LITERARY ANALYSIS DESCRIPTION

You are required to read one of the books from the following list. Books are on reserve at the library or for sale at the SSU Book Store. You can also order them from any bookstore.

You have been assigned to a group and the other members of your group are also reading the same book. You should keep in touch with them using e-mail to share your reactions to the book.

You should read the entire book to write a critical analysis of the it. This paper is due in class on May 12 for Section A and May 14 for Section B.

Assessment criteria for determining your grade is below.

Read the book assigned to your group and write a 4 - 5 page (double-spaced) critical review of it. In your thesis statement, consider how the book relates to the Starpower Game and Theory of Social Stratification. Keep in touch with your group members through E-mail to share your thoughts and perspectives and drafts of your paper as you develop it. This paper is due in class on May 12 for Section A and May 14 for Section B. Your paper will be graded according to the assessment criteria which follows.

A Level Papers (90 - 100 points)

  • Well structured (50 points total)

    Introduction: Thesis statement with title, author, and your main idea about the subject of your paper. (10 points)

    Development: Logically organized presentation of proof for thesis; references to incidents (using the plot selectively), quotes, discussion of ideas, etc. (30 points)

    Conclusion: Sums up satisfactorily, repeats, and restates the ideas of the introduction. (10 points)

  • Fulfills the assignment, i.e., includes reference to how book relates to the Starpower Game and Theory of Social Stratification (10)
  • Shows excellent insight into the literature (10 points)
  • Clear, easily understood; interesting to read (10 points)
  • Few, if any, mechanical errors (10 points)
  • Makes an excellent appearance; typed, double-spaced (10 points)

TO B LEVEL PAPER

B Level Papers (80 - 89 points)
  • Thinner version of an A paper
  • Structure good, but development is weaker than in an A paper (fewer examples, quotes, etc.)
  • Insight into literature is less keen
  • Mechanical errors more serious (four or five)� � �
  • Makes a good appearance; typed, double-spaced

TO C LEVEL PAPER

C Level Papers (70 - 79 points)
  • Will have thesis statement and recognizable structure, but development may be slight� � � �
  • Will deal with theme but may be heavy on plot� � � �
  • Follows assignment, at least partially� � � �
  • May show only surface understanding of the literature or even some confusion about it� � �
  • May have several mechanical errors, especially spelling� � � �
  • Appearance is fair

D Level Papers (60 - 69 points)
  • Structure weak, probably lacking thesis� � � �
