It really is surprising what I found in my old cabinet.
When I stripped it's old electronics I carefully kept
everything. I'm really glad that I did now. Inside the
cabinet rather sat a small black box. I took it in to
work today to my workshops resident electrician / tech-head.
We bravely pumped 240volts into this little black box and...
voila!
It turns out to be a voltage reducer and
rectifier in full working order!
What does that mean......?
Well in a nutshell it allows you to pump 240volts AC
(Alternating current) and it out puts 12volts and 5volts DC
(Direct Current) - DC is a lot more stable for supplying power
to certain electronic components.
I'm going to use it to power the lamps on my coin mech and the
audio amplifier for the speakers as well.
As you can see from the photograph below
(click it to enlarge) the power supply can generate different
voltages and even different amp outputs. This means that
I am able to hook up my coin mech lights straight from the 5v
supply. Therefore I don't have to hack into a power
supply from a PC power supply unit.
The 12v supply is going to be used to power the audio
amplifier.
