| PROGRESS? |

| Man Versus Land In the land of the tall pine trees Where once braves and warriors took stand Still wages a war of a different beat, A war between men and the land. Battlefields once lush and green Now bare and defenseless they lay Stripped of their yield and barren To the ravages of man, fallen prey. Furnaces are fired and houses built From the fruits of the mountains, they say And jobs are born for your families For progress we have to make way. Perhaps someday, if conservation means Can return green by their plan We will once again see the pine trees win Otherwise, the real loser is man. -Doris Jones Cowan |
