Deluxe French Fries

The second post office to bear the “Fairville” name which originated from one Robert Fair an early Main Street store owner when it was still known as Mahogony Road. This solid, Romanesque style building was built not far from the railway station as was customary at the time. It is similar to hundreds built early in the 20th century across Canada, and, like many, has been converted to serve in new ways. It survived a devastating community fire in May of 1922 but was replaced by a functional, single level post office on Church Avenue in 1969.

These are two pictures of the same building. The post office on the left is decorated to celebrate the Jubilee of Confederation on July 1, 1927. The building is now the location of a Deluxe French Fries restaurant. The picture on the right was taken on March 25, 1998. It is a prime example of the diverse building architectures of Saint John

This is a family oriented restaurant and is a family owned business, there are five other locations in Saint John. There are several locations in Moncton N.B. as well as two in Fredericton, one in Amhurst N.S. and one in Truro N.S. The business was started by Laurier Theriault in Moncton N.B. He sold fresh cut french fries in paper bags out of a truck in 1949. They have been in business for 56 years and the above location was opened in 1970. I have been with the company for 35 years and have worked in many locations as well as the one above, and very proud to say so. They have always treated me good. One time when one of my boys was 14 he had to be taken on an emergency helicopter flight to the Isaac Walton Hospital in Halifax Nova Scotia. This was in the morning, I had to call work to say I could not come in and needed my pay in cash as it was pay day so had ask my boss to give the cash to my husband, as he could not cash my check. It wasn't even 15 minutes and he was there with cash in hand plus extra and told me not to worry and take all the time I needed. I was able to go back and forth at will and work in between until my young fellow was well. This I will always remember and be thankful for as it was a very trying time.

Over the years I have worked with many people and met many people it has sure made life interesting to say the least. I will retire in about 21/2 or 3 years I will surely miss the people I have worked with  and met over the years. These are some of the co-workers I share my days with
