The Manak house-
The cultural monument

The Manak house was in Savamalska street  at the begining of fourth decade of the 19th  century.

The building is named for Manak MIhailovic, a tzintzar emigrant from Macedonia, who  bought the house in the 1870s.
It is situated  on the regulation traffic line of the old road that once  conected City Gate
( Varos Kapija) and Savamala.

The location on which is house built caused irregular form.
The house includes  basement which is built in stone, ground floor and storey -all designed in special strucural system.

At the ground floor were  bakehouse and tavern. The storey was reserved for his owner and his residential rooms.

This kind of arrangement of innerspace
and caracteristical  oriels indicate on  typical housestye of  balkanian architectural tradition.

There are many legends and anecdotes linked with the old house of Belgrade.
By one anecdote , this house was built for turkish " Aga" and his multitudinous harem. He left Belgrade becouse of upcoming new age in Serbia.
Then, there is an  indication that the house was post office of Duke Milos ( Knez Milos).

There is a hypothesis, as well, that the house was a place for pleasure and fun , sort of Variete club in which women were playing and singing.

The Manak house became a museum after a period of conservation and restauration during  1964- 1968.  year.
Then the
College for protection of cultural monuments of Belgrade
(
Zavod za zastitu spomenika kulture Beograd) had  decided to set an permanent exibition and the Collection of Hristifor Crnilovic.

Legacy was dedicated to
Ethnographic Museum in Begrade to look after.
This Museum organizes  many other  events from fields of culture in the Manak house as well.
