. I did everything that I can...and see? You are right beside me right now."

Yumi recalls how Sachiko-sama went to tooth and nail.

Sachiko-sama: "So what if she declined on your first try."
Yumi: "Yes"
Sachiko-sama: "Stay high. Being declined is nothing to be ashamed of"
Yumi: "Yes!"

Sachiko-sama: "But it does hurt doesn't it?"
Yumi: "Yes. Umm....I'm sorry, but may I cry right now?"

Sachiko spread her arms and brought Yumi into her

Yumi cries deeply in Sachiko-sama's arms.

Plot Summary
Miki was a fan of a thrid-year student who was nicknamed "Saako-sama." One day, Miki finds her idol sleeping like a fairy in the greenhouse. Saako-sama suddenly wakes up - realizing that she had dozed off in the warm sunlight, she asks Miki the time and heads off to her next class.

However, while Saako-sama left as elegantly as always, she seemed to be in such a hurry that she left behind her book. The book was titled "Makura no Soushi" and it was a book that was borrowed from the Lillian Student Library.

Miki faithfully returned the book to Saako-sama. However, Miki wanted to read that book as well - so she checked the library frequently to see if Saako-sama had returned the book back. One day, the book was returned at the library, so Miki subsequently borrowed it. However, the end of the school year was looming.

Miki's peers were in a mood where they were getting autographs from their elders whom they've idolized. Miki's friend, Yasumi-san was no exception as she received an autograph from Rosa Foetida.

Perhaps Miki was not clearly thinking straight that day. As she was going to the school library to get an extension on her "Makura no Soushi" that she borrowed. There, she once again met Saako-sama. Whatever was going on inside Miki's mind that day, she asked for Saako-sama's autograph - in the inner cover of the "Makura no Soushi" that she borrowed.

Only when Miki returned home did she realize what she had done - she had ruined school property. Feeling guilty on what she had done, she decided to go and buy a new "Makura no Soushi" and gave that back to the library. And quoting from the story:

Hence "Makura no Soushi" once again returned to its classical series. However, the book that Miki bought was of a newer edition so within the purple front covers of the series, one stood out as with the newer, pink front cover.

As Miki came to this row of library books each time, her heart churns on what she had done. However, she vowed to never forget her mishap, so she would frequently come and visit this row of books.

The one book with the different front cover.

Perhaps this hurt-feeling is something that I must carry on for the rest of my life. Even if I graduate - and even if I get married and have my own children...

"Hmm?" said Shimako-san. As Yumi and Yoshino gathered, Shimako-san pointed out one section of the row of books in the school library - "this one book has a different front cover than the other series."

The book they found with the different pink cover among the purples was titled "Makura no Soushi."

" 'Makura no Soushi'...Hmm"
"What is it Yumi-san?"
"I don't know, I just remembered something"
"What did you just remember?" asked Shimako-san.
"Yes. We have this same book at my house."
"This?" asked Yoshino-san with the book she just borrowed in her hands.

"No. The 'Makura no Soushi' one. It was buried deep within my home's closet"
"In the closet? Not in the bookcase?"
"Yes. I just thought that my mom didn't like classics so I didn't give it much thought at the time."
"Well, if she hates classics, I don't think she would keep it. Besides, how did you know that it was your mom's?"

Sherlock Yoshino begins to go through investigation mode.

"Good question...I wonder why I came with that conclusion...Oh wait, now I remember. It was personalized. It read 'To Houribe Miki-san.' Houribe was my mother's maiden name."

"Ah, so Yumi-san's mother's name is Miki. Then I take that your father's name is something like Yuuichi or Yuuta?"

"...." Close. It is Yuuichiro.

"If it was personalized 'To Houribe Miki-san,' then it must've been a present."
"Oh yes, now I'm starting to remember a little bit more. It had another name on it. Ehh...what was it....Kiku-something Sayako. Wait, normally that kanji is more used as Kiyoko in that sense."

Once after Yumi had met Ogasawara Sayako-sama, Yumi began to read the kanji
「清」 as "Saya" all the time (that kanji can be both read as "Saya," "Sei" and/or "Kiyo")

"Yumi-san, your mother was a former student of Lillian wasn't she not? Maybe that book at your house's closet used to be here." said Yoshino-san jokingly.

"Oh, come now" laughed Yumi. But perhaps, that idea may not be as too farfetched thought Yumi to herself.

Silent Night's Apparition (Dec 2004)
『マリア様がみてる 静かなる夜のまぼろし』200412月号)

If you notice from the title, "Shizukanaru~" (Quiet) is also a pun on the main character of this story - Kanina Shizuka-sama. Hence, while it can be read "The Illusion in the Quiet Night," it can also be pun-read as "The Illusion in Shizuka's Night."

"Shikanaru Yoru no Maboroshi" is based (somewhat) upon Hans Christian Anderson's "Little Match Girl", which Kanina Shizuka-sama herself even mentions. There is this fairy tale of western origin about a little girl who sells matches in the winter. No one buys her matches, and she gets cold. In despair, she lights up those matches, and in the flame she sees visions (illusions). In the end, she sees an illusion where she is sleeping warmily on the lap of her deceased grandmother. Story ends with her dying in the freezing winter, but with a warm smile on her face.

It is Christmas. Shizuka is walking in a department store with nothing to do. She is stopped by a fortune teller who reads her palm and tells her "you will have a great turn of events when in the new year."

Shizuka, left pondering, returns home. A note was left on the table from her mom which read "Going out for a few moments to get the Christmas cake I reserved."

