MARK III   SEMI-AUTOMATIC
This is my ongoing pet project which I began brainstorming in 1996 and started constructing in 2002.  It is little more than an adaptation of the gas-operated rifle action found on most modern assault rifles such as the AK series.  The heart of the system is the use of uniform, preloaded shells.  Many people around the country have started to experiment with shell-type ammo, and I think that it will eventually catch on just as brass rifle cartridges did over a century ago.

A brilliant fellow named Lee Cross designed a strikingly similar gun in 1998, but I don't know if it has ever been built.  Although I have problems with a few of his design aspects, some parts of it are excellent and I intend to incorporate them into my gun.  Unfortunately, I didn't find his drawings after I began construction, so I have had to rebuild several key components.
UPDATE - JULY 22
This is the point I will be at as soon as I get a new rifled barrel.  The frame and magazine are completed, and with a full-length barrel, I can add the combustion chamber and begin tuning the gas system.  With the exception of the barrell and extractor claw, all parts shown in the above diagram have been fabricated.
The light grey pipe is 1.5" and the dark grey is 2" SCHD 80.  All gaps will be sealed with o-rings.
Pretty self-explanatory.

1. A new shell drops into the receiver.
2. The bolt moves foreward and seals the shell in the breach.
The gun fires.
3. The bolt retracts, and the blue extractor claw flips out the empty shell.
The cycle starts over again.

At this point, I am uncertain as to what propellant I will ultimately run the gun on.  Initially, it will be a combustion gun burning propane and oxygen, but I'd eventually like to convert it to a high pressure CO
2 system.  More info to come as this project nears completion.
