Everyone remembers original Star Trek! Where the women were eye candy and eventually, "report to Kirk's bridge," if you know what I mean. The women of Classic Trek were not that great. Not even Uhurah had a major part in an episode. That concept had changed by the time The Next Generation came around. Still, the women wore tight uniforms ( so did the men, wink, wink!). In "Encounter at Farpoint," women still wore the go go boots with the super-short skirts...... but so did the men! I am not lying! Look at the extras in that episode! There ARE men wearing the women's clothing! Anyway, the women of TNG were stronger and played a greater role to the show than the women of classic Trek.
Deep Space Nine rolled around a few years after TNG. The women were EVEN better! Kira Nerys was a feisty Bajoran who could kick some serious ass! Jadzia Dax was beautiful, but she knew how to use those nasty but efficient Klingon weapons! I love the women of DS9. Jadzia will always be my favorite female character in all of Trek.
This is where progress with female characters came spiraling down........
Voyager came out not too long after DS9. Finally, a show had a female as the captain! That was the ONLY progress Voyager made. A few years after Voyager's premiere, Kes was taken off and replaced with "Psycho Barbie." That's my nickname for her. Seven of Nine joined the show's cast, making other things rise than the ratings. Of course, the producers said that she was a good character that who wasn't intended as a sex symbol. Bull shit! If 7 of 9 is such a wonderful character and has much more meaning than eye-candy, take her out of that skin-tight uniform and put her in one that is not so........"enhancing." The uniform that she wears now looks like she was either poured into it or she had it painted on!
Now, I have the feeling that you, the reader/internet surfer, have the impression that I am jealous of Jeri Ryan. HA! Why should I be jealous???? I am 6'1" tall with long blonde hair and blue eyes. There is nothing about Jeri Ryan that I could be jealous of. And I don't hate Ms. Ryan either. I just don't like the 7 of 9 character. 7 of 9 is one of the reasons on why I think Voyager lost the momentum it had for potential.(That is another topic, chack it out!)
In conclusion, Seven is the worst female character in the Star Trek universe. The other woman I didn't like was Kamala, the metamorphic mate (TNG "The Perfect Mate"). You can tell that TNG episode was written for men! |