Bored with nothing to do, Shizuka sat down on the sofa. Then, she noticed a lump inside her pocket. "Six books of matches for 100 yen..." Pondering why she bought that, she remembered it was because of the fairy tale (see above) she had recently just re-read from the recommendation of the Lillian school library. When she re-read this story, she realized that it wasn't so tragic that she had remembered it from when she was a child. While the adults see the young girl frozen to death and feel sorry for her, at least the young girl passed away happily and warm on the illusion of her deceased grandmother's lap.

Just for the heck of it, Shizuka lit up a match. Nothing happens. "Perhaps I shouldn't have eaten that Chocolate bon-bon. The young girl who saw it was hungry..."

Shizuka lits one once again. This time she sees two happy soeurs walking side-by-side and hand-in-hand. There is no conversation between them, but their bond is shown with the black ribbon that the younger soeur wears to bind her hair into two parts. (Obviously, Shizuka is seeing Sachiko-sama and Yumi).

Shizuka ponders why she just saw that. There was no jealousy there, nor was there any feeling that she wanted a soeur relation like that. Shizuka snugged it off as "I probably saw that because I though that scene was beautiful."

Shizuka lits the match once again. This time, she sees a vision of a frail-looking but strong-eyed first-year student waiting for someone in front of the St. Mary Statue. When the person arrived, the first year student suddenly said "please let me become your petite soeur [once again]." (Obivously, Shizuka is seeing Rei-sama and Yoshino)

Shizuka wasn't there when that happened. She probably read it on the Lillian School Newspaper whose editor-in-chief has an articulate sense of reporting which makes the readers believe that they actually witnessed that in a grand scale. Of course, "Yellow Rose Revolution," and its climax sent shockwaves across the Lillian campus - which of course includes Shizuka-sama.

Shizuka lits the match again. She sees the illusion of a young first year student whose features is portrayed by her melancholic beauty. (Obviously, Shizuka saw Shimako) Shizuka immediately blows out the flame.

"Why did I just see that? What do I wish to see?" Questions encircle within Shizuka.

As Shizuka falls into despair, crying out for some plea to help her, she suddenly has a relapse into the past when she was a first year student.

"Oh how I wish we had someone like Shizuka-chan in the Yamayurikai" said the previous Rosa Chinensis (Super Rosa Chinensis, Youko's grande soeur)

"Oh? You already have a nice petite soeur - Youko-chan." said the head of the chorus.

"No, what I mean was we need a first year student in our Yamayurikai who is strong-willed just like Shizuka-chan." replied [Super] Rosa Chinensis.

"Oh really? But you can't have her...you don't know when Shizuka will suddenly go off to Italy. She has been denying petite soeur request ever since she joined our chorus group." said the chorus leader.

"Are you sure? Maybe she's just making an excuse because she already has a person in mind who she wishes to be her grande soeur?" said [Super] Rosa Chinensis

"Uh...I never said that I have anyone in mind." countered Shizuka

"Oh really? Well that's not so interesting. Well, how about you take our little white one?" smiled [Super] Rosa Chinensis.

Shizuka jittered slightly.

"You mean Sei-chan? I don't think that possible." questioned the chorus leader.

"That meaning, you're talking about Shiori-san, are you not?" said the [Super] Rosa Chinensis.

Shizuka awakens to her present state

Why. Even that Shiori-san wasn't able to become that person's petite soeur. I believed that that person would never have her own soeur. But now, there is a young first year student beside her. As Shizuka began to cry, with a feeling inside her that this wasn't the way it was supposed to be - that this wasn't the reason why she postponed her sponsorship to Italy.

Shizuka lit the match once again. She clearly saw the vision of the person she had wanted to see.

"Rosa Gigantea...Satou Sei-sama"
"Gokigenyou"
"I....I have always loved you"
"Oh really, thank you."
match goes off

Shizuka lights the match once again
"Sei-sama, I have always adored you"
"Oh really, thank you."
match goes off

"Sei-sama!"
and Shizuka lights the match once again
"I really do love you!!"
"Oh really, thank you."
match goes off

Everytime Shizuka opens her heart to tell Sei's illusion, each and everytime, Sei answers "Oh really, thank you." The more and more Shizuka lights the match, the answer is always the same....

And Shizuka realized why Sei's illusion replies back with the same answer. Even though Shizuka tells what she feels deep inside her heart, she is just telling her true feelings toward an illusion - that in which is not a reality which can never go foward that "oh really, thank you."

"Wait! Sei-sama!"
match goes off, lights match

"Come on, Shizuka, follow me"
match goes off, lights match

"Please don't leave me behind! Sei-sama, save me from this spiral!"
match goes off, lights match

"You already know what to do"
match goes off, lights match

"I don't know!"
match goes off, lights match

"Shizuka, what do you desire?"
match goes off, lights match

"You already have the answer in you."
match goes off, lights match

.....

Just then, as Shizuka's mom said "I'm home~" Shizuka awoke from her trance.

Shizuka's mom looks at the pile of burnt matches in the ash tray "What the...were you trying to enact the story of the young girl and her matches?"

Shizuka: "How did you guess?"

Shizuka's mom: "Well you wouldn't ruin your own throat, would you?" (I don't suspect that you were smoking because you are the lead in the chorus)

Shizuka: "That's true"

Shizuka's mom: "So did you see any illusions?"

Shizuka: "I might've, I might not have..."

Shizuka mom: "Hey, cut that smirk off your face....what are you deviously planning this time?"

Shizuka: "What are you talking about?"

Shizuka mom: "I know you. You always get that smirk when you are wily. You've been always the type who gets back at something that has been done to you."

Shizuka: "Sheesh mom, I'm not that big of a troublemaker..."

But, what Shizuka had realized and started planning to do is of such a scale. It will probably cause some turmoil. Perhaps the fortune teller was right...something big will happen when the new year comes along.

"Perhaps, I should start by cutting off my hair."

(Obviously, this story is a precursor to Shizuka's sudden candidacy to run for the Yamayurikai)
