EMERGENCY
26Th June,1975

Background    |    After Effcts    |    Law And Order    |    Resurgence    |    The Resolve    |

Emergency was a historical necessity. When historians look back at India's post independence past, they will perhaps see in Indira Gandhi a bold leader much maligned by her opponents.    -P.D.Tondon

BACKGROUND
Those days it was rumoured that some leaders who were against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had got in touch with some military leaders and police officers.Their plan was to overthrow her government. They were directly and indirectly instigating the military and police to revolt against Mrs Gandhi.Somehow, she got wind of it.she tried to settle differencees on the negotiating table but they seemed to be determined to throw her government.

One day historians will settle down to write the history of India after independence. Then many startling things will come to light including the facts about the 1975 Emergency and how viciously a very bold woman was maligned by her opponents.

AFTER EFFECTS
The atomsphere in the country had radically changed within a week or so after the emergency was enforced. However its news disturbed many of the supporters of democracy when they first heard it.
The changed conditions in the country greatly pleased the common man.Trains ran punctually. The railway employees regularly came to clean bathrooms in running trains. The railway ticket collectors nearly stopped extracting money from passengers. When one TC took some money and was cought,he cried, returned themoney and asked for pardon.

LAW AND ORDER
Students who would go on strike on the slightest of pretext gave up this passtime. Government employees came to office on time and were seen loitering about.Bussinessmen dreaded arrest,if found black marketing.
There seemed to be law and order in the country and not the chaotic conditions of today. People strongly feel that if the country is to be governed effectively and the nation is to make good progress, it has to be ruled with an iron hand to save the people from going astray and damaging the national interests.
One can call such a measure by any name one pleases, but the disciplining process must begin. It is pity that many people do their duty in India only due to fear and not with sprit of patriotism.

RESURGENCE
The Prime Minister who imposed the emergency was called a 'tyrant'.However. when the people -after discarding her as the leader of the nation in 1977-realised that the
Emergancy was a correct step in those chaotic conditions, they elected her as overwhelming majority in 1980. This deeply shocked and surprized her opponents. She was damned as a tyrant, but proved to be a deliverer.

THE RESOLVE
So many good things were done during that period. It was a case of undeserved political murder of a very brave leader in 1977 and an undeserved importance to an average High Court Judgement.
Destiny had directed it all and it happened. destiny shapes our ends and the same destiny ends our shapes.
Whether the imposition of the emergency in 1975 was justified or not is for historians to decide.
