HOMETOWN
Appalachia

I was born in a once-rich mining town
Where prosperous businesses once did abound
Where streets were alive with healthy trade
And comfortable livings were being made
Coal was king and the town did flourish
Who could foresee that the "boom" would soon perish?

The raging demand for coal has abated
The needs it fulfilled now are outdated
Silence settled on the once thriving town
Many empty buildings soon could be found
But survivors remain in this little place
And life goes on, though slower the pace.

There are those who forget us who remain
Amid the silence of mines and the slowing of train
But out of the ashes, we still persevere
Spirit and pride still in full gear
We may be fewer, but we are not dead
Our heart  is still beating, our blood still red.

Determination is found in abundant supply
In this, my hometown, whose strength still does lie
In the people who believe there is a way
To revive and renew, and strive for the day
When again we will be quite alive and growing
Our place in the sun will be healthy and glowing.

For amazing beauty surrounds in these hills
Not the man-made sprawling with the big city frills
But strong and serene, my little hometown
Exceedingly rich is the good life that's found
It shouldn't be judged by it's bad publicity
But rather the charm of it's quaint simplicity!
