• Job Description:
EDITOR:Edit/produce command newspapers and/or magazines. I held the
position of editor for the Crescent City and Continental Marines magazines,
and for the Okinawa Marine, and The Globe, Marine Corps newspapers. Duties
included writing news and features, photography and developing black and white
negatives and prints, copy editing, design and lay
out.
RADIO/TELEVISION CHIEF:Planned and produced high impact news and
features for Armed Forces Radio and Television Service, Navy/Marine Corps
News, and Carolina Marines, including interviewing, filming, script writing
and editing.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS:Respond to queries from the civilian
media; perform media liaison functions during operations/exercises; conduct
community relations programs. As the community relations chief planned Marine
Corps Base events open to the public. Planned and coordinated activities and
units participating in numerous Friendship Days sponsored by military
communities in Japan and the United States. Headed the planning and
coordination between U.S. military units, the Japanese Self Defense Force and
foreign officials. Advertised local community events throughout military and
civilians publications and broadcast avenues. Also managed negative high
profile issues, such as night landing practices, aircraft mishaps and
misconduct of Marines.
JOURNALIST:Gather news and feature materials for
publication in command newspapers and magazines and for radio and television
programs for internal and external release. Wrote articles on cultural
exchanges, customs, holidays and community service projects both in Asia and
the United States. Traveled extensively throughout Thailand, Korea, Japan,
Philippines, Cambodia, Honduras, Antigua, and the United States to provide
media coverage of Marine Corps exercises and combined training exercises
involving foreign military personnel and leisure stories.
PUBLIC
AFFAIRS CHIEF:Supervised, trained and coordinated the activities of all
enlisted Marines assigned to the Public Affairs Office, advisor to the public
affairs officer in all matters pertaining to public affairs to include, but
not limited to, internal and external information programs, publishing a
command newspaper/magazine, and managing community relations
programs.

Education and Training:
BASIC JOURNALISM: The principles, techniques and skills required in
public information, service information and community relations. Practical
experience in print journalism, interviewing techniques, news and feature
writing, editing, newspaper layout and makeup; photojournalism; radio and
television writing; speech; international relations and
government.
ELECTRONIC JOURNALISM COURSE:Emphasized the principles and
techniques needed to produce television news and feature assignments. Learned
writing techniques for EJ, voice-over and stand-up reporting, EJ news coverage
decisions in the sphere of military activities, operation of television
camera/recorder systems, lighting, site survey procedures and video tape
editing.
ADVANCED PUBLIC AFFAIRS SUPERVISOR COURSE:Duties required of
the Senior NCO in managing an office environment of the Public Affairs
Department. Training in computer literacy, PA office resource management,
office procedures, conducting media training, PA involvement and reaction to
environmental concerns and hazardous materials, response to terrorist
incidents, managing community relations, civilian employee
relations.
INTERMEDIATE PHOTOJOURNALISM: Practice basic camera
techniques, basic and advanced black-and-white darkroom procedures, slide
processing, photo editing and layout, and basic audio visual slide show
production.
EDITORS COURSE: Subject areas covered photojournalism,
print journalism and public affairs. Practical experience in all phases of
newspaper production, communications law, Department of Defense policy on
release of information, news gathering, writing, editing, style, deadlines,
